TOPIC: CROP GROWING

SUB-TOPIC: COTTON (GOSSYPIUM HIRSUTUM)


 It is a field crop. These are crops grown purposely to sell and get money.
 It is also called an annual cash crops. Other examples include; cotton, sunflower,
sim sim etc.

 Cotton gives us lint which is used to make cloth.

 Cotton seeds give us cooking oil and cotton seed cake which is used to feed
domestic animals like cattle.

 Weeding is done by hand or by hoe.

 Harvesting is done when the bolls split open and release the lint.

 The lint is sold to factories which make cloth while the seeds are sold to oil companies
to extract oil from them.
 It is planted by hand and its planted when the rains start.

 Harvesting is done by hand pulling out the lint from the open bolls.

 After harvesting, cotton is sorted where good quality cotton is separated from the
poor quality.

Cotton pests
1. American boll worm
 The adults are small night flying moths.
 They lay their eggs on the leaves, when the eggs hatch, they eat the flowers and the
young bolls.
 Attacked bolls fall off the plant.

2. Spiny boll worm


 The adults are moths.
 They lay their eggs on leaves.
 The eggs hatch and feed on the bolls and young shoots causing death to the terminal bu

3. Pink ball worm.


 They are larva of small moths.
 They enter the boll and eat the inside parts.
 Damaged bolls fail to open.
4. False codling moth
 They are red on top but yellow down.
 They attack full size bolls eating the inside part.

5. Cotton stainers
 They pierce the bolls with their mouth and introduce a fungus which stains the lint and
also lower the grade of the cotton seed.

6. Aphids
These green, yellow or black insects suck on the young shoots and the young leaves.

7. Seed bugs.
These are small minute bugs which attack opened bolls and suck sap from seeds. The
sucked seeds do not germinate.

8. Red cotton mite.


They are so small and can not be seen with our naked eyes. The leaves become marked
with different yellow shapes, then reddening, withering and falling off.
Diseases that attack cotton
1. Bacterial wilt
It is caused by bacteria and affects leaves, stems and bolls. They turn yellow and dry up.
Young bolls rot and fail to develop.

2. Fusarium wilt
It is a fungal disease. It causes stunting, yellowing of the leaves, dry brown patches on the
leaves and brown staining of the stem.

3. Verticillium
It is caused by a fungi. The terminal buds become stunted, leaves turn yellow and bolls
open early.
SUN FLOWER ( Helianthus annuus)

 Sun flower is an oil crop.


 Its mainly grown in Northern and Eastern parts of Uganda.
 Its an annual crop with an erect stem, tap root and simple leaves.
 After removing oil from the seeds, the residue is used to make cattle feeds.
 Planting is by hand and up to 5 seeds can be planted in a hole because some may not
germinate.
 Harvesting is done when the heads turn brown.
 Sun flower should be kept weed free within the first month.
 Sun flower is sold to oil processors like Mukwano Industries and there is always ready
market for it.

Birds eat the seeds from the heads when they are still in the garden.

 Rust
It is caused by a fungi
The disease attacks leaves destroying them and making them unable to carry out
photosynthesis

 Root and stem rot


The plant wilts. The stems and heads contain black fungus.

 American boll worm


It bores and makes holes into the stem of the plant, the plant later wilts and dies.

 Leaf spot and white blister


They are caused by fungi. They cause brown leaf spots and white leaf blisters.
