• ATTITUDE CONSTITUTES AN IMPORTANT PSYCHOLOGICAL ATTRIBUTE OF
INDIVIDUALS WHICH SHAPES THEIR BEHAVIOUR AND PERSONALITY.
• AN ATTITUDE IS THE MANNER IN WHICH AN INDIVIDUAL FEELS ABOUT
SOMETHING, A PERSON, A PLACE, A SITUATION, A COMMODITY, OR AN IDEA
AND CONVEYS AN EXPRESSION OF POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE FEELINGS ABOUT
THE SAME.
• AN ATTITUDE IS THE PREDISPOSITION (VULNERABILITY/TENDENCY) OF THE
INDIVIDUAL TO EVALUATE SOME OBJECT IN A FAVOURABLE OR AN
UNFAVOURABLE MANNER.
• ATTITUDES VARY IN SEVERAL WAYS LIKE
• DIRECTION - FOR OR AGAINST SOMETHING
• DEGREE – FAVOURABLE/UNFAVOURABLE/NEUTRAL OR INDIFFERENCE

• IT IS OUR DISPOSITION, PERSPECTIVE, VIEWPOINT, OR OUTLOOK.
IT IS HOW WE VIEW THE WORLD.
• ATTITUDE IS A STATE OF MIND
• YOUR ATTITUDE IS YOUR MIND-SET
• IT IS THE WAY YOU LOOK AT THINGS MENTALLY
• ATTITUDES ARE EVALUATIVE STATEMENTS
• THEY INDICATE ONE’S FEELINGS EITHER FAVORABLY OR
UNFAVORABLY TO PERSONS OBJECTS AND OR EVENTS.
CHARACTERISTICS OF ATTITUDES

1. VALENCE – IS THE DEGREE OF FAVOURABLENESS OR UNFAVOURABLENESS.


2. MULTIPLEXITY – THE FACTORS THAT CONSTITUTE TO ATTITUDE FORMATION.
3. RELATION TO NEEDS – CHANGES WITH WHAT YOUR NEED IS.
4. CENTRALITY – HOW IMPORTANT A PARTICULAR THING IS TO WHICH THE
PERSON HAS AN ATTITUDE? IF IT IS OF HIGH IMPORTANCE THE ATTITUDE
WILL NOT CHANGE.
5. ATTITUDES AFFECT BEHAVIOUR – OUR BEHAVIOUR IS RULED BY ATTITUDE
UNLESS AN EXTERNAL FACTOR INTERVENES.
6. ATTITUDES ARE INVISIBLE – IT IS A PSYCHOLOGICAL PHENOMENON.
7. ATTITUDES ARE ACQUIRED – LEARNED OVER THE YEARS AND NOT
HEREDITARY.
8. ATTITUDES ARE PERVASIVE (COMMON) – FORMED THROUGH SOCIALISATION.
FORMATION, IMPORTANCE & RELEVANCE OF
ATTITUDES

• ATTITUDES ARE ACQUIRED/LEARNED.


• THEY ARE MOSTLY TEMPORARY IN NATURE.
• A POSITIVE ATTITUDE HELPS YOU COPE MORE EASILY WITH THE DAILY AFFAIRS
OF LIFE.
• IT BRINGS OPTIMISM INTO YOUR LIFE, AND MAKES IT EASIER TO AVOID
WORRIES AND NEGATIVE THINKING.
• IF YOU ADOPT IT AS A WAY OF LIFE, IT WOULD BRING CONSTRUCTIVE CHANGES
INTO YOUR LIFE, AND MAKES THEM HAPPIER, BRIGHTER AND MORE
SUCCESSFUL.
• WITH A POSITIVE ATTITUDE YOU SEE THE BRIGHT SIDE OF LIFE, BECOME

E.G. FOR AFFECTIVE COMPONENT – GOOD, BAD, LIKE, DISLIKE ETC.


E.G. FOR COGNITIVE COMPONENT – WE BELIEVE SOME IS INTELLIGENT OR
STUPID, ETHICAL OR UNETHICAL ETC.
E.G. FOR BEHAVIOURAL COMPONENT – WE ACT UNFAVOURABLY OR
UNFAVOURABLY TOWARDS SOMEONE ETC.
BOTH COGNITIVE & BEHAVIOURAL COMPONENTS ARE TOGETHER CALLED
OVERT COMPONENT.

EFFECTS OF ATTITUDE ON BEHAVIOUR
• THE STRENGTH WITH WHICH AN ATTITUDE IS HELD IS OFTEN
A GOOD PREDICTOR OF A PERSON’S BEHAVIOUR.
• THE STRONGER THE ATTITUDE THE MORE LIKELY IT THAT WILL
AFFECT BEHAVIOUR.
• HENCE ATTITUDES WILL HAVE A VERY
STRONG INFLUENCE UPON A PERSON'S BEHAVIOUR.
• ATTITUDES ARE INFECTIOUS AND CAN AFFECT THE PEOPLE
THAT ARE NEAR THE PERSON EXHIBITING A GIVEN ATTITUDE,
WHICH IN TURN CAN INFLUENCE THEIR BEHAVIOUR AS WELL.
• UNDERSTANDING DIFFERENT TYPES OF ATTITUDES AND THEIR
LIKELY IMPLICATIONS IS USEFUL IN PREDICTING
HOW INDIVIDUALS' ATTITUDES INFLUENCE THEIR BEHAVIOUR.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PERSONALITY ATTITUDES &
PERCEPTION
• PERSONALITY IS THE QUALITY OF A PERSON THAT MAKES
THEIR CHARACTER.
• ATTITUDE IS SOMEONE'S REACTION TOWARDS A CERTAIN
SITUATION OR PERSON ACCORDING TO THEIR PERCEPTION.
• PERCEPTION IS THE WAY A PERSON VIEWS SITUATIONS AND
HOW THEY MAKE THAT PERSON FEEL. IT RELATES TO POSITIVE
OR NEGATIVE WAY OF THINKING.
• IF ATTITUDES LEAD TO BEHAVIOUR, THEN BEHAVIOUR TOWARD
SOME OBJECT MIGHT BE INFLUENCED BY CHANGING
INDIVIDUALS' PERCEPTIONS OF THE OBJECT.
• FOR EXAMPLE. VIEWS AND VOTING BEHAVIOUR AND
CONSUMER BEHAVIOUR IN THE MARKETPLACE.

• DISCIPLINE HELPS TO TRAIN YOUR BODY AND MIND IN
ORDER TO COMBAT OUR BITTER MOODS THAT BIND
OUR MOTIVATION AND PASSION TO LEARN SKILLS IN
ORDER TO ACHIEVE SUCCESS. THE COMBINATION OF
DECISIONS AND ACTIONS CAN HAVE A BIG IMPACT IN
OUR LIFE.
• ATTITUDE MOTIVATION IS ABOUT HOW PEOPLE THINK
AND FEEL. "IT IS THEIR SELF-CONFIDENCE, THEIR

• STRESS IS ANY UNCOMFORTABLE "EMOTIONAL EXPERIENCE ACCOMPANIED BY
PREDICTABLE BIOCHEMICAL, PHYSIOLOGICAL AND BEHAVIOURAL CHANGES.“
• THE ABCDE MODEL
A = ADVERSITY
B = BELIEF
C = CONSEQUENCES
D = DISPUTATION
E = ENERGIZATION
• ADVERSITY: SOMEONE CUTS YOU OFF IN TRAFFIC.
• BELIEF: YOU THINK, “I CAN’T BELIEVE THAT MAN WAS SO RUDE AND SELFISH!”.
• CONSEQUENCE: YOU ARE OVERCOME WITH ANGER AND STARTS YELLING AT THE
OTHER DRIVER.
• DISPUTATION : “I AM OVERREACTING. I DON’T KNOW WHAT SITUATION HE IS IN.
• ENERGIZATION : ACTIVELY CELEBRATE, THE POSITIVE FEELINGS.
ATTITUDE & ADJUSTMENT
• AN IMBALANCE IN ONE'S LIFE — CAUSED BY AN
ABUNDANCE OF NEGATIVITY AND A LACK OF FUN AND
PLAY — WILL EVENTUALLY MANIFEST INTO A
BAD ATTITUDE THAT WILL BE A CHALLENGE TO SHAKE
OFF. PUT BALANCE BACK INTO YOUR LIFE BY DOING
THINGS THAT MAKE YOU SMILE.
• THE BASIC IDEA OF THE COGNITIVE DISSONANCE THEORY
RELATING TO ATTITUDE CHANGE, IS THAT PEOPLE ARE
MOTIVATED TO REDUCE DISSONANCE WHICH CAN BE
ACHIEVED THROUGH CHANGING THEIR ATTITUDES AND
BELIEFS.
