NATURE OF SACRED LITURGY
• TheMass is referred to as The Sacred
Liturgy. The Mass allows us to
participate in the Paschal Mystery of
Christ's Passion, Death, Resurrection,
and Ascension, for Christ is present
in Liturgy. Christ's love flows to us in
a special way from the Eucharist and
The Word of God.
PURPOSE OF SACRED LITURGY

• In secular terms, the purpose of


liturgy is to quicken the mind,
energise the body, awaken the
soul. So may the entire being be
braced to action at once heroic
and redemptive.
Importance of SACRED LITURGY
• As a religious phenomenon, liturgy
represents a communal response to and
participation in the sacred through
activities reflecting praise, thanksgiving,
remembrance, supplication or repentance.
It forms a basis for establishing a
relationship with a divine agency, as well
as with other participants in the liturgy.
CHARACTERISTICS OF SACRED
LITURGY
• Public prayer. Always for the entire church.

THE CHURCH AS A
SACRAMENT
• As a Sacrament the Church is both a
sign and an instrument which
expresses and describes spiritual
reality.
• Being an instrument, the Sacrament
effects what it signifies, meaning, a
sacrament fulfills or causes to happen
what it symbolizes.
SACRAMENTS
• A SENSIBLE SIGN
• A SAVING SYMBOLIC ACT OR A VISIBLE SIGN,
ARISING FROM THE MINISTRY OF CHRIST
AND CONTINUED IN, BY AND FOR THE
CHURCH THROUGH THE POWER OF THE HOLY
SPIRIT.
“Instituted by Christ”
• He is the ORIGINATOR of the Seven sacraments.
• He is the PRIMARY AGENT(Christ Himself
baptize,confirms etc.)

saving act in the seven ritual sacraments.
EFFECT OF THE SACRAMENTS
Is to draw us closer to the Church, to Christ himself in
the spirit and the Father.

SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
• Baptism makes us members of God’s
family. Each baptized individual
becomes an adopted child of
Heavenly Father and is given the
gifts of the Holy Spirit to accomplish
his threefold mission of being a
priest, prophet, and king.
SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
• ACTS 2:37-38(Pentecost day address by St.
Peter)
• The apostles offered BAPTISM to those who
believed in Jesus; to the Jews and the Gentiles.
• BAPTISM-Greek word “baptizein which
means
to “PLUNGE” into water and symbolized
that we are buried in Christ”.

FORMULA/WORDS:

• “I Baptize you in the


name of the Father, and
of the Son
• And of the Holy Spirit”.
MATTER AND FORM
• Natural water that is poured or sprinkled
on a person, or in which a person is
immersed, is the matter or material
element necessary for baptism.
• The pronouncing of the words is the form
of baptism, namely: "I baptize you in the
name of the Father, and of the Son, and of
the Holy Spirit.
EFFECTS OF BAPTISM
• 1. SINS FORGIVEN
• By Baptism all sins are forgiven,
Original Sin and all personal sins,
and temporal punishment due to
sin is removed. After one has been
reborn in Christ, there is nothing
to prevent one’s entry into God’s
Kingdom.
.2.ADOPTED CHILDREN OF GOD

• Baptism also gives us new life as


adopted children of God. We become
sharers of divine life and temples of
the Holy Spirit. We are now made
righteous by God and live in a state of
grace, that is, we live in union with
God because of his gracious and
loving initiative.
3. INITIATED INTO THE CHURCH
• By Baptism we become members of the
Church, the Body of Christ. We share in
the priesthood of Christ as well as his
prophetic and royal mission. We enjoy the
community we find in the Church, share
our talents and gifts with its members,
respond willingly to its teachings and
requirements, and assume the
responsibilities that our membership
4. BONDED TO OTHER CHRISTIANS

• Baptism provides a common foundation


among all Christians, including those not
yet in full communion with the Catholic
Church. The Church recognizes the
validity of Baptism in other Christian
Churches as long as the rite involved the
pouring of or immersion in water, a
Trinitarian formula, and the intention to
baptize.
5. BAPTISMAL CHARACTER

• “Incorporated into Christ by Baptism,


the person baptized is configured to
Christ. Baptism seals the Christian
with the indelible spiritual mark
(character) of his belonging to Christ.
No sin can erase this mark, even if sin
prevents Baptism from bearing the
fruits of salvation.
MINISTER or CELEBRANT
• MINISTER
• The minister of solemn baptism is first
the bishop and seconds the priest. By
delegation, a deacon may confer the
sacrament solemnly as an extraordinary
minister.
• RECIPIENT
• Every living human being, not yet
baptized, is the subject of this sacrament.
MANNER OF BAPTISM

• Aspersion – is the sprinkling


water on the head
• Ablution – is the pouring water
over the head
• Immersion – is the submerging
of the entire body in water

• THE BAPTISM OF JESUS
• Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist
in the Jordan River to mark the
beginning of His Ministry.
• Catholics also baptized to mark the
beginning of their lives as People of
God.
3.2 Jesus gives us New Life in BAPTISM
• First step to Christian initiation.
• Sacrament of Faith that brings new life in Christ and forgiveness of sins
through water and spirit.
• It incorporates us into the Church and makes us sharers in the Trinitarian divine
life as adopted sons and daughters of the Father.
• It is a significant event in the life of Catholics because without this, we cannot
receive the other sacraments.

• -Denounces what is wrong in the society
• -Calls for conversion or change
• -Reminds the people of God’s covenant “LOVE ONE ANOTHER AS I
LOVED YOU”
