    DEGREES OF COMPARISON (BC 3.

    10)

    Degree of Comparison consists of:

    Positive Degree
    Comparative Degree
    Superlative Degree

    1. POSITIVE DEGREE

    Positive Degree shows common characteristic of objects.


    (as tall as, as expensive as, as old as, etc.)

    Pattern :
    Subject + to be + as + adjective + as .....

    Example :
    1. This dictionary is as expensive as mine.
    2. His brother is as clever as my sister.
    3. This book is as thick as that one.

    2. COMPARATIVE DEGREE

    Comparative Degree is used to show different characteristic of objects.

    a) 1 syllable

    (big →bigger, tall → taller, old → older, etc.)

    Pattern :
    Subject + to be + adjective + er + than .....

    Example :
    1. This dictionary is cheaper than mine.
    2. Your father is older than John's father.
    3. Linda is prettier than her elder sister.

    b) 2 syllables or more

    (expensive → more expensive, difficult → more difficult, etc.)

    Pattern :

    Subject + to be + more + adjective + than .....

    Example :
    1. Your book is more expensive than mine.
    2. This lesson is more difficult than that one.
    3. English is more important than Spanish.
    3. SUPERLATIVE DEGREE

    Superlative Degree is used to show levels "most" of objects.

    a) 1 syllable

    ( young → the youngest, old → the oldest , etc.)

    Pattern :
    Subject + to be + the + adjective + est .....

    Example :
    1. He is the cleverest among them all.
    2. Jones is the oldest student in our class.
    3. You are the laziest member in our club.

    b) 2 syllables or more

    (intelligent → the most intelligent, beautiful → the most beautiful , etc.)

    Pattern :

    Subject + to be + the + most + adjective .....


    Example :
    1. Jones is the most intelligent student.
    2. This is the most beautiful flower.
    3. That is the most expensive shirt.
