GLORIA STEINEM

Dear Connecticut Friends:

I'm on the road a lot and so I see a lot of political races. Now I've discovered an important one right next door.
Because I know Connecticut is often subject to New York media that doesn’t cover local races very well, I wanted
to make sure you know that you have a great candidate and a lot at stake in the upcoming election.

Kevin Lembo, the state's Healthcare Advocate and a former Assistant State Comptroller, is the Democratic
nominee for State Comptroller. He has been a leader of state and national efforts to improve access to health care,
and he is also a longtime ally of the majority of Americans who want to protect reproductive freedom as a
fundamental right.

Now, Kevin is being challenged in the August primary by a candidate who would turn back the clock on health
care in general, and reproductive health care especially.

It would be a serious loss if Kevin’s longtime advocacy for women’s health care were to be symbolically
defeated in a state like Connecticut. For instance: with State Comptroller Nancy Wyman and Attorney General
Blumenthal, he filed suit against the Bush administration to block its efforts to impose a “midnight regulation” giving
medical providers free reign to turn away women seeking reproductive health services based on the so-called
“conscience clause” that takes away the obligation of a health care system to put the patient first.

He has worked closely with state and national advocates and members of Congress to stop anti-choice activists
from using the national health care reform debate to forward their own agenda and turn the clock back on national
majority needs and views.

With other allies in Connecticut, he monitors the impact of restructuring and mergers in the health care delivery
system to ensure that there will be no loss of access to important medical and educational services.

He has been a reliable friend to majority views in Connecticut and the country. All he needs now is our support.

Remember: reproductive health care has become an issue in this race because the State Comptroller is
responsible for purchasing health care for state workers, retirees and their families. Kevin’s primary opponent has
not only been endorsed by the ultraconservative Family Institute of Connecticut (FIC), but he also serves on its
Legislative Advisory Council. His victory could mean both limiting the family planning and sex education services
that reduce the need for abortion, and criminalizing abortion that is now legal and safe. This race could give the
FIC the opportunity to gain strength and influence in state policy and administration. We cannot allow that to occur.

For these, and so many other examples of Kevin's excellence and hard work, I am writing to ask you to support
him as the next State Comptroller.

Please take action today – forward this note to friends, volunteer for the campaign, and make a donation
(maximum $100) to help Kevin Lembo to victory in August and November. Go to his website:
www.kevinlembo.com for more information.

This is too important an election to sit on the sidelines. Do whatever you can, and educate other voters on
what's at stake here. The contrast is stark.

From a New York neighbor.
