Mixed Reactions to
Trump Presidency
Vol 11; No. 20
www.streethypenewspaper.com
By Patrick Maitland
Editor-Street Hype
Trump defeated Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton by securing 270 Electoral College votes and
currently leads Clinton 290-228 during the
Tuesday (Nov 8) national elections.
Entering Tuesday elections with most
polls showing Clinton with marginal but
steady leads, Trump's chances of victory
were seen as remote.
The Electoral College map was
considered favorable to Clinton, who
was said to have several paths to the
winning threshold of 270 electoral
votes.
However, Trump obliterated Clinton's firewall, picking off unexpected wins
in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, as well as
sweeping swing states like North Carolina,
Florida and Ohio.

His comments upset people as he came across sometimes as unsophisticated,

KINGSTON, Jamaica -rofessor Sir Hilary Beckles, vice-chancellor of The University of the West Indies
(UWI) has called on US President Barack
Obama to grant a posthumous pardon to Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Jr., for his 1923 mail
fraud conviction in the United States.
Beckles call comes in the wake of Jamaicas National Heroes Week, the annual
celebration of the countrys heroes and martyrs. It also comes at a time when countries
and communities in the Caribbean and across
the world are observing the United Nations
declared Decade for People of African Descent.
Marcus Garvey was the victim of
trumped up charges orchestrated by the late J.
Edgar Hoover, the famously anti-black director of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, Beckles said. We are today calling on
President Obama, himself the victim of racist

IMF approves
US$1.64 billion
stand-by arrangement for Jamaica
WASHINGTON:
he executive board of the International
Monetary Fund (IMF) on Friday approved a three-year stand-by arrangement
(SBA) for Jamaica to support the authorities continued economic reform agenda.
Access under the SBA arrangement amounts
to about US$1.64 billion (SDR 1,195.3 million), the equivalent of 312 percent of Jamaicas quota in the IMF.
The Jamaican authorities have indicated that they will treat the arrangement as
precautionary, and do not intend to draw on
the new SBA unless exogenous shocks generate an actual balance of payments need.
The executive board approval will make
about US$411.9 million (SDR 300.1 million) available, and the remainder in six
tranches upon completion of semi-annual
program reviews.
Following the executive board discussion on Jamaica, Tao Zhang, deputy managing director and acting chair, said: Jamaica
has established a commendable track record
of program ownership and implementation
under the extended fund facility (EFF).
Macroeconomic stability has been entrenched, evidenced by low inflation, the
build-up of foreign currency reserves, and a
decline in the current account deficit. Fiscal
discipline and proactive debt management
have helped place public debt on a downward trajectory. Still, growth is low, poverty
and unemployment are high, and crime and
security challenges impose a serious drag on
growth.

Jamaican lawyer and author who

gay community, says she has experienced
backlash since its release in August.
Audrey Thomas, a New York-based attorney, launched Does God Hate Homosexuals? No, God Cannot Hate, on August 20
at York College in Queens, New York.
The book was inspired by her evolving
views on same-sex relations after years of
scorning homosexual behaviour.
That change of heart has not gone
down well with the Jamaican community.
They have been surprisingly hostile. Many
questioned my own straightness, said 45year-old Thomas.
The third staging of her York College
event was severely affected. Most of the
usual supporters did not show up. We generally have an audience of 400-500 people;
this year we were lucky to get 70. I was

truly shocked at the level of hate I experienced, said Thomas, who noted that 90 per
cent of sponsors withdrew their support because the Jamaica Forum of Lesbians, AllSexuals and Gays (J-FLAG)s logo was on
her flyer. In an interview with the Jamaica
Observer in August, Thomas admitted to
once being violently homophobic.
But after successfully representing an
American lesbian couple in a civil case, her
thoughts on same-sex partnerships
changed.
Born in Kingston, Thomas migrated to
Brooklyn, New York in 1981. She has practised criminal and civil litigation in New

olidays bring get-togethers filled with music, food and
conversation. However, for those who experience hearing loss, the season often takes on a whole different sound.
Those with hearing loss often end up feeling isolated from
the festivities, but there are ways you can make sure they feel
comfortable joining the fun.
A survey* by Rayovac, which was conducted online by
Harris Poll, found that 56 percent of Americans say talking
and catching up with family members is their favorite part of
family gatherings, but nearly one out of every five (19 percent) say they have experienced difficulty communicating
with someone who is hard of hearing.
If youll be escorting a family member with hearing loss
to a holiday event, be sure their hearing devices are in good
operating condition with batteries that are able to power all
of the devices features, like Rayovac. The hearing aid battery
company has also introduced the Gift of Hearing this holiday
season, a campaign in which a portion of proceeds from its
battery sales benefit the Starkey Hearing Foundation.
This holiday season, make the most of the opportunity
to share quality conversations with loved ones who have trouble hearing by following these simple tips from Shari Eberts
of livingwithhearingloss.com:
Get their attention before speaking by saying their name or
tapping them on the shoulder.
Give some context as to the topic of the conversation to help
them infer.
Make sure they can see your lips. Stand in a well-lit area and
be sure you are facing them directly, with your hand away
from your face while talking.
Know that background noise can provide difficult distractions. If youre hoping for more than a passing greeting, find
a quiet place where you can visit comfortably.
MobileHelp allows you to summon emergency help 24 hours a day, 365 days a year by simply
pressing your personal help button. Unlike traditional systems that only work inside your home,

all your favorite activities such as gardening, taking walks, shopping and traveling all with the

no limit to your help buttons range.* With our GPS feature activated, we can send help to you,
even when you cant talk or tell us where you are.
No landline? No Problem! While traditional medical alert systems require a landline, with
MobileHelps system, a landline is not necessary. Whether you are home or away from home, a
simple press of your help button activates your system, providing the central station with your

raditionally, and in the public mind, the first Thanksgiving Day occurred in 1621 when the Plymouth Pilgrim
community joined in a feast with local Indians to celebrate
the first harvest that the colonists had reaped on American
soil. Indeed, 90 Indians and 53 Pilgrims feasted for three days
at that event, and it was an official day of giving thanks to
God for his blessings.
However, the colonists were only carrying on the Calvinist Protestant tradition of designating special public days of
thanksgiving for the blessings of the Almighty. It was not really something new in kind.
The feast probably did include turkey since William
Bradford informs us in his Of Plymouth Plantation that the
land had a "great store of wild turkeys, of which they took
many." Incidentally, there is indication that the colonists were
familiar with turkey from back in England, even though it
was a native American bird.
That is because the Spanish had brought back and popularized turkey in Europe in the 1600's, and in England, it had
become a major competitor to goose for Christmas dinners.
The exact date of this thanksgiving feast is uncertain, but it
seems to have happened in late September or early November.
Thanksgiving Traditions
Some of the main traditions of the season include: Providing free Thanksgiving dinners for the needy, holding food
drives, and giving charitable contributions in general.
The Salvation Army is especially famous for enlisting
volunteers to serve Thanksgiving dinner to the poor. Attending church services where congregants give thanks to God for
the year's blessings.
These are typically held the weekend before, the day of,
or the weekend after Thanksgiving Day. The saying of grace

ive years ago, I married a 40year-old woman I'll call "Sandra." We had dated for eight years.
My problem is, after all this time
Sandra still has not moved into my
home. She has never moved any of
her personal belongings in either.
And she runs home to her
mother's house five days a week.
When I try to talk to Sandra about
this, she tells me she will bring her
"stuff" over, but then she returns to
her mother's and nothing changes.
Please tell me what to do.

NUTRICARE
Preparation
Have a plan. Eat a light dinner if you ate a big
lunch that day. Or, if you know ahead of time
that you're going to a restaurant, plan to have
lighter meals during the day. Knowing menu
terms and cooking basics makes ordering easier, especially if you have special dietary
needs.
Choosing a Restaurant
Think ahead. Consider meal options at
different restaurants and look for places with
a wide range of menu items. Check online
menus, if available, for nutrition information
ahead of time.
Ordering
Be deliberate when ordering. Balance
your meal by including healthier selections
from all the different food groups such as lean
protein foods, low-fat dairy, fruits, vegetables
and whole grains. Look for freshly made entre salads that give you "balance in a bowl."
For example, entre salads with baked or
grilled chicken, beans or seafood provide protein along with fiber and other nutrients. Ask
for dressing on the side so you can control the
portion size.
For sandwich toppings, go with veggie
options including lettuce, tomato, avocado
and onion; if using condiments, choose
ketchup, mustard, relish or salsa.
Round out your meal by ordering
healthy side dishes, such as a side salad,
baked potato or fruit. Boost the nutritional
value of your baked potato by topping it with
vegetables, salsa or chili.

BUSINESS HYPE

FAMILY FEATURES:
t may seem that anyone with the guts to
run their own small business should be
able to master marketing with ease. And yet
marketing strikes many small business owners with dread.
In fact, a common refrain from business
owners is: "I know my business is good, but
I have no idea how to market it." Recently,
The UPS Store conducted a survey of small
business owners to identify their concerns.
One-third of respondents said marketing or
branding their business was the biggest challenge they face.
To put it into perspective, marketing
their businesses topped other common concerns of business owners including lack of
time and lack of financial resources. Meanwhile, more than half of those surveyed said
marketing ranked "very high" or "extremely
high" on their list of key priorities.
This contradiction becomes more concerning when you factor in the role small
businesses play in the nation's overall business landscape. According to the Small Business Administration, small businesses
(companies with less than 500 employees)
provide 55 percent of all jobs and have provided 66 percent of all net new jobs since the
1970s.
The small business sector could be

marketing, said Marcus Lemonis, entrepreneur and host of CNBC's "The Profit." Yet
nearly 40 percent of respondents in The UPS
Store's survey agreed or strongly agreed that
they feel "overwhelmed" by the challenge.
"Any business owner who can make a
strong, persuasive pitch for the funding of
their business can probably do the same for
the products or services of that business,"
Lemonis said.
To help small businesses transfer the
skill of selling to funders to selling to cus-

* Understand that people are the cornerstone of your business. Find the right people
to make sure they're marketing and selling
your brand the way you would.
* Be vulnerable, be honest and communicate. This stands true for every aspect of
your business, including developing the next
steps of your marketing strategy. If you share
your business or your brand's story with a
genuine approach, your success will increase.
These are things most small business
owners can do. Yet there are also marketing
processes and skills that many small business
owners aren't familiar with and need help
from others to acquire.
Among those who can provide help are
The UPS Store's 4,500 locations across the
nation. These stores are independently
owned and operated, so store owners understand the challenge firsthand. Part of their
mission is to help local startups, entrepreneurs and small businesses solve their problems, including marketing, printing, shipping
and mailboxes.
"I encourage small business owners to
find new ways to break down the marketing
barrier and learn marketing processes that
will attract new customers and grow their
business," Lemonis said.
