Dubai is one of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

It is located south of the Persian Gulf on the Arabian Peninsula. The Dubai Municipality is sometimes called Dubai state to distinguish it from the emirate. Written accounts document the existence of the city for at least 150 years prior to the formation of the UAE

Some 800 members of the Bani Yas tribe, led by the Maktoum Family, settled at the mouth of the creek in 1833. The creek was a natural harbour and Dubai soon became a center for the fishing, pearling and sea trade. By the turn of the 20th century Dubai was a successful port. The souk (Arabic for market) on the Deira side of the creek was the largest on the coast with 350 shops and a steady throng of visitors and businessmen. By the 1930s Dubai's population was nearly 20,000, a quarter of whom were expatriates. In the 1950s the creek began to silt, a result perhaps of the increasing number of ships that used it. The late Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, decided to have the waterway dredged. It was an ambitious, costly, and visionary project. The move resulted in increased volumes of cargo handling in Dubai. Ultimately it strengthened Dubai's position as a major trading and re-export hub.

The Dubai culture is a cosmopolitan one. With the influx of great number of foreign population which includes, Persians, Indians,Baluchis etc ,the culture in Dubai has become a global one. With Islam as its official religion , Culture in Dubai is essentially a Muslim one but the presence of Hindus, Christians, Sikhs etc cannot be ignored and their presence has left an undeniable mark on the Culture in Dubai.

Islamic is the official and main religion of Dubai with vast majority of Sunni Muslims, though others are also practiced there, being flooded with foreign settlers. Needless to say that learning Islam and respecting while practicing its traditions is important to all the emirates. It is noticeable that for several decades other religious minorities like Hindus, Sikhs, christens and others are living harmoniously in this business center. Unlike many other states, this is the only place where all religions can be worshipped and each person has access to Sikh gurudwara, Hindu temples and churches. The religious communities of Dubai are entitled to their own social and cultural institutions.

Although according to the Constitution of the country the official language in Dubai is Arabic , yet English is widely spoken and different regional languages are also often used.

The men of the Arabian Peninsula wear the immaculate pressed gleaming white (sometimes brown or gray) ankle length robes called dishdasha. Local men wear a small skull cap gafia, covered by the white or sometimes red-checkered head cloth gutra and held in place by the twisted black coil agal. Only rarely will a national appear in western dress within the Emirates. For important occasions and men of standing, the white dishdasha is covered by a flowing black cloak bisht edged with gold braid.

Emirati women usually wear trousers sirwal fitted tightly at the ankles. Over the sirwal is worn the jillabeeya, a floor length dress which is often decorated in embroidery or beautiful beadwork and covered by a black cloak abaya. Some women cover their face with a black cloth nikab that only reveals the eyes and others, mostly older women, wear a canvas mask called a burqa which covers eyebrows, nose and mouth. Almost all women cover their hair with a shaila or hejjab as per the principles of Islam.

Dubai offers a diverse range of cuisine as its population constitutes a heavy mix of foreign visitors and local population. The local cuisine is indeed the best from the Arab world. Savoring the exotic local dishes of Dubai is one thing which is high on the wish-list of its visiting population. These dishes are mainly prepared from fish, meat and rice. Arabic bread which is freshly baked in clay ovens and served with curries is also very popular part of Dubai's rich cuisine. The festive delicacies prepared around the holy months of Ramadan, Eid and social gatherings like weddings have their own charm.

Falafal - mashed peas and sesame seeds rolled into chicken balls & deep fried. Hareis - a rich delicacy of slow-cooked wheat and tender lamb. Matchbous - this dish is made of spiced lamb with rice. Mehalabiya - a pudding sprinkled with rosewater and pistachios. Shawarma - A traditional Middle Eastern snack is the Shawarma . It is made of grilled shavings of lamb or chicken, mixed with salad and rolled inside an Arabic bread . This specialty is sold in many small outlets around the city.

Music and dance in UAE forms a part of the culture and reflects the rich heritage of the country. There are ay lest three types of traditional dance in UAE. Music and dance is common in UAE in most of the festivals and cultural events. People express their joy by dancing even in weddings in UAE. Drums are an integral part of folk music in UAE. Everyone attending a festive occasion is supposed to join the line or circle of swaying dancers, and dance to the accompaniment of tambourines. While young girls dance by swinging their black tresses and swaying their bodies to the strong beat of the music, men re-enact battles fought or successful hunting expeditions.
