1. Introduction
=========================================================================
==
Welcome to my Yu-Gi-Oh GX: Duel Academy (or YGO GX: DA for short) guide.
Here I will cover the basics to the game, the duelists, the exams, timed
=========================================================================
==
3. Newbie
=========================================================================
==
This section is for those that are new to the series and the card game
itself.
3a. Intro
YGO is a trading card game (the obvious must be pointed out >_>) that
takes
strategy and luck to win. The game is played out by using cards correctly
and accordingly to what they state. The aim of the game is to play until
1 duelist's life points has reached Zero, Nothing, Zip, Nada, Rien.
However
there are other ways to win. The 2 other ways to win are:
* Having all 5 pieces of the mighty "Exodia the forbidden one" in your
hand
* Playing Destiny Board and successfully playing the other 4 spell cards
that spell out "FINAL" with destiny board.
I wouldn't recommend either method unless you're playing a game WITHOUT
use
of the Forbidden/Limited rules. The Exodia pieces and the Destiny Board
letters are all limited to having 1 of each card in your deck.
Next, your dueling deck. Your dueling deck must consist of at least 40
cards
and no more than 60. At the same time, you must follow the
Forbidden/limited
rules so you won't have an "Uber and unfair deck".
The cards are divided into categories, attributes and types.
3b. Categories
3c. Attributes
Attributes:
Monsters are divided into 6 attributes: Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, Light,
and
Dark. This affects their compatibility with other cards as well as their
weaknesses. Water monsters make good use of the spell cards known as
"A legendary ocean". If you are using a deck with many water monsters,
this
card will help them greatly.
Types: All cards are divided into types, let's go into monsters first.
Like attributes, types also affect the compability of monsters with other
cards and their weaknesses but due to the fact that there are so many
types
of cards, these are more specific than attributes. The monsters are
divided
into these types...
Dragon - Zombie - Warrior - Spellcaster - Beast-warrior - Beast - Winged
Beast - Fiend - Fairy - Insect - Dinosaur - Reptile - Fish - Sea Serpent
Machine - Thunder - Aqua - Pyro - Rock - Plant.
Plus some others like Spirit, Fusion, Effect and Ritual.
Ritual are blue cards, summoned by Ritual spells and tribute of monsters
that the sum of their levels is equal or greater than that of the ritual
monster from your field or hand.
Fusion are Violet cards, summoned by combining the 2 correct monsters and
using spells such as Polymerization. They can also be summon by their own
effect (VWXYZ monsters) or by effects of monsters like "Cyber Stein".
Spirit monsters are monster that are returned to its owner's hand at the
end of a turn unless "Spiritual Energy Settle Machine" is face up on the
field.
Continuous Traps work just like the spells... The activation is the
only difference. Their speed is level 2.
3e. Phases
Start of game: You start the game by deciding who goes first, then draw
5 cards from your deck and take turns playing.
A player's turn is divided into Phases... Draw, Standby, Main 1, Battle
Main 2, End.
Draw Phase is when you draw 1 card, a trap card set in the last turn can
be activated at this point.
Standby Phase is only used for effects of cards, nothing else.
Main phase 1 is when you do most of the essential things. Summoning
monsters, playing spells, setting traps. 1 normal summon can be done
per turn. Main 1 and 2 are the only time a normal summon can be done.
Battle Phase is when you do battle using your monsters against your
opponent. Here you may activate trap cards to mess with your opponents
monsters and prevent him from dealing damage to you.
Main phase 2 is basically Main phase 1. Thing is that you can't go into
battle again. This phase is best used to set cards if your opponent
screwed you in the battle phase.
3f. Summons
A summon is when a monster enters the playing field. There are different
ways to summon a monster.
Normal summon is when you place a level 4 or lower monster on the field
in face up attack position. 1 normal summon per turn is the limit here.
Tribute summon is a normal summon at the cost of tributing 1 monster
that's already on your field. As I explained before, this is for high
level monsters. levels 5-6 require 1 tribute and all above level require
2.
Special Summon is when you use a ritual, spell, trap, fusion or monster
effect to place a monster on the field. Monster that are special summoned
CANNOT be placed face down.
Flip summon is considered a Special summon. It's when you place a "Set"
monster into face-up attack position. Some monsters have "Flip effects"
which are activated at this time or when attack by an opposing monster
(Unless that monster is Sasuke Samurai or a Mystic Swords Lv?)

The part that covers the duelists, Written examinations, Practical exmans
and timed duels. Let's start with the duelists first.
NOTE: I'm probably missing a few cards so this won't be exact, it's meant
to give you an idea of what you should expect. Also, I will not list the
"Staple" cards (Cards such as Torrential Tribute) as you should expect
such cards from everyone.
This list may suck and be inaccurate so you may want to look at TSmith's
FAQ for better and more accurate stuff there seeing as how it's more
focused. These are just the duelists you've seen duel in the Anime and a
couple more. I won't list them all.

Well that's it, I didn't put much effort here since I got tired of
playing
the game in just 2 days. I continued on till I had completed the game
despite getting bored. I could add a couple more things if asked and
maybe
a section for themed decks submitted by readers (if there are any).
