Ornaments
UP offers a mix of traditional and
western fashion. The same is reflected in
its jewellery. Be it necklaces, obstacles,
earrings and bangles. This state gives you
a number of options to choose from.
Changing trends in jewellery and Indian
women are interlinked.
Ornaments
• Gold is commonly used by the tribes to make jewellery.
The khasis and jaintias are fond of jewellery, and the
women are specially partial to gold and coral bead
necklaces. A string of thick red coral beads worn by
them during festive occasions is called the paila. The
jewellery of the khasis and jaintias is alike and the
pendant they wear, called kynjri ksiar, is made of 24-
carat gold.
Exquisitely crafted ornaments of gold and silver and gilt
beads form part of Meghalaya’s rich dancing costumes.
The gold beads are not solid but the hollow sphere is
filled with lac. Many of these ornaments as well as the
head gear is decorated with diamond- like crystals of
metal. Amulets, bracelets, necklaces, and anklets are
manufactured locally. The Garo ladies wear a necklace
called the Rigitok which consists of thin fluted stems of
glass strung with fine thread.
Ornaments

• There are around twenty major tribes and

many sub tribes in Arunachal Pradesh,
India, and so it is no wonder that there is a
big variety of tribal jewelries in this region.
Anyway, you can notice some similar
elements: practically in all tribes women
wear numerous necklaces, bangles and
belts. Headbands too are rather common.
Multicolored strings of glass or stone beads
are most favouvered but in southeast
Arunachal Pradesh beads of agate stone,
brass, and silver are also used. Such
necklaces adorn the necks not only of
women but sometimes of men as well.
Every bead has its own value according to
its colour and lustre. Usually they are worn
in numerous quantity.

clothes such as salwar kameez for women
and kurta-pyjama for men. Men also often
sport a head-gear like topi or pagri.

jeans and t-shirts/blouses

the place of residence of the people. Women who belong
to faraway villages of Garo hills wear eking which is a small

either densely populated or crowded places wear long
dresses which are made up of cotton.  The women
belonging to this tribe wear a blouse along with a hand

6 to 10 inches thick with floral patterns adorned on them.

Jainkup which is made up of woolen cloth. Women
belonging to the Khasi tribe also wear accessories with
the dresses which compliment the costume beautifully.
These accessories include ornaments made up of pure
gold or silver. During Ka Shad Suk Mynsiem which is a
festival of the Khasis, female dancers wear a cloth which
is draped right from the waist up till the ankle. This is
worn with a blouse having full sleeves having beautiful

style of clothes in comparison to other tribes. They
use a Kyrshah which is a small piece of cloth
having checks on it to cover their heads post
harvest season. They cover their bodies with a
velvet blouse and an ankle length sarong known as
Thoh Khyrwang. The females of the tribe wear a

headgear. During the festival of Ka Shad Suk
Mynsie, male dancers wear a beautiful turban
made up of silk along with a golden or silver
