• Wet exhaust – system whereby water is injected to
cool exhaust gasses.
• Inline muffler – system used where discharge from
the exhaust manifold is well above the LWL.
• Lift muffler – system used where the discharge from
the exhaust manifold is below the LWL.
Key words and definitions
• Water separation – exhaust system where the
water is separated from the exhaust gas so that
the water can be discharged at or below the
water line and the gas above the water line. Of
particular importance on generator sets so that
you don’t get the added noise of water splash.
• Backpressure – any restriction of the flow of
exhaust gasses through the exhaust system.
Important to consider the engine manufacturer’s
recommendation for maximum allowed when
sizing an exhaust system.
