INTRODUCTION TO
STATISTICS
Statistics is a form of mathematical analysis that uses
representations and synopses for a given set of experimental
data or real-life studies. Statistics studies methodologies to
gather, review, analyze and draw conclusions from data.
We can represent this conclusions in the form graphs like
bar graphs, histograms and frequency polygons

4
WHAT IS CENTRAL
TENDENCY ?
In statistics, a central tendency (or measure of
central tendency) is a central or typical value for a
probability distribution.
The most common measures of central tendency are
the arithmetic mean, the median, and the mode.

5
DEFINITIONS OF MEAN,MEDIAN AND MODE
MEAN MEDIAN MODE
The mean(or average) of The median is the middle
The mode is the most
observations is the sum of number in a data set. To find
common number in a set. For
the values of all the the median, list your data
example, the mode in this set
observations divided by the points in ascending order and
of numbers is 21:
total number of observations. then find the middle number.
The mean in this set is 30: The middle number in this set
is 28 as there are 4 numbers Set - 21, 21, 21, 23, 24, 26,
below it and 4 numbers 26, 28, 29, 30, 31, 33
Set – 10, 10, 20, 40, 70
above:
Set - 23, 24, 26, 26, 28, 29,
30, 31, 33

LET’S USE STATISTICS
Now using STATISTICS let us do a comparative study
on Rice production between two states of India i.e,
Telangana and Haryana

7
COMPARATIVE STUDY

TELANGANA HARYANA
Rice production from year Rice production from year

Case Study of Rice Production in TS and HR
Now let’s find the mean(average) of this dataset for each
Year Telangana Haryana state.
2014 4.12 4 Telangana : 4.12 +6.81 + 5.49 + 6.02 + 7.35
2015 6.81 4.01 --------------------------------------------

2016 5.49 4.15 : 5.538𝟑
Haryana : 4+ 4.01 + 4.15 + 4.45 + 4.52 + 4.52
2017 6.02 4.45
-------------------------------------------------
2018 7.35 4.52 6
: 4.275
2019 3.44 4.52 Therefore, the average rice production of Telangana is
higher than Haryana.
Tabular Representation of Data(of previous page)

The Median for Telangana and Haryana respectively are

5.755 and 4.30

The Mode for Haryana is 4.52
