FRAME OF THEORY
1. Reading and reading strategy
Reading is one of the important skills that are needed by the students from elementary
school until university level.
The use of strategies in reading requires the reader to think about how to approach the
text in order to decode and retain information (Roe & Ross, 2006: 12).
2. Narrative text
According to Anderson (1997), narrative text is a text that has a purpose to entertain the
reader or listener. However, narrative can also be written to teach or inform, to change
attitudes or social opinions and to show the moral of a story.
3. Story Mapping
Story map is a graphic or semantic visual representation of a story. The map will
illustrate a way to provide an overview of a story. It may consist of brief information
about characters, setting, problem, goal, events and resolution.
FRAME OF CONCEPT
The concept of using a story mapping in teaching reading comprehension of narrative
text proposed by the writer in this research will follow Farris (2004) in implementing the
technique.
1. Firstly, the teacher introducing to students the concept and the benefit of using
story mapping technique, one of them is to develop their comprehension in reading
a text.
2. Secondly, the teacher explaining the major components of story mapping through
identifying a story first concerning to figure out the title, theme of story, the
important characters and personality traits of specific participant of story, then
identifying the orientation or significant plot developments.
3. Third, the teacher having students to read independently.
4. Then, the teacher asking students to complete story mapping worksheet on theirs
after students use story mapping independently.
METHODOLOGY
Form of research
The writer will use classroom action research in this study. Since there are problems found regard
to the students’ narrative text in Eleventh grade students of SMAS Taman Mulia, Action
Research is an appropriate design to help the teacher finds the right technique for teaching in
order to pull students interest in learning English. Burns (2010) describes classroom action
research into four steps. They are planning, acting, observing, and reflecting.

RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS
a) Students Participants
The participants of this study are XI IPA students of SMAS Taman Mulia. There are 26
students in total. This class have difficulties in following the lesson.
b) Teacher Participant
Teacher participant is an English teacher who teaches eleventh grade students in SMAS
Taman Mulia.
TECHNIQUES AND TOOL OF DATA COLLECTION
■ Technique
In collecting the data, the writer will use several approaches to measurement and data collections; they are;
a) Observation
b) Measurement Technique

■ Tools
a) Observation Checklist
b) Field note
c) Test
TECHNIQUES OF DATA ANALYSIS
To know whether Story Mapping technique can improve students’
narrative text comprehension or not, the writer will use the result
from observation and test. The writer will use qualitative data.
