Nation’s pride at stake

- Apoorv gupta

Believing in the age old story, the CWG organizers are still riding the
tortoise hoping it to win the race but this time, most probably, the rabbit is
going to make it first and sadly enough they don’t know how to get off their
slow and steady ‘vahan’.

With India wining the bid for commonwealth games in november 2003, the stage
was set to show the world that the idea of emerging India is no myth but reality. It
was a golden opportunity to substantiate Incredible India – the image PR teams
had created over a decade. And with 7 years of Preparation period we did have
time at our disposal. So with India being the world’s fourth largest economy and
having an elephantine pool of human and natural resources, it should have been a
cake walk. But, with all those scamsters sitting at the top, all we have managed to
do is to invite world criticism and disrepute to our motherland. With just six days
remaining in the mega event everything looks to be in shambles with broken
bridges, unlivable apartments, unhygienic surroundings and stray dogs roaming
around.

The real picture of our preparedness for the games first came out two months back
when TIMES NOW exposed the dubious deals inked by the organizing committee
and the state of affairs at the venues. Even with multi-crore scams coming into
light the political top brass of our nation kept mum and allowed the OC to carry
on. But with ten days remaining in the opening ceremony they finally picked up
the wake up call. With PM Dr. Manmohan Singh coming into picture, things were
expected to improve. He did take away the charge from OC and gave it to GoM;
something he should have done a little earlier. Even giving the charge to GoM
headed by Mr. Jaipal Reddy was rather disappointing. Down on spirit, What India
needed was a public figure; someone like Rahul Gandhi who could inspire people
and make them believe that they can do it. Even when analyzed politically, it
would have been a fantastic move to enhance his public image because with India
having a huge manpower holding a reasonable event is always possible and it
could have been easily used to increase his admirers. With Rahul Gandhi hitting
the right notes, a successful game under his leadership would have further
consolidated his candidature for Prime Ministership.

Then we have people at prime positions playing the Blame games. Indian Leaders
have long been known for their diplomacy and balanced remarks but those
responsible for organizing the games are as dumb as donkeys passing haywire
comments in public. Ms. Sheila Dikshit, few days back, in a press conference said,
“There may be water dripping somewhere…a wall may collapse due to rain. These
minor hitches and glitches do come around.” It’s height of irresponsibility and
shamelessness on the part of Delhi CM. What if a wall collapses on you Ms.
Sheila Dikshit? Then we have OC secretary Mr. Lalit Bhanot passing the most
unexpected and berserk statements ever. Two days back relating to dirty
apartments he said, “Westerners have different standards of hygiene, we have
different. Its nothing to be ashamed of.” What kind of an impression was he trying
to give to the world about India? That Indians are filthy, that they are aboriginal,
crude and incompetent. Mr. Bhanot if you cannot do things in a proper way atleast
don’t give the impression that it is the Indian way doing things…the world is
listening. And how can we forget Mr. Suresh Kalmadi; the person who promised
us the best ever commonwealth games? He has been playing the blame games for
past two months and simultaneously has been giving reassurances but now, when
it is all out in public, he appears to be the new epitome of Corruption. To sum up
the current situation I would borrow something from the movie 3 Idiots.
Suresh kalmadi ne toh desh ka balatkar kar diya
and with many of top athletes turning their backs to India it seems as if they are
saying, “ithe, ithe, jahapanah tofa kabool karo”

Rather then doing any good to India what these games have actually done is to
expose India’s soft underbelly of corruption and inefficiency. It has taken India
back atleast 20 years in the eyes of the world.

What kind of Impression are the leaders giving to the younger generation? We
don’t want to be looked upon as inferior and incompetent by the rest of the world.
The games do have a demoralizing effect on the youth of this country. Everyday
we hear something bad about CWG and the world critising us for our under
preparedness. And think about those NRI’s living in uk, Canada, Australia and
numerous other participating nations. Compared to them we are rather in a more
comfortable situation. Atleast we don’t have to face our foreign counterparts in
person. They have to face them everyday. Its hard to imagine how embarrassing
the situation is for them. It may also become the cause for racist attacks for some
time to come. Why do every time a bunch of inept people have to make us feel
humiliated? Well humiliation is an understatement. After all this is over they will
have to answer the whole nation.

We do have a lot of lessons to learn from these games but as of now the only way
we can salvage the image of India is by holding a reasonable game. The task is
still achievable provided that the work is done efficiently. With some amount of
prayers we can still pull this off.
