Need for a Systematic Study of Schools favorite subject of people from different walks of life grounded on daily experiences and observations The Need for a Systematic Study of Schools The discussion about schools has been the favorite subject of people from different walks of life. For example, the analysis of school and its role in social, economic, political, cultural, moral, and global life has been the interest of social philosophers, reformers, politicians, economists, policy makers, developmentalists, scholars, and other professional groups. The Interdisciplinary Analysis of Schools Numerous fields have put interest in schools such as philosophy, psychology, law, history, economics, and political science. Philosophy looks into the deeper meaning of the existence as goals of schools in the individuals and society. Psychology provides learning theories and principles as well as development stages of the learners that guide effective and meaningful teaching and learning process. Law provides legal framework to which teaching and managing schools are practiced. THE INTERDISCIPLINARY ANALYSIS OF SCHOOLS There is no single discipline that has sole privilege of analyzing schools, but all these disciplines bring out a meaningful and integrated collection of understanding of schools as a formal educative institution. DEFINING SOCIAL DIMENSIONS OF EDUCATION Social Dimension of Education- one of course that studies human diversity with the commitment of promoting social literacy, social competence & social efficiency to pre-service teachers and teacher practitioners.
Human diversity- means understanding the diff. and uniqueness of
individuals. Social efficiency- condition characterized by valuing human diversity, developing respectful and responsible behaviors, flexibility, and adaptability of learners in a complex, ill-structured and rapidly changing environment. Howitt Et Al defined social literacy as possessing the skills to simply recognize and accept the diffs. of individuals without making value judgment. Ex: seeing someone of a different culture to your own, yet you are not able to judge that person by his differences. Social competence- possessing the social, emotional, and intellectual skills and behavior needed to succeed as a member of society and the world. Why Social Dimensions of Education is offered to pre-service? The place where individuals live today is a world of diversity. People differ in many ways as to age, ethnicity, gender, religion, political beliefs, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, gender indentity, and race. Thus, it makes the course broad in scope and multi-disciplinary in approach. A course that relies heavily on social science theories and researches to perform its social analysis of group life. SOCIOLOGY AS THE PRINCIPAL DISCIPLINE IN THE STUDY OF SOCIAL DIMENSIONS OF EDUCATION Social Dimensions of education introduces a wide range of social science theories and researches as they relate to education, much widely used theories and researches in the course are derived from sociology. Sociology 1. Sociology is a branch of science that uses systematic methods of empirical investigation and critical analysis developing and refining a body of knowledge about human social and activities. (Anthony Giddens) 2. Sociology is the scientific study of social interactions and of social organization. (Michael Hughes) 3. Sociology is a systematic study of social life created by people and in turn influencing their behavior in a continuous interaction. (R. Schaefer) 4. Sociology is the study of human behaviors as they are affected by social interactions within groups, organizations societies and the planet. (J. Ferrante) UNDERSTANDING THE SOCIOLOGICAL LENS TO STUDY SCHOOLS As a field of discourse, sociology systematically analyzes the school, the community, and the relationship among their members. Sociologists observe and analyze schools, particularly their educational practices and ordinary activities that are not given much attention and thoughtful consideration. Empiricism methods where sociologist gathering facts to make theories in order to avoid abstract speculation about the relationships they are investigating. Auguste Comte (Father of Sociology) propounded that while many aspects of society are observable to individuals in a vague manner, scientific method uncovers sociological phenomena that are not always so obvious. The Nature and Approach of Sociology The empirical nature and approach of sociology are grounded on Platos assumptions about man and society. These assumptions constitute the blueprint and cardinal truths to which sociologist make their investigations of the individuals and the social behavior in the school, community, and other social settings. The ff. are Platonic assumptions, according to Bolender (2007) 1. Man is an organism that tends toward survival. 2. Man is a social animal that survives in groups. 3. Man lives in an ordered society that developed through the social patterns that are established through the rules, truth, and structure he creates. 4. The order of society, particularly its social processes, structures and interaction is knowable. EDUCATION AND SCHOOLING: ARE THEY ONE AND THE SAME? Understanding the difference between education and schooling is important in social dimensions of education. The principal reason for education to be largely equated with schooling is that in the 1970s, education was measured by the years of schooling and the type and level of educational credentials an individual had achieved. These concept pervaded in those years because of the three assumptions:
Only schools could meet all the learning needs of individuals.
Education could be achieve once and for all during the school years. Anyone who lacked schooling was classified as uneducated. Education - broader term than schooling; means to draw out, facilitating the realization of the full human potentials of an individual that takes place in formal and informal settings. Schooling sum of experiences, activities, and processes which occurs within the educational institutions. FOUR TYPES OF EDUCATION IN MODERN SOCIETY 1. Informal education refers to incidental learning derived from home, church, mass media, peers, internet, and other educative agencies and social institutions which are not organized, specified, anticipated or predicted. 2. Formal education refers to the education which normally takes place within the four walls of the classroom with the presence of teachers, guided by a set of organized activities that are intended to transmit skills, knowledge, and values, as well as to develop mental abilities. 3. Non-formal Education refers to organized instruction that takes place outside school settings meant to upgrade skills of workers or provide new skills to out of school youth and adult illiterates. 4. Alternative learning system/ education refers to the learning system, which can be a practical option for those who do not want to trained under the formal schooling, due to various circumstances in life.
