Long time ago a remote village, in central China, was inhabited mainly with farmers
and hunters. One day, a poor farmer lost his entire livestock to flood. He prayed hard to God
for help or his family would die of starvation.
Few days later an old man, with long grey beard, passed by his house took pity on
him. He gave him a goose and said. I dont have any expensive thing to give you and hope
this goose will help you to ease your hardship.
A week later to his most surprise the farmer found an egg in his yard. This was not an
ordinary egg. It was a golden egg. He was suddenly overcome with joy. Thereafter, the
livelihood had rapidly improved but the farmer had forgotten his earlier hardship. He became
lazy, arrogant and spendthrift.

Text 3
In the olden times there was a king who was so cruel and unjust toward his subjects that
he was always called The Tyrant. So heartless was he that his people used to pray night and
day that they might have a new king.
One day, much to their surprise, he called his people together and said to them, My dear
subjects, the days of my tyranny are over. Henceforth, you shall live in peaces and happiness,
for I have decided to try my rule henceforth justly and well.
The King kept his words so well that soon he was known throughout the land as The Just
King. By and by one of his favorites came to him said, Your Majesty, I beg you to tell me
how it was that you had this change of heart towards your people.
And the King replied,
As I Who

a sight of a hound chasing a fox. The fox escaped into his hole, but not until he had bitten by
the dog so badly that he would be lame for life. The hound, returning home, met a man who
threw a stone at him, which broke his leg. And the horse, starting to run, fell into a hole and
broke his leg. Here I came to my senses, and resolved to change my rule. For surely, I said to
myself, he who does evil will sooner or later be overtaken by evil.

A long, long time ago, a kind old woman lived next door to a young woman. The young woman
had a very fierce mother-in-law. One day, the mother-in-law chased the young woman from the house.
She said she had stolen some food. The young woman went to see the old woman living next door.
Dont be unhappy! the old woman said. You can stay with me. I will think of a way to make
your mother-in-law ask you to return.
A few evening afterwards, she called at the mother-in-laws house. She carried a lamp in her
hand.
Ah! she cried. My dogs have stolen some food. Can you please give me a light for my lamp? I
want to go and look for them. When I find them, I shall give them a good beating. They have given me
a lot of trouble.
Afterwards, the mother-in-law thought about what she had said, Perhaps my daughter-in-law did
not steal the food, she said. Anyway, she really does not look like a thief. She decided to ask her to
return home.
Several days later, the young woman met the old woman again. She thanked her for her help. It
is nothing, the old woman replied. But now you will understand that it is not always easy to make
people believe the truth.

GIRL ON THE TITANIC
(A true story)
PART 1
Ruth Becker was twelve years old in March 1912 when she traveled from India to England with
her little brother, Richard, aged one, her sister, Marion, aged four and their mother. They were on the
way home to the U.S.A.
After traveling by boat through the Suez Canal and across the Mediterranean Sea, they arrived in
England. They planned to cross the Atlantic Ocean to the U.S.A in a famous new ship, the Titanic.
The Titanic was the biggest and most modern ship in the world, and this was the first voyage. It
was as long as three football fields and eleven stories high. The newspaper said the Titanic was like a
palace. They also said it could not sink.
When the Titanic left England, the weather was good. For the first four days, the passengers
enjoyed life on the ship. Then, on Sunday, April 14, the weather turned cold. The northern part of the
Atlantic is near the Artic Circle, so there were icebergs in the water. At 11.40 p.m. a lookout saw a big
iceberg 500 meters ahead. An officer tried to turn the ship, but it was going too fast and the Titanic hit
the iceberg.
At first, nobody was worried. Just after midnight, Ruth and her mother woke up. There was a
strange silence because the ships engines had stopped.
Ruths mother got up and spoke to a steward outside her cabin. He said, Dont worry. Its only a
small problem,
She went back to bed, but some time later a steward knocked on their door and said, Put your
life jackets on and go up to the lifeboat deck.
Do we have time to dress? she asked.
No Madam, you have time for nothing. The ship is sinking.

THE EARTHQUAKES
Through the action of the plate
tectonics the crust of our planet is
always moving. Over millions of
years the continents drift from one
place to another. They jostle
together and push up mountain
ranges. The movements do not
take place continuously but in small jerks and jumps. It is these jumps
that set up the vibrations that we call earthquakes.
The forces that sometimes move the crust of the earth work all the time, and
cause stresses to be built up in the rocks. Eventually the stresses become so strong that
they make the rock map. The rock whip along a crack called a fault, and this
movement causes an earthquake shock. The shock wave travel outward from the
focus, the point where most of the movement takes place, like the ripples from a
splash in a pond. The point of the earths surface directly above the focus is called the
epicenter. Most damage is usually done there.
When the pieces of the earths crust snap a long a fault, they usually move too
far. Later they may spring back some distance and produce aftershocks, and this may
continue until the rock masses have settled. Then the stresses begin to build up once
more until they are released by the next earthquake.
The different types of shock wave produced by an earthquake travel at different
speeds. Geological observatories around the world can detect them with instruments
called seismographs. By timing when waves arrive, scientists can tell how far away
the earthquake was. A world network of observatories can now pinpoint any
earthquakes focus.
The places most likely to have earthquakes are the edges of the earths surface
plates. Where the plates are jostling each other and being created or destroyed. But
earthquakes cannot be predicted
