applications
1. Capacitor is an electronic component
that stores electric charge.

2. Two conductors isolated

electrically from each other and
from their surrounding, forms a
capacitor .
Different types of capacitors
Electrolytic Capacitor.
Mica Capacitor.
Paper Capacitor.
Non-Polarized Capacitor.
 Ceramic Capacitor.
Capacitance:

When a capacitor is charged, its plates have charges of equal magnitudes but opposite signs : q+ and
q-. However, we refer to the charge of a capacitor as being q, the absolute value of these charges on the
plates.
The charge q and the potential difference V for a capacitor are proportional to each other:

The proportionality constant C is called the capacitance of the capacitor. Its value depends only on the
geometry of the plates and not on their charge or potential difference.

The SI unit is called the farad (F): 1 farad (1 F)= 1 coulomb per volt =1 C/V.
Capacitance :-

The ability of a capacitor to store a charge on its

conductive plates gives it its Capacitance value.
Capacitance can also be determined from the dimensions or
area, A of the plates and the properties of the dielectric
material between the plates. A measure of the dielectric
material is given by the permittivity, ( ε ), or the dielectric
constant. So another way of expressing the capacitance of a
capacitor is:

Charging a Capacitor or working of capacitor
A capacitor is made up of two metallic plates. With a dielectric material (A dielectric
material is a substance that is a poor conductor of electricity, but an efficient supporter
of electrostatic fields)  in between the plates.
When you apply a voltage over the two plates, an electric field is created. Positive
charge will collect on one plate and negative charge on the other.

As the plates become oppositely charged, that potential difference increases until it
equals the potential difference V between the terminals of the battery. With the electric
field zero, there is no further drive of electrons. The capacitor is then said to be fully
charged, with a potential difference V and charge q
Application of capacitor

• capacitor is used as filter in rectifier circuits for

smooth dc output.

• Capacitor is used in high pass and low pass circuits.

• Capacitors are used in many devices such as tube
• light ,fans, chargers etc.
• Capacitor is used in mobile and camera flash etc.
