NEGATIVE PREFIXES
o UN- is the most common negative prefix with adjectives and is usually found with
adjectives that do not come from Latin: unwilling/ unselfish/ unhappy / Unfair /
Unusual/ Unoficial
o IN- is usually found with adjectives originally from Latin: invisible/ independent/
indirect/ ineloquent/ inefficient/ incorrect/ invalid
o IM- the prefix –in becames –im when the adjective begins with m or p:
impossible/ immoral/ impractical
o IL- the prefix –in becames –il when the adjective begins with l: illegal/ illiterate/
illegible.
o IR- the prefix –in becames –ir when the adjective begins with r: irrational/
irregular/ irrelevant
Negative prefixes can be also added to some verbs to express the opposite
action: disagree/ disappear/ defrost/ decentralize/ undress/ unlock
