After winning a Golden Bear at the last Berlin Film Festival, José
Name: Padilha's Elite Squad went on to spark controversy over the way it
depicted drug trafficking and violence in Rio. In the UK, the movie

where do you live?
Based on the novel Elite Squad, written by ex-police officers André
UK Batista and Rodrigo Pimental, the film reveals the ins and outs of drug
trafficking in Rio de Janeiro. Unlike City of God, Elite Squad depicts the

With a large dose of humour, Celia Mara is launching yet another CD

packed with disturbing lyrics "that are sang loudly to disguise the pain".
The irreverant tone of the compositions is also explicit in the theatrical
way in which Celia sings: some verses seem more spoken than sung.
Whilst her earlier work was always characterised by a fusion of Latin
rhythms, funk and samba, on Santa Rebeldia repetitive electronic beats
reign supreme.

The pun is too tempting for a band famous for songs with football
references: Brasilian four-piece Skank misses some sitters in what
could be an interesting album for its departure from the Britpop-
inspired previous works (Cosmotron and Carrossel). In theory, the idea
of flirting with an electro-rock atmosphere sounds fresh, but in practice
it stumbles with lyrics much more suited to the usual pop formula, as
well as the scatting made simultaneously so famous and irritatingly
overused by singer and lead guitarist Samuel Rosa - as anyone who
remembers Skank's assassination of The Police's Wrapped Around Your
Finger will remember. There are exceptions, though: 'Para-Raio' and
'Canção Áspera' and 'Notícias do Submundo' are great songs in which
the band sounds fresh and spontaneous as Cristiano Ronaldo in his
heyday. But three tracks out of 12 is a very low score…

Der Rathausplatz bei Sturm und Regen und die etwas andere
Location. Dort tanzen die Frauen, zwar nicht auf den Tischen, aber
doch heftig zur Musik einer charismatischen Musikerin:

Christoph Huber, der Mann auf der Bühne mit dem kahl geschorenen Schädel begrüßt
die Anwesenden mit den Worten: „Herzlich Willkommen auf dem Rathausplatz zum
Konzert von Célia Mara. Wir haben keine Kosten gescheut, den Platz zu verkleinern
und wetterfest zu machen!“ Und tatsächlich kam mir der Rathausplatz gestern noch
irgendwie größer vor. Und mit rotem Stoff waren die Wände auch nicht ausgeschlagen,
eine Bar gab’s ebenso wenig wie die zwei Etagen, auf denen sich das Publikum
tummelt. Was moderne Bühnentechnik doch alles heute machen kann! Aber seit wann
sagt Christoph Huber eigentlich die Konzerte bei Jazz Fest Wien an? Mehr Videos auf Youtube
Gerade als ich mich frage will, wo ich denn nun hingeraten bin, klärt mich eine SMS Artists Cloud
darauf hin, dass das Konzert der Brasilianerin wegen des bösen Wettersturzes in Wien
vom Rathausplatz ins Porgy & Bess verlegt wurde. Eine gute Entscheidung nach dem Abdullah Ibrahim
gestrigen schmerzhaften Kälteschock im Arkadenhof. Der mir übrigens den Ausspruch Angela Tröndle Bernd Satzinger
eines Kollegen in Erinnerung rief. Er meinte: „Gute Musik und guter Jazz müssen weh
tun!“ Als ich diesen Spruch zum ersten Mal hörte, fragte ich mich auch, wo ich denn da

mit ihrer international zusammengesetzten Band schafft sie es mühelos, bei der Tower Of Power
Präsentation ihrer neuen CD „Santa Rebeldia“, das Publikum zum begeisterten Fotos
Mittanzen zu bringen. Ohne „Clap-Your-Hands-Gestiken, einzig allein durch die Kraft
ihrer Musik. Unter dem Obertitel „Nu-Brazil“ läuft der Musikmix aus brasilianischer
Percussion, Ska-Rhythmen mitsamt Gebläse, Turntable-Geziepe und eben dem
mitreißenden Gesang ihrer kämpferischen Texte und der eingängigen Melodien zu
großer Form auf.

Vor mir ruckeln und zuckeln jetzt jedenfalls die Körper. Hauptsächlich die von Frauen.
Und das ist gut so. Ein Mann mit Kamera sagt: „Die haben hier alle Spaß. Die
Musiker und das Publikum!“ Ja, das ist keine Musik, die weh tut. Sondern eine, die
Spaß macht.

Ein bekannter, mittlerweile verstorbener deutscher Jazz-Kritiker erzählte mir einmal,

dass er aufgehört habe, mit der zumeist männlichen Jazz-Polizei über Wert und Unwert
von Jazz zu diskutieren. Viel wichtiger seien ihm die unmittelbaren Reaktionen von
Frauen. Würden sie anfangen, sich zu bewegen, sei dies nahezu immer ein Kriterium
für gute Musik. Und was kann man mehr von einem guten Konzert erwarten, als dass
hinterher alle BesucherInnen eine Spur glücklicher sind als vor dem Konzert?

Was dann wohl morgen Abend passiert, wenn der brasilianische Strahlemann Sergio
Mendes im Konzerthaus zum Samba und Bossa aufspielt? Wienerinnen,die ihr

brasilianisches Blut entdecken? Männer mit Rosen zwischen den Zähnen, leichtfüßige
Romeos in weißen Anzügen, so braungebrannt wie die Frauen mit ihren luftigen, mit Kalender
Federpuscheln geschmückten Kostümchen? Österreicher mit Zuckerhüten auf den
Köpfen und heißestem Samba(l Oelek) im Schritt? Caetano Veloso, der vor einigen Juli 2008
Tagen in der Oper gastierte, war jedenfalls vom Wiener Publikum begeistert: „Die

Wiener haben die Musik im Blut. Und sie können meine Lieder fast besser singen als
ich.“ Ist Wien also gewissermaßen das Rio Mittel- und Osteuropas? Ich frage mich, wo 1 2 3 4 5 6

Mit ihrer Mischung aus lateinamerikanischen Rhythmen, Sehnsuchtsmelodien, Reggae, Balladen,

Rock und sogar Rap hat sich die von Wien aus operierende brasilianische Sängerin nicht nur in der
World-Music-Szene viele Freunde gemacht. Ihr letztes Album „Bastardista“ wurde auch von jenen
umarmt, denen der ewige Balkan-Beat schon ein bisschen zu blöd geworden ist. Auf „Santa
Rebeldia“ setzt Célia Mara ihre Art, Stile zu fusionieren, nicht minder elegant und
abwechslungsreich fort, bis die leidigen Genregrenzen ganz verwischt sind. Selten klang
Globalisierung so stimmig und sinnlich.

Mit ihrem Album „Amorosa“, einem Tribut an Joao Gilberto,

setzte Rosa Passos 2005 zum Sprung in die Weltmusik-Charts
an. Bekannt wurde die dreifache Mutter aus Brasília bereits
vorher durch ihre Zusammenarbeit mit dem Meistercellisten
Yo-Yo Ma. Auch auf ihrem aktuellen Album „Romance“
widmet sie sich mit sinnlicher, einfühlsamer Stimme dem Bossa
Nova. Punktganau instrumentiert, begleitet von
Ausnahmemusikern und langjährigen Wegbegleitern wie
Bassist und Arrangeur Paulo Paulelli, schöpft sie mit insgesamt
12Titeln aus dem reichhaltigen Fundus der mpb. Von „Doce

Mitwirkenden, und die Mischung macht’s: Ein
mitreißendes Album mit Songs, die melodische
Hooklines haben und sogleich ins Ohr und in die
Füße gehen. Kein Wunder, dass die Sängerin ein
begehrter Live-Act ist; kein Zweifel, dass dieses
Album wie die Vorgängeralben höchste
Platzierungen in den Worldmusic-Charts erreichen

Selbstbewusst
und vielseitig

Schon der Titel verrät, dass Célia Mara, Wahl-Wienerin

brasilianischer Herkunft, auch mit ihrem neuen Album
nicht den Weg gepflegter Anpassung gehen will.
"Santa Rebeldia" ist der "Heiligen der Furchtlosen und
Widerständigen" gewidmet, und entsprechend
rebellisch gestaltet die Musikerin auch ihre Musik.

Célia Mara weiß sich dabei in guter Gesellschaft: Ihre

Version des Mestizo-Sounds aus Rock, Samba, Latin
Pop, Funk, afrikanischen Rhythmen, Reggae und
Hiphop wird immer populärer. So ist es kein Wunder,
aber wohl bislang ihr größter Coup, dass Celia Mara
die andalusische Sängerin Amparo Sanchez, Frontfrau
der Kultband "Amparanoia" als Duettpartnerin für den
Albumopener "matriaméricas" gewinnen konnten. Der
Song war bereits ein Hit in den Multikulti-Programmen
und ist tatsächlich ein fulminanter Einstieg für dieses
nunmehr dritte Album von "Österreichs
Paradebrasilianerin" (ZiB).

Die folgenden neun Songs zeigen Célia Mara von ihrer

besten Seite, nämlich als kraftvolle, charismatische
Interpretin mit dynamischer Stimme, unbändigem
Rhythmus, Leidenschaft, Lebensfreude und immer
wieder mit erfreulich klarem politischen Statement.

Abgesehen von "Matriaméricas", das sie mit Amparo

Sanchez auf Spanisch singt, bleibt Célia Mara ihrer
portugiesischen Muttersprache treu. Mit einer
Ausnehme: Zum ersten Mal wagt sie sich an einen
deutschen Text. "Du und ich" heißt der Song, in dem
sie ihren charmanten Akzent präsentiert. Ein mutiger,
aber gelungener Schritt, mit dem sie eine Brücke
zwischen den Wurzeln ihrer Musik und ihrer neuen
Heimat baut - und zudem gewachsenes
Selbstbewusstsein und ihre musikalische Vielseitigkeit
unter Beweis stellt. Anpassung erscheint oft als der
einfachere Weg, doch Célia Mara zeigt, dass man
langfristigen Erfolg nur dann erzielt, wenn man seinen
eigenen Ausdruck gefunden hat.

Brasiliansk/österrikiska sångerskan och gitarristen Celia Mara bjuder
upp till en rytmfest av yppersta format med kosmopolitisk orkester
och gästande Amporo från gruppen Amparanoia i duett med Celia i
starka Matriamerica, en mix av Manu Chao och balkanstuk á la
Shantel. Och fortsättningen är inte sämre, samhällsengagemang till
differentierade stilar som tango, reggae, funk, samba och brasiliansk
electronica. Fenomental avslutning för övrigt i gospeln Nana Buruke

A truly enchanting album from Algerian exile Souad Massi justified her
esteemed place in the global music canon but she blew everyone away
with an amazing duet with Daby Balde. Essential stuff.

Baaba Maal and Africa 05

The year started with great hopes that finally world aid, trade, HIV and
debt relief would begin to release their crushing dead hand from Africa and
at the same time there was a conscious effort by a huge number of
cultural institutions to focus on the many positive things happening on the
continent. Bob Geldof’s failure to support African musicians left a bad
taste in many people’s mouths but no one showed more dignity and �����������
commitment than Baaba Maal. Whether talking about the problems or ��� ���
putting on fantastic concerts, Baaba Maal got it right in every way.

Mahmoud Ahmed at WOMAD

Old time Ethiopian, Mahmoud Ahmed had a triumphant debut in the UK at
WOMAD ensuring that his is, belatedly, going to be one of the names to
watch for next year.

— she composes, sings,
plays guitar and arranges
her own songs. Her third
album “Bastardista,” released in May, received worldwide acclaim and
remained in the world music charts for three months. On tour Mara fronts a
four-person band with one American and two Austrian musicians providing
back-up vocals, as well as live keys, bass and drums. Here Mara is in her
element. Her vocal range is remarkable and her music creates a beautifully
uplifting atmosphere. And of course, the show comes with all the flair you
would expect from a Brazilian.

Mara’s performance is part of Nazim Nadirov’s “Ethnotronica” series. The

events will bring to Moscow some of the best ethno-electronic performers
from around the world, including both unknown and established artists.
Celia Mara spices up Molodaya Gvardiya from 9 p. m. on November 4.
