The Floating Egg

Gisell Rios
Problem
Can we make an egg float in water?
Hypothesis
An egg will not float in a cup of
water but if we add materials to the
water that are more dense than the
egg then the egg will begin to float.
Materials
● 4 Tall Drinking Glasses
● Water
● 4 Eggs
● Salt (3 tbsp)
● Chia Seeds (3 tbsp)
● Sesame Seeds (3 tbsp)
Procedure
1. Fill all 4 glasses with equal amounts of water.
2. Add one additional element per glass (Salt,
Chia Seeds, Sesame Seeds) to three of the
glasses.
3. Place one egg into each glass and observe in
each if the egg will float.
Results

1. Egg did not float in glass with just water.

2. Egg floated in glass with salt.

3. Egg did not float in glass with Chia Seeds.

4. Egg did not float in glass with Sesame Seeds.

Conclusion

Hypothesis was correct in glasses where the

additional element made density of water higher than

the density of the egg, the egg floated. In this case

the egg only floated in the glass with salt as it was

the only one with higher density.
