Diversity
Organizations are a heterogeneous mix of people in terms of age, gender, race etc.
Managing workforce diversity has become a global concern. Managers have to deal
with individuals and groups belonging to different ethnic cultures. They have to
exercise control and channel behavior in the desired direction

Since its founding Marriott has valued diversity and

1927 inclusion of all associates

Committee for Excellence has promoted the

recruitment, retention, and advancement of women
2003 and minority employees, and initiated efforts to develop
an increasingly diverse owner, guest, and supplier base

the J. W. Marriott Diversity Excellence Award was

2005 created to recognize a business unit or department for
promoting diversity and building an inclusive
environment.
Corporate Diversity
At Marriott, the foundation for diversity and inclusion is
promoting
“UNITY and Family.”

We create an inclusive environment that supports

the recruitment, retention, and advancement of
Unity all employees, and actively engages in efforts to
develop a diverse and inclusive workforce, owner,
guest, and supplier base

Marriott has long standing partnerships with over

Family 30 diversity organizations. We value these
(partners) relationships as their missions align with our
diversity and inclusion efforts.

Recommendations
The hospitality industry, specifically the hotel industry, should focus on creating Diversity,
1-

within organizations that meet with managers in order to create effective change through
company policies.

2-Marriott should focus on intense diversity training for new hires, and not just employees
already working for the company, in order to promote diversity as a priority in the company.

3-Marriott should focus on their employees more than they focus on their guests, rather
than focus on them equally, such as offering mental health days in order to maintain job
satisfaction and reduce stress at work.

4. Marriott should offer more management and executive level opportunities to women
and minorities that have worked in the industry for a long period of
time.
