East Street High Street Improvement
Programme
Barking and Dagenham Council is delivering a 1.4m
programme of public realm and high street improvements
across East Street, as part of an ambitious plan for Barking
Town Centre.
Current works being delivered include:

A new civic space in front of the former Magistrates

Court consisting of new paving, trees and benches.
Public realm improvements on Clockhouse Avenue,
enhancing pedestrian links between Barking Town
Square and East Street.
Installing secure bin stores, a recycling compactor and
market storage facilities.

New paving and trees being installed on East Street

opposite Short Blue Place.

Upcoming works taking place later this year:

A new catenary lighting scheme, with high quality

lighting suspended between buildings replacing the
existing lamp columns.
The Barking Food Court pop-up restaurant and
Removal of dated street furniture to enable a
cinema held in the former Magistrates Court
smarter centralised layout of market stalls.
New street infrastructure (bollards, electric boxes).
Striking gateway signage at the East Street/Ripple
Road junction.

Funding for the programme has been secured from a

range of sources including Transport for London and the
Mayor of London. The works will improve the quality and
appearance of both East Street and Barking Market,
helping to support local businesses, attract inward
investment and improve perceptions of the area. For more
