Rape Culture in the
Philippines
 “The entire country has fallen short of addressing the issue of rape.
Based on 2015 PNP statistics, at least one Filipino woman was raped
every 58 minutes. One in 3 adult deaf women are victims of rape.
Although rape and rape-slays in our country are persistently reported,
many cases filed by rape victims are still dismissed by prosecutors and
judges, denying justice to the women and girls.” -Rappler
Rape Culture in the
Philippines
“Illiteracy isn’t our main enemy, but rather, the prevailing culture of silence. “–Katrina
Legarda

 “With every rape joke thrown to elicit laughter, uninvited catcalls to indecent
proposals sent, and unsolicited dick pics disguised as romantic conquest, and our
inactive encouragement in the form of tolerance, we are only breeding the airborne
virus of rape culture.” –Geraldine Antegra

Rape Culture in the
Philippines
Victim Blaming

In every case of sexual allegation, victims are always unnerved and thrown off with the
question, “Why did you put yourself in such situation?” –Geraldine Antegra

 “This is rape culture, which breeds the harmful notion that male-incited sexual violence is
inevitable because that is what we’ve come to expect of them, and that the woman’s job is
to stay alert, vigilant, and avoid tempting the proverbial beast resting inside every man,” -
Chang Casal
Rape and Male Victims
Rape committed against boys is only considered as sexual assault, which carries a lesser

penalty than if the victim was a girl. –B. Del Rio

According to a study by the Council for the Welfare of Children and

UNICEF, reported just last year, more males within the age of 13 to 24 years old

experience sexual violence than females. “If we look at the numbers, it’s more males who

experience sexual violence when most of us assume that the results would tend to lean

more towards females,” Faye Balanon, child protection officer of UNICEF

Philippines, said.
Rape and Male Victims
This shows how crucial gender equality is, in our justice system. Even if

the numbers were different, the current law we have makes no sense. As

Pan International noted, “Sexual violence is sexual violence. Whether boy

or girl, there is no difference to the trauma.”
