unable to express or convey.

FUNCTIONS OF HUMANITIES

a) To make all persons become better human beings

b) To value and appreciate beautiful things
c) To expand our perspective
d) To know the changing image of mankind as its journey across time, across
realities and ideals
AESTHETICS
Some scholars view AESTHETICS as a:
 Theory of beauty
 Discipline that is concerned with the appreciation of beauty
For example:
 In Science, it is defined as the study of sensory or sensory-emotional values which is sometimes understood
as judgement of sentiment and taste.
• In the Social Sciences, it is commonly understood as a critical reflection on art, culture, and nature.
• In the Art Discipline in general, the term aesthetics relates to particular branches of art such as art theory,
literary thery, film, and music theory.
AESTHETICS

o Study of beauty
o “aesthesis” - pertaining to sense of perception
o Our senses – sight, smell, taste, hearing, touch, movement – and the other two – balance and beauty
o Judgment of subjectivity

sensori-emotional values or the sentimentality of a specific work of art wherein

one tries to praise such beauty over the other.
Aesthetics or appreciating beauty is always subjective.

Art has distinct signatures to be considered beautiful.

“The Art Instinct”
Six Universal Signatures in Human Aesthetics
1. Expertise or virtuosity
Humans cultivate, recognize, and
admire technical artistic skills.
2. Non-utilitarian pleasure
People enjoy art for art’s sake, and do not demand to keep
them warm put food on the table.
3. Style
Artistic objects and performances satisfy rules of
composition that place them in a recognizable style.
4. Criticism
People make a point of judging, appreciating and
interpreting works of art.
5. Imitation
With a few important exceptions like abstract painting,
works of art stimulates experiences of the world.
6. “Special” focus
Works of art and artistic performances are frequently
bracketed off from ordinary life, made a special and dramatic
focus of experience.
SUMMARY
 Everyone is involved in the making and consumption of art. Each person's language,
upbringing, experiences, and other factors influence what they find interesting, beautiful, or
mind-opening. The notion that something must be universally admired in order to be good is a
misconception at least and a disruptive distraction at worst. That isn't to suggest that discussing
important issues isn't worthwhile. Our reactions to art reflect who we are and how we see the
world, and expressing these views is one of the most useful tools we have for better
understanding each other and the world we live in.
 Art is related to humanities by broadening our understanding of human cultures and helps us
understand what brings us together and what separates us. The humanities are more concerned
with science and critical study, while the arts are more concerned with the act of creation itself,
whether by performance or the physical processing of works. Also, many artists use some type
of art form to express how they're feeling about the world around them. Whether its music,
painting, poetry or writing, "art" allows an artist an opportunity to depict how they feel. Many
artist are observer and intuitive. They often want to inspire others.
 Art also teaches many important qualities such as listening, observing and responding to multiple
perspectives. Having an appreciation for art also helps us to develop an appreciation for each other
and how we are all unique in our own way.

 Being moved by a painting and purchasing the albums of your favorite music artists, are some ways
of appreciating the art. It is an investment for we are spending a penny to provide medium or
materials in order for us to practice the art.

 Aesthetics is about the nature of beauty. It’s an idea central to any exploration of art. Since we were
young, we were taught to practice our senses – sight, smell, taste, hearing, touch, movement – and the
other two – balance and beauty. All these eight senses are particularly anchoring on the judgment of
subjectivity.
 Subjectivity is often based on the sensori-emotional values or the sentimentality of a specific work of
art wherein one tries to praise such beauty over the other. In reality, we can only praise and criticize
the material things because it is perceptible to the senses, distinct from the immaterial.

 Art is subjective. The person who sees or watches the Art decides whether an art is good or not
depending on his or her discerning taste. In beauty pageants or in any form of competition that is
related to arts, establishing a criteria supports a structured decision-making process, and it becomes
the basis of the judges in determining whether a person or an art is beautiful or not.
