Thermocromic Pigment
What is Thermochromic Pigments ?
Reversible Temperature Reactive Material
I. Introduction
These special effect pigments allow for a visual response to change in temperature. The
pigments are composed of micro capsules that change color reversibly.
When the temperature is raised to a specified temperature the pigment goes from color to
colorless. The pigment returns to the original color as it cools down. The color and
temperature are selected by the user.
Temperature resist:230~280
Thermochromics of different colors can be mixed with each other. Or can be blended with other dyes
and pigments .

. Activation Temperature
Activation temperatures between -15 and 70 are available. The activation temperature is
defined as the temperature above which the pigment has almost(>95%) achieved its final clear or
light color end point.
V. Solvent Compatibility
The thermochromic pigments are sensitive to polar solvents. Below is a list of compatible and
non-compatible solvents.
1)Compatible Solvents:
Glycols, Water, Xylene,Isobutanol, Methyl Pyrrolidone,White Spirits, High Chain Ketones, High
Chain Alcohols ,Toluene, Naptha, Silicones Mineral Spirits, High Chain Acetates, Butanone Oxime
2)Non-Compatible Solvents:
Acetone, PMA, Propyl Acetate, Ammonia, alcohols
. Character:
1)Light stability
Long term exposure to UV and some fluorescent lights can degrade color intensity.Extreme exposure
of more than several days of direct sunlight may degrade the color of the microcapsules, though it
will probably still change color. More than 600hours of a strong fluorescent light may also cause a
loss of color in the thermochrmic .
NOTE: The Thermochromic paints have a low UV tolerance without top-coating with an appropriate
UV inhibitor clear coat .So for exterior paint, use a clear coat to protect it .That will increase the
longevity of the paint .
2)Thermal stability
The processing temperature below 230 degrees will be better. Although thermochromic
microcapsules can survive temperatures >200 however they can only be exposed to these
temperatures for a very short periods of time (<10 seconds) .When thermochromic pigment is
used for plastic masterbatch or plastic molding products , you should pay close attention to
control processing temperature.
About the resin, it is available together with those solution temperature at below 230 .Such as
the PP resin, PE resin and EVA resin. To the contrary, those higher than 230 are not
recommended. Such as ABS, Acrylic, PC and PS materials of resins. When you must use these

resins but have no other choice ,also with a good idea to take----- you can do resin surface
treatment by printing or Coating.
3) Mixing
Thermochromic powders should be mixed thoroughly before using. No intense shear is necessary as
the capsules are in primary particles form .Too much shear energy will destroy its thermochromic
function .
