The Kominas
"Sound: Vintage-style punk mixed in with surf, psychedelia and classic South-Asian and
Middle-Eastern rock.
Why You Should Care: The Kominas exist in part to challenge peoples underlying assumptions
about what punk, indie or any of these descriptors mean. Some consider them leaders of
so-called Tacqwacore punk movement, but labels like that dont get at the variety in their
music. These four South Asian-American, mostly Muslim men specialize in punchy, riff-heavy
rock and their lyrics address the experiences of people of color and Muslims in America. (They
say at least one group member is on a government watch list.) They also grapple with racist
rock fans, a tokenizing music press and an underground that seems uninterested in politically
aware groups of color.

Anik Khan
Born in Dhaka, Anik Khan immigrated to the United States with his family at an early age and
settled in Queens, NY where he describes his low-income building as a true melting pot of
different ethnicities sharing the same daily struggles. Despite his neighborhood's rough
exterior, he found beauty and inspiration in the spirited hustle in his neighbors. Today, his
music reflects the cultures that surrounded him throughout his upbringing.
He raps from a first generation perspective but speaks to a worldwide audiencea true
representation of hip-hop's universal appeal. Khan's sound innovates hip-hop fundamentals
with worldly influences. This unique blend of hip-hop has gained Khan fans across the
eastern seaboardfrom his native New York City to Florida. Now with his latest release, Anik
Khan is ready to bring a new experience to hip-hop listeners everywhere.
Anik Khan truly believes that culture is the most divine form of education and, through his
music, he plans on schooling a new generation.
Humeysha
Written and conceived in India, Humeysha channels diverse influences, echoing sounds from
New York to New Delhi. The multilingual self-titled debut evokes a wayfarer's meditative
travels through heritage and homeland. Recorded and produced in NYC by Zain Alam and
Dylan Bostick, the project comes to life with the addition of Adrien DeFontaine and John
Snyder.
"Humeysha melts modal guitars and puja bells with a reverbed vocal that scans as post-
Panda Bear, but with less Brian Wilson and more fodder for mantra." - Revolt

American filmmaker Vivek Bald's absorbing examination of the Asian Underground movement in English rock
in the 90s combines interview and performance footage of all the key players-Talvin Singh, Fun-Da-Mental,
Cornershop, Joi, and Asian Dub Foundation. Nearly every musician interviewed talks about experiencing anti-
Asian racism while growing up. Bald shows how defensive identification with England's black population led
them to embrace reggae and hip-hop in addition to Indian sounds like Bollywood sound track music,
bhangra, and Indian classical music. A passing moment of attention from the mainstream media and major
record labels has embittered some of the performers but left others more focused and still hopeful.
