History of Chinese in the Philippines
The Chinese Mestizos were an important element of
Philippine society in the 19th century. They played a
significant role in the formation of the Filipino middle class,
in the agitation for reforms, in the 1898 revolution, and in the
formation of what is known as the Filipino nationality.

Thus Spaniards faced dilemma: they wanted Chinese for
their indispensable services in the economy and yet were
suspicious and wary of their growing number. This dilemma,
however, was resolved through the policy of converting the
Chinese and encouraging marriages between Catholic
Chinese and Catholic Indios.

In 1594, the Spanish Governor Luiz Perez Damarinas
created Binondo as a permanent settlement for Chinese
mestizos who converted to Catholicism. In this part of
Manila, Chinese merchant and traders were free to do
their business.
Binondo also became the place of intermarriage
between Chinese immigrants and Filipino natives, thus the
emergence of Chinese mestizos.

Binondo
• Once Binondo has been assigned to the
Chinese as a parish, the Dominican quickly
made of it a community of married Catholic
Chinese.

• Clearly, Binondo, by the seventeenth

century was intended to be a settlement for
Catholic Chinese and their mestizo
descendants.

Chinese mestizo communities started to emerge in
many other parts of the Philippines. In Manila, notable
communities were Sta. Cruz and Tondo. In early 17th
century, more than 100 Chinese individuals were married
to native Filipinos in Iloilo, Pampanga and Cebu. In
Northern Luzon, Chinese mestizos could be found in
Pangasinan, Benguet, and Mountain Province.

The Evolution of the Chinese Mestizo
From the time that Chinese mestizos became numerous enough to be classified
separately, the population in the Philippines that were controlled by Spain was
formally divided into four categories:

• Spaniards and Spanish mestizos

• Indios
• Chinese
• Chinese mestizo

The last three were considered tribute-paying classes but the amount of their
tribute payments and the services demanded of them varied

Chinese Mestizos
Any person born of a Chinese father and an Indio mother was considered as
Chinese mestizo. Subsequent descendants were listed as Chinese mestizo. A mestiza
who married a Chinese mestizo, as well as their children, was registered as a mestizo.

But a Chinese mestiza who married an Indio was listed, together with their
children, as an Indio.

Significance of the Chinese Mestizos
• Chinese merchants carried on a rich trade between Manila and the China coast
and distributed the imports from China into the area of Central Luzon, to the
immediate north of Manila.
• Chinese established themselves at or near Spanish settlements, serving them in
various ways: providers of food, as retail traders, and as artisans
• They monopolized internal trading in the Philippines while the Spanish mestizos
were concerned with foreign trade.
• The entrepreneurial power of the Chinese mestizos gave way to the emergence of
the Philippine middle class described as more active and enterprising, more
prudent and pioneering, more oriented to trade and commerce than the Indios

Significance of the Chinese Mestizos

Another significant role that Chinese mestizos played in the Philippine society
was the formation of Filipino identity. During the latter part of 19th century, Chinese
mestizos became more influential in the economy of the Philippines as a Spanish
colony. Spaniards were concerned with the ability of Chinese mestizos to create a
discord in the society.
