Key words and definitions • Water separation – exhaust system where the water is separated from the exhaust gas so that the water can be discharged at or below the water line and the gas above the water line. Of particular importance on generator sets so that you don’t get the added noise of water splash. • Backpressure – any restriction of the flow of exhaust gasses through the exhaust system. Important to consider the engine manufacturer’s recommendation for maximum allowed when sizing an exhaust system. Basic design principles
• The role of a muffler in a wet exhaust
system is to conduct the products of engine combustion – noise and exhaust gas – overboard in a safe manner. • When addressing noise, there are two types of mufflers – absorptive and reactive. Basic design principles • Absorptive mufflers depend on substances to reduce noise. In a wet exhaust system that substance is the induced water. All of our mufflers are examples of absorptive mufflers. • Reactive mufflers use a system whereby the sound waves are reflected back into the oncoming waves thus attenuating the noise. The line of Centek Vernatone mufflers is an example a reactive muffler which is also an absorptive. Why fiberglass? • All of Centek’s products are made from fiberglass for the following reasons: – Incredible range of strength – Light weight – Non-corrosive when exposed to gasoline or diesel fumes mixed with fresh or salt water. – Electrolysis and welds in stainless steel are eliminated – Resistant to high temperatures unlike plastic or rubber mufflers Choosing the right exhaust solution • Three important parameters to consider: – Engine Location – Exhaust system size (diameter) – Noise reduction Choosing the right exhaust solution • Engine location – Engines located at or below the LWL require some type of lift muffler. Engines located aft or mid ship and above the LWL can utilize an inline muffler • Exhaust system size – Larger engines with higher horsepower require larger diameter exhaust and more space. Backpressure can be an issue if the sizes are not adequate. Centek’s engineering staff can help assure accurate sizing. Choosing the right exhaust solution • Noise reduction – Muffler size and internal design will determine the amount of noise reduction achievable in a given installation. Generally, larger mufflers provide better silencing than small mufflers. However, space is often an issue. Centek’s engineers are available to design the optimal solution. Designs and applications
• The following is a list and description
of the general Centek designs. Please note that there are hundreds of variations of each offered to address your specific needs. As always, Centek engineers are available to guide you through the selection process. Vernatone • The original FRP water-cooled muffler. Inline muffler for gas or diesel applications where the engine is located above the LWL. Vernalift • Applications for inboards, sailboats and generators using either diesel or gasoline. Works with engines located above or below the LWL. Underwater Exhaust • Underwater exhaust systems reduce the chance of exhaust gasses flowing back into the boat and eliminate soot from forming on exterior surfaces. Available in horizontal or vertical configurations. Gen-Sep • Used in conjunction with a Vernalift muffler on generator sets to separate gas and water from the exhaust. The water drain can be located below the water line to eliminate water splash during overnight moorings. Combo-Sep • Combines a Vernalift muffler and a highly efficient gas/water separator into a single unit. Recommended for above LWL installations. Custom designs • 80% of our products are custom designed. Centek engineers are available to work with you to design a system based on your specific requirements Available finishes • Depending upon your needs, Centek offers 4 different finishes: – Yacht Quality – Gel-Coat – Standard black – Standard White Other items available • Vernatube – the foundation of many of our exhaust products. Glass filament wound using our specially designed resin. • Exhaust fittings – made from various sizes of Vernatube in a variety of configurations. • Centek developed the Gen-Kleen Filter
system in response to customers who wanted to get rid of the sheen that appears around their boat when the diesel generator is running. • This patented system binds hydrocarbons to a filter system and discharges water without sheen. Gen-Kleen
