Earth Day : Challenges
&
Solutions
Major issues related to
Environment:
Population growth and environmental quality.
Water pollution.
Air pollution.
Solid waste pollution.
Noise pollution.
Land or soil pollution.
Greenhouse gas emissions.
Forest and Agricultural land Degradation
Resource Depletion
Loss of Biodiversity
Natural Hazards
Poor Agricultural Practices
Global Warming
Acid Rain
Waste Disposal
Waste Disposal: Plastic Disposal
Introduction: (Plastics)
A plastic material is any of a wide range of synthetic
or semi-synthetic organic solids that are moldable.
Plastic is a polymer containing many monomers unit.
It is non-degradable and cheap .
Two industrially important polymeric materials are:
 Elastomers
• PLASTIC POLLUTION is the accumulation of plastic
objects in the earths environment that adversely
effects wildlife, wildlife habitat and humans. Plastics
that act as pollutants are categorized into:
 Micro Plastics
 Meso Plastics
 Macro Plastics
Sources of Plastic
wastes:
PLASTIC POLLUTION:
Effects of Plastic on Land:
Chlorinated Plastic can release
harmful chemicals into the
surrounding soils , which can then
seep into ground water or other
surrounding water sources and also
the ecosystem of the world.
Effects of Plastic on Ocean:
One type of plastic that is of concern in
terms of ocean plastic pollution is
‘NURDLES’.
Nurdles are manufactured plastic pallets
( type of micro plastic) used in the
creation of plastic products and are
often shipped via a cargo ship and
during their shipment many billions of
Nurdles are spilled into oceans every
year.
Toxic chemicals such as BISPHENON A
and POLYSTYRENE can leach into water
Effects of Plastics on
Animals:
Plastic pollution has the potential to
poison animals, which can adversely effect
human food supplies . Some marine
species, such as turtles, have been found
to contain large proportion of plastics in
their stomach. Due to this the animal
typically starves, because the plastic
blocks the animal’s digestive tract.
Sometimes Marine mammals are
entangled into the plastic products such
as nets, which can harm or kill them.
Some of them are consumers of jelly
fish, but often mistake plastic bags
for their natural prey.
Effects of plastic on Birds :
Toxic chemicals called Polychlorinated
biphenyls also become concentrated on
the surface of plastics at sea and are
released after seabirds eat them.
Effects on Humans:
Plastic is carcinogenic to humans.
Promote endocrine disruption.
Biomonitoring chemicals in plastics such
as BPA and phthalates physically affects
the Humans.
Solutions of Plastics pollution:
Say no to single-use plastics.
Switch to reusable shopping bags.
A tote bag is a good substitute to plastic.
Proper recycling.
Awareness campaigns should be conducted.
Social responsibilities, commitment and
ownership by every individual.
Support NSS and NGO’S.
Stop leakage of plastics into ocean.
Develop solid waste systems.
Land filling.
Plastic waste management strategies .
