To meet Well Engineering Challenge:
1. Cost-effective reduction
2. Deep water environments
3. Narrow pore pressure/fracture gradient
windows
Definition
• Expandable Tubular
is a system for increasing the diameter of the
casing or liner of an oil well by up to 20% after
it has been run down-hole.
Type of Expandable Tubular
• Expandable Open Hole Liner
• Expandable Cased-Hole Liner
• Expandable Liner Hanger
• Expandable Open Hole Cladding
• Expandable Sand Screen
Open Hole Liner
• Reducing Cost
• Reducing “telescoping” effect
• Allow to reach deeper well than conventional
Expandable Cased-Hole Liner
• Casing Repair Solution/Internal Cladding
• Seal off old perforation
Expandable Liner Hanger
• Minimal Loss of ID
• Reduce the occurrence of the hydraulic
leaking
Expandable Open Hole Cladding
• Isolate unstable formation
• Isolate water flow
• Shut-off water influx in an open hole
completion
Expandable Sand Screen
• Reduce draw-down for production
• Reduce risk of early gas and water
breakthrough
• Its production rates more than gravel pack
rates
Run Procedure
Run Procedure – Expandable Open
Hole Liner (cont’d)
Case Study of Expandable Tubular
• Success Story
• Gulf of Mexico
Ultra-Deepwater (around 7800 ft water depth)
First casing design, without SET, was not able
to reach TD because of loss of hole size.
Second casing design, with SET, was able to
reach TD
Case Study of Expandable Tubular
• Failure Story
• Gulf of Mexico
Conclusion
• Expandable Tubular Technology is one of
technological breakthrough in facing the
challenge in energy industry
• Types of Expandable Tubular:
- Expandable Open Hole Liner
- Expandable Cased-Hole Liner
- Expandable Open Hole Cladding
- Expandable Casing Hanger
- Expandable Sand Screen
Conclusion
• Expandable Tubular,
- reducing cost
- reducing “telescoping effeect”
- allowing operator to reach deeper TD
- repairing casing damage
- seal off old perforation
- shut off water influx
- seal off water flow
- sand control (expandable sand screen)
