Lesson Outcomes;
1. Develop own food web from immediate ecosystem and demonstrate the flow of energy.
2. Interpret the efficiency of energy transfer across successful trophic levels
Task:
1. Organisms of different species can interact in many ways. With examples
from the following photographs (next slide) identify/describe at least 3 ways in
which living organisms in the environment can relate to each other.
2. What is the source of energy for the organisms in the ecosystem?
3. How does the energy flow across the different levels of organisms?
Modes of nutrition?

Modes of feeding?
Check list;

Autotrophs (or producers) make their own food using light or chemical energy.
Examples;

Heterotrophs (or consumers) get organic molecules by eating other organisms or their by-
products.
Examples;

Food chain - A series of organisms in which energy is transferred from one level to another
Food web - A network of feeding interactions, usually consisting of multiple food chains
Trophic level (Feeding level) - Each step in a food chain or food web
From the clip;

ii. Using a possible food chain, describe the flow
of energy in the ecosystem.
(b)(b) i. Name two biotic interactions witnessed in
the clip.
ii. How are the organisms in any of the interactions
identified adapted to survive in the
ecosystem?
a) Identify the relationship represented.

b) Isolate and write down 3 food chains.

c) From the illustration identify the secondary

consumers

d) Show the consequence of prolonged drought on

the population of snakes.

2. State what arrows in the model represent. (1 mark).

3. Humans built a large housing development in the forest which is the habitat of the foxes. The foxes now
use human trash as a source of food.
Outline how the population of foxes could be affected by this change. (2 marks)
Describe how the deer population would then be affected. (3 marks)
Explain how the oak tree and rabbit populations might change if the squirrel population
decreases. (5 marks)

Describe how the rabbit population might change if the squirrel population decreases. (3
marks)

With examples from the above model, explain the following types of natural interactions.
