Sarimanok
• A legendary bird of the Maranao
• A popular symbol of Muslim art of the Southern
Philippine islands.
• Also known as “Papanok” in its feminine form
• The Sarimanok was said to be derived from a totem
bird of the Maranao people called the Itotoro.
Okir
• The origins are said to be pre-Islamic
• Okir motif is an artistic design of the natives
of Maranao of Southern Philippines
• Also called as Okkil
• Okir refers to traditional and unique carving
as well as floral and geometric designs(often
based on complicated leaf and vine pattern)
• The Naga (sea serpent) and the Sarimanok
are creatures traditionally featured in okir

• A distinct and beautiful form of visual
arts is found in the Yakan tribe’s
make-up, also known as Tanyak Tanyak
• Tanyak Tanyak is worn only for
weddings.

• Maniktegiyas- A necklace or bracelet of beads from dried fruit seeds to protect from illness caused
by evil spirits
• Maniksembulan- Necklace or bracelets made of a bamboo stem cut into short pieces;serves as
added protection
• Crocodile tooth necklace- for fortune
• Snake bone belts- to guard from pain
• Triangular amulets- Has symbols wrapped in black cloth against bullets(also known as anting-
anting).

• Pegupaan- a bamboo container for
chewing betel nut
• Lutuan- a small bronze box with
engravings carried at the waist
T’boli accessories
• Hilot- a heavy brass belt worn by
women during festivals
• The bells hung from the distinctive
brass or beaded belts signal the
arrival of a woman
Suwatlmimotis
• A wooden comb with colored glass
beads hanging from it, it’s usually
worn towards the back of the head
Brass making
• The kulintang is a musical instrument
composed of eight different sized brass
gongs laid upon a wooden rack
• The kulintang is accompanied by larger,
suspended gongs and drums
• It’s the main melody instrument and is played
by striking the bosses o the gongs with two
wooden beaters
Gandang

•A two headed cylindrical drum


•The Gandang drum is part of the
kulintang ensemble
Duahanagong pair
• Consists of a Bua which is a giant sized gong, • And a pulakan, a narrow shaped gong
