Creativity in Movies Kyle Taylor-Jones 4th Period

Tim Burton has a style in how he makes his movies. though Burtons movies tend to be

quite dark and dreary they have a childish element to them. This is also true in his characters,

who have creativity and a sense of individuality and isolation. In his movies, Burton reveals that

creativity can stem from isolation and individuality through the use of camera angles, lighting,

and sound.

Burton uses camera angles to give the appearance of power or weakness. For example, in

Edward Scissorhands Burton uses a high camera angle on Edward when he firsts meets Peg. This

shows that Edward is an outcast, different, and isolated by making him look weak and different.

Another example is when he uses low camera angle on Edward as he is carving an ice sculpture.

He uses this angle to show how creative Edward was, even though he was isolated and he is seen

different. Through many, if not all, of Burton's movies he uses camera angles to show that

creativity can come from isolation and individuality.

Burton also uses high key lighting to give the audience a sense of awe . For example, in

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Charlie, Willy Wonka, and the others go to a room known as

the TV Room. This room was made so Willy Wonka could send candy to TVs. This shows how

creative Willy Wonka is because of his isolation and individuality. Another example is in Edward

Scissorhands when Peg enters the yard of Edward's mansion. In contrast to the mansion and its

gate, the garden is bright and colorful. This emphasizes the creativity that Edward had even

though he was isolated. Both Willy Wonka and Edward were isolated yet the things they took

pride in were bright and full of awe. They were both isolated, yet they were both very creative.
This is because they were creative because of their isolation. There was no one to tell to tell them

to not be creative.

Lastly, Burton uses sound to set the tone for a movie or scene. For example, in Edward

Scissorhands, Edward was giving Joyce a haircut and Burton used Non-Diegetic music to let the

audience know that Edward was being kind and creative. This proves creativity because it was

bright and joyous and had a sense of creativity. Another example is in Charlie and the Chocolate

Factory when the group went to the lab. In the lab Burton uses Diegetic music to set the tone of

creativity with all of the scientific noises and the dialogue explaining everything that Wonka

made. This shows creativity because it has an inventive tone to the scene and emphasizes the

technology and the wacky candies made by wonka.

Burton's message that creativity can stem from individuality and isolation is to everyone.

People are trying to be like other people and are also trying to match everyone. This diminishes

the individuality of people. If everyone looses their individuality then no one would be creative

enough to make their own path. their own style, their own personality. In this world of trying to

be normal we loose the true sense, to be ourselves, no matter how abnormal.
