INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The field of information technology has improved tremendously in the past decade with the

invention of all kinds of new technologies for example e-commerce, e-learning, e-business,

and e- registration to mention a few.

In this technological era of education and doing business, information is considered to

be an important asset for any academic institution. The availability of students data and

feedback can help an educational institution to align its business processes according to the

needs of its students and stakeholders. The effective management of these data can help

institutions reach out directly to their students and stakeholders and also streamline its

activities.

This project work on the design and implementation of student registration system on

tertiary institution is aimed at the modern way of addressing the concerns raised by students,

in order to maintain an efficient service delivery system. Such concerns raised are the manual

handling of registration and student records, with also the overall view of improving

efficiency in the registration process.

Student tuition fees is a system that could easily manage its student body while also

providing added bonuses, with its main goal being to ease the transfer of information. It

simplifies the registration process through a web-enabled, user-friendly wizard and digitizes

all supporting documents using intuitive process and tools. The education system requires a

tremendous amount of data and documentation, and this computerized registration solution

allows institutions to focus less on processing paperwork and more on what matters most

such as meeting the educational needs of their students by having a cost-efficient, secure

registration process that allows for easy access to students files (Brakel, 2003).
Many institutions in Nigeria have been somewhat quick to recognize the powerful

transformational potential of portals and have developed and implemented their own. One of

such is the portal of Federal Polytechnic Ado-Ekiti,Ekiti State, Nigeria. Broadly one could

argue that an institution with increasing student numbers, operating in a society with an

increasing desire for instant access to information, needs to carefully consider new ways in

which it can interact more efficiently with its students (Brown 2000; Twigg and Obinge

1997).

Students tuition is done by students mostly at a registration center. Students have to

move physically to campus to complete the tuition registration fees process. The following

are the problems inherent with the current system.

1. Insufficient utilities in handling students tuition fess processing

2. Inability of students to remotely register and access their registration number

immediately.
3. Students spend too much time in processing their registration and worse, this can only

be done with their physical presence on campus.

The current system is outdated and can only be accessed through a clerk in the

registration office/center. The new system will enable all students to access the system

through a PC connected through the internet. Essentially, the idea of e-registration is to lead

students to a convenient way of registering online. Students will be able to save their time,

money, plus submit their information with just in few minutes. In additional, it can be done

anytime, anywhere according to their preference, provided it is within the stipulated time

period.
1.2 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of this study is to provide the overview of the existing system, sport the

shortcomings, design and develop a new system that will be able to overcome these

limitations of the existing system.

This project work has the intention of developing system that can provide fast retrieval,

update and storage of information and data inclusively such that access to information can be

done with a greater ease.

1.3 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

This project work is aimed at producing a system that will eliminate the difficulties and

unnecessary protocols inherent in the existing system. From the feasibility study the

researcher took, he came out with an alternative which is much better in terms of cost

effectiveness, time saving, reliability and clarity of output.

1.4 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

As was mentioned before that there is not really a real system is existing for the tuition

class which is happening nowadays in Saudi. It might be called as a semi system of tuition

where some students individually go at some particular tutors to take the class whether at

tutors home, students home, or in schools classes after the working hours where there is a

very big chance for both tutors and students to not attend the class because of being after a

long-tiring day, therefor they need to go back home having their rest time.

A final exam is requiring many students to look for tutor to have a tuition class for better

performing in the exam. Many students parents are not allowing their children to go for

tuition avoiding some obstacles of going out of the house. The most famous reason is because

of no trusts by the parents towards their children if they allow them to go out. This is because

many times, accidents have occurred when the children go out in a reason of study, so they go
and meet friends that many of them can be irresponsible and careless, so they go somewhere

else and do nothing.

Some of these accidents such as, cars accidents, drifting, and so on, and because of such

things, they get caught by the police, admitted in the hospitals, got in jail, fight, or else, and

all that is because of no behaved responsible and wasting a time in the roads, and in the end,

do things are not related to tuition or study.

As secondly reason is because the high fee of the tuition class by the tutor because the

tutor will take the advantage of opportunity that the students will pay however the class costs.

Previously when there was no real system of tuition to manage classes for students, the tutors

were controlling the prices that how they like, taking an advantages of the students need for

the tuition class, therefor the students have no choice than to pay whatever the tutor asks.

This depends on the student who wills to pay the particular amount. Here, many students

are exploited by tutors as well as the parents will need to pay for the tuition although it is an

expensive but they still have to pay.

1.5 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

The method used in this study is including:

i. Existing system were critically reviewed and the analysis of the present system

were scrutinized.

ii. UML will be used to draw the system architecture both structural and behavioural

part of the proposed system.

iii. Visual C#.NET will be used for implementation and SQLite as back-end

(database)

iv. System testing will be performed on the system designed to see how efficient and

perfect the system is.

1.6 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This project work is set to design and implementation of computerized Student tuition

fees, a case study of Federal Polytechnic Ado-Ekiti. It covers the registration of both old and

fresh students.

It does not cover the registration of students tuition in other polytechnics of Nigerian

Universities although with little amendments, it could be used by any desiring universities or

polytechnic. This project does not cover records, students affairs and others hence it cannot

be used in the processing of students results etc.

1.7 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This project work the design and implementation of student tuition fees will be of

great significance to tertiary institutions in the sense that it will help in overcoming the

problems of manual operations. Such problems includes; difficulty experienced in updating a

record in a file, difficulty faced by students in retrieving their lost receipt from bursary, and

inability of students to remotely register and access documents like school fees receipt.

This institution will make use of the software to access their students record. The

institution will through the knowledge gained in this work discover the need to fully adopt

this new system. The students also will greatly benefit from this project as it will enable them

to have a new experience of registration when the system is finally adopted.it will also make

them to embrace any policy strategy and innovational steps taken by the institution to

enhance the quality of education in school.

1.8 EXPECTED CONTRIBUTION TO KNOWLEDGE

The study specifies the student tuition fees with the use of computer, these help students to

know more about how student transactions could be managed and control. In this view,

students also know more about how to use UML application and fundamental knowledge in

programming language related to this study.

CONCLUSION

Technology, organization and people must cooperate and support one another to

optimize the performance of the entire system. Integrating the role of information systems in

registration of student tuition fees system. This helps to identify, correct defects, problems,

and inefficiencies. In this way, an institution can monitor as well as address its students

complaints and develop quality improvement solutions that will increase client satisfaction.

This proposed system if implemented will allow students to register remotely without having

to be physically present on campus. This would be a huge improvement in service to students

as well as cutting off cost for the polytechnic.

Realizing a project of this nature is very exciting. However, the students encounter a

lot a problem which I believe if looked into, will go a long way toward reducing the tension

associated with the design implementation and construction of the project.

In spite of the constraints encountered during the implementation of this project, the

aim of my project is well accomplished. Moreover, an attempt to accomplish this project has

taken care of the delay of registration and that of registration number. This has also forced me

to learn, practically, what is involved in the design and implementation or computerization of

project (existing or non-existing).

Finally, the Polytechnic system and indeed the department of Computer Studies as a

course that must be taken by graduating students, it is a step in the right direction to withstand

the future challenges in computing in companies, industries, institutions and the world at

large.
