Surrey Businessman Sees Fiji As Business

Hub

By Asuad Ali

Surrey business entrepreneur Peter Raju

says Fiji presents as the hub for business
in the Asia - Pacific region.
The President and the CEO of Peach
Arch Duty Free said the country has
huge potential for investments under the
new legislation.
Mr Raju made the statement while
taking the Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe
Bainimarama to the tour of his Surrey
business last Friday.
I strongly believe Fiji has come of age
and that by implementing a fair trade and
investment policy the former
citizens have the opportunity to do
business in the country.
Mr Raju says the Bainimarama
government's new regulation on foreign
investors will attract potential investors.
For us to invest in Fiji, we need
to understand the laws pertaining
governments initiatives for fair business
and trade, Raju told Prime Minister
Voreqe Bainimarama.

Prime Minister Bainimarama said they

Special RFMF Security Unit

The Republic of the Fiji Military Forces
now has a special unit to provide
security for international civilian staff
in dangerous peacekeeping areas. They
are operating in increasingly risky areas
of Sinai and Iraq and are certified by the
Americans and United Nations.
This was confirmed by the RFMF Land
Force Commander, Colonel Sitiveni
Qiliho.
There are 120 in the unit, Colonel
Qiliho said. This unit, he said, received
special specific training at the Queen
Elizabeth Baracks in Nabua.
He also said that in Sinai they carried out
their training at the Fijian camp and had
been certified by the Americans.
The Land Force Commander said there
were also members of the unit in Iraq
who have been certified by the United
Nations.
The unit he said played a vital role in
protecting international civilian staff in
Sinai and Iraq.

has thanked the Multinational Force and

Observers (MFO) for its quick response
in his request for heavier weapons to be
supplied to the troops in Sinai.
In my meeting with the Force
Commander I made the request for
heavy weapons and before I left Sinai I
was told theyre going to purchase five
Bradley Rescue Vehicles from America
and grenade launchers.
He said these weapons would enable the
Fijian troops to defend themselves when
attacked by certain elements.

The Bradley Rescue Vehicles are to

transport infantry or scouts with armour
protection, while providing covering fire
to suppress enemy.
A grenade launcher or grenade discharger
is a weapon that launches a speciallydesigned grenade or a grenade cartridge
with more accuracy, higher velocity, and
to greater distances than a soldier could
throw by hand.
Mr Natuva said he had been assured that
all checkpoints would have a grenade
launcher.

Bainimarama To Fijian Muslims In Canada

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says

it is our moral responsibility irrespective
of whichever faith we belong to stand up
against extremism and fundamentalism.
Speaking to the British Columbia
Muslim Association in Canada last
Saturday, he said we must be vigilant.
We know that Islam is under stress
today, torn by competing visions of the
nature of Islam, of its teaching, and of
how Muslims are encouraged to act on
their faith, he said.
You are showing that Islam and democracy
are not only compatible, but that they can
thrive together. You have shownand
we are showing every day in Fijithat
Muslims living side-by-side with people of
other faiths can produce great things.
You have shown that Muslims of goodwill
live their faith in a positive way every day,
and that the world is better for it.
Love, affection and understanding is
what we all must profess and practise.
Indeed I am told that Prophet
Mohammed not only taught and
practised this but also said we must live
our lives in and with moderation.
Muslims are able to put faith into practice
in their everyday lives, he said.
He said to be a Muslim required
commitment and a way of life that
fortified the soul and encouraged a
positive relationship with ones fellow
human beings.
Islam requires its believers to put their
faith into action and practice, he said.
The Prime Minister said the Muslim
community in Fiji had also played a

604.909.4088

pivotal role together with other Fijians

in our countrys achievements.
He spoke about Fiji having a public holiday
to celebrate the Prophets birthday.
Very few countries do this, and we
do so proudly. It underlines the unique
nature of Fiji in our own region a multifaith nation with a new Constitution
that guarantees religious freedom and
establishes a secular state, in which all
religions are equal.
Mr Bainimarama said it was also a gesture
of respect that each Fijian paid to their
fellow citizens of other faiths, because
they were one people and one nation, and
they knew that they had a shared destiny,
no matter what beliefs they held.
Religion, he said, could actually be a
unifying force, a bridge between them
all no matter what they believed.

That is because a sense of spirituality

a belief in something greater
than ourselves is common to the
overwhelming majority of Fijians, no
matter what their religious background.
He said many people were alarmed by
the provision in the new Constitution
that made Fiji a secular state. They
thought that made Fiji non-religiousor
even hostile to religion. Their fear was
unjustified.
Our Constitution simply respects all
religions. Where all faiths flourish in
harmony, morality and goodness prevail.
That is because faith ennobles. And where
morality and goodness prevail, democracy
and good governance will grow.
He said people of faith had an important
role to play in the ordering and conduct
of their society and government, as
individuals and congregations.
They give voice to principle and ensure
that ethics and morality are a part of
our political dialogue. This is essential
for any society, but especially for a
democratic one, he added.
According
to
Mr
Bainimarama,
Government must be pragmatic, but it must
also uphold principle, stand for fairness, and
stay true to the values of its people.
Government, he stressed, must therefore
not give preference to any faith in the
functioning of a secular state.
He said the British Columbia Muslim
Association was the largest Muslim
organisation in Canada and operated
schools and Islamic centres all over the
province.
You do charitable works to help the
needy and less fortunate, Muslim and
non-Muslim, here in British Columbia
and abroad. You help make this wonderful
province an even better place.

Parveena Makes The Most Of Govt

Help

THE assistance extended by Government

to small businesses must be used well to
expand and grow rather than letting it go
to waste.
This was the advice by Parveena Kumar,
who operates a successful horticulture
business known as Parveenas Secret
Garden in Koronivia, to all those getting
any form of Government assistance.
Mrs Kumar, who is originally from
the salad bowl of Fiji, had assistance
worth over $5,000 given to her through
the Commission Central Divisions
Office to facilitate the extension of her
nursery.
Provincial Administer Rewa, Josevata
Suka, who opened the new extension,
said that the assistance will boost
the business that was already luring
customers from as far as Suva and
Navua.
They have been operating the
business for a long time and have been
participating in flower show events. Now
with the extension, they will be able to
expand and boost their income, he said.
For Parveena, this will allow her to
indulge her passion and at the same
time earn some extra money as more
women are getting into the flower
business.
The plants I sell range from $5 to $50
and there are a lot more customers as
more women are now interested in
flowers and some even support their
families through this business, she
said.
Flowers are known for their aesthetic
and therapeutic qualities and Parveena

believes it is not only a good way of

keeping fit but is also a great stress buster.
Future plans for the flower enthusiast
includes importing new plants to
increase her variety which currently
includes anthurium, orchids, desert
roses, bougainvillea, cactus, geranium
and herbs.
Parveena has been in the business for the

last 10 years and gets a lot of assistance

from her husband and son.
Her husband, Jagdish Kumar, in his own
right is a successful farmer specializing
in high value vegetables such as
zucchini, capsicum, purple English
cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli that
he supplies to a well-known hotel and

Council Launches SMS Mobile Services

For Farmers
Farmers, who have registered as members
of Fiji Crop and Livestock Council (FCLC)
will soon have access to key farming
information on their mobile phones.
This follows the signing of a memorandum
of understanding (MOU) between
Vodafone, Digicel and the council.
In the agreement both mobile phone
companies will provide platforms on
which FCLC will introduce a range of
applications over its SMS Mobile Phone
service to its members throughout Fiji.
Council executive chairman Simon Cole
said for the past several months their
team had been organising association
meetings to encourage farmers in
attendance to register as members.
Presently there are fourteen FCLC
associations comprised of the pig,
dairy, grazing, dalo, root crop, ginger,
yaqona, honey, fruit, salad vegetables
and coconut industries, as well as food
processors, exporters and organics.
Mr Cole said there were already in excess
of 4000 registered members from the
different associations and he expected
that number to grow substantially when
the mobile service is officially launched
in October.
He said those who wanted to register as

FCLC members as well as those who are

members and have subscribed to utilise
SMS services should dial 1122 on their
mobile phones.
These mobile phone applications will
include:
The calls will be received by FCLC
personnel qualified to register farmers as
members. For those who have subscribed
they can request an application that best
suits their needs, Mr Cole said.

FCLC will continue to introduce

key services to its members that are
specifically designed to address the needs
of agriculture in Fiji. These services have
been developed to complement those of
the Ministry of Primary Industries and
drive growth in the industry towards
poverty alleviation, food security and
exports. SMS Mobiles is contributing
towards this goal, he concluded.Fiji

NZ Admits Fijian Produce Suspension

Inappropriate
Our Government said the New Zealand
Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI)
has acknowledged to Fijian authorities
that its broad suspension of agricultural
imports from Fiji is inappropriate.
They also stated the move was out of step
with the Bilateral Quarantine Agreement
(BQA) and international standards.
Therefore, the Ministry of Primary
Industries New Zealand has asked to
meet with Fijian officials to resolve the
issue.
In a letter to the New Zealand MPI, the
Fijian Government had objected to the
suspension of trade of the four affected
commodities: eggplants, breadfruit,
mangoes and papaya.
In response, the New Zealand MPI
has agreed that there have been no
documented cases of a fruit fly outbreak
caused by Fijian products.
Additionally, the Chief Technical Officer
at the Ministry of Primary Industries,
Stephen Butcher, has requested a
meeting with the Ministry of Industry,
Trade and Tourism and the Biosecurity
Authority of Fiji.
The request was relayed to the Fijian
Government by the New Zealand High
Commission.
Attorney-General and Acting Prime
Minister
Aiyaz
Sayed-Khaiyum,
confirming this, said the meeting will be
held in Fiji this week, and Fiji will make
a formal request for the suspension to be
lifted.
We are pleased that the New Zealand
authorities have moved quickly and
want to work with us to bring this matter
to an end, he said.
Given Fijis stringent adherence to
international biosecurity standards for
both imports and exports, we have every
reason to believe this matter will be
settled quickly.
And that the suspended Fijian produce
will be once again on its way to New
Zealand.
Fijis flexibility
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum pointed out that Fiji
imports a wide variety of agricultural
products from New Zealand and that
those products occasionally do not meet
Fijis import requirements.
However, we have maintained a
flexible posture to account for occasional
anomalies in New Zealands treatment
of its produce as long as those anomalies
fall within a tolerable range, he said.

604.510.4088

Background
The New Zealand authorities have asked
the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF)
to undertake an audit of the Natures
Way Cooperatives high-temperature
forced-air (HTFA) facility and pathway
certification to meet all requirements
under the BQA.
New Zealand has raised concerns
with regards to the lack of repair and
maintenance of the HTFA facility.
Five consignments were accepted by the
New Zealand MPI on August 5, despite
the suspension coming into effect on
August 2.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said BAF is auditing
the Natures Way Cooperatives HTFA
facilitys operational and technical
specifications and further auditing of the
pack-houses to meet the international
phytosanitary requirements.
This, he said, was to ensure the established
Bilateral Quarantine Agreement exports
pathway is sustained.
BAF has implemented additional
stringent measures that include pre
and post inspection of Natures Way
Cooperatives HTFA treatment, he said.
This is to ensure that all consignments
out of Fiji are within the standards
required by New Zealand.
No Australian restrictions
The Ministry of Industry, Trade and

Tourism and BAF met with the Deputy

High Commissioner of Australia to
ensure that Australian imports of Fijian
Papaya would continue normally despite
the New Zealand action.
The Australian Government has assured
the Fijian government that Australia is
taking no action to restrict imports from
Fiji.
The Australian authorities have
reviewed the import requirements for
Fijian papaya treated through the same
HTFA pathway, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum
said.
They are satisfied with the additional
measures implemented by BAF to ensure
that all exports comply with Australian
requirements, so our exports of papaya
to Australia have continued unaffected.
Furthermore, the Deputy High
Commissioner has offered assistance
through PHAMA programme for BAF to
carry out an audit and for Natures Way
to undertake repair and maintenance of
the HTFA chamber.
BAF and Ministry of Industry, Trade
and Tourism are very mindful of Fijis
international trade obligations.
We will ensure that pathways remain
open without any impediments and
that Fijian exports have optimal market
access. All additional measures required
are in place.

2015 Sugar Crushing Is Ahead Of 2014

Rate

Fijis four sugar mills have crushed

a total of 625,861 tonnes of cane and
produced 72,321 of sugar with a TCTS
(tonnes of cane to tonnes of sugar) of
8.65. Compared to production estimates
for 2015, these figures represent an
increase of 31% for cane and 29% for
sugar, respectively, and a TCTS .035
percent.
This also represents an increase over
crushing totals for the corresponding
period for 2014, which were 604,220
tonnes of cane and 57, 345 tonnes of
sugar.
It is anticipated that present drought
conditions, which the Fiji Meteorology
Office predict will prevail until years
end, will negatively impact cane and
sugar production for 2015.
Harvesting and Transportation
Harvesting and transportation of cane
has proceeded uninterrupted despite
difficulties in gaining direct access to
billeted cane at the Rarawai Mill offloading bay. This was made possible
by the cooperation, support and
understanding of the Fiji Cane Lorry
Transport Association, which assisted
the industry in resolving this matter.
Shortage of cane cutters is an annual
challenge. For this reason, the industry
encourages
the
procurement
of
mechanical cane harvesters in areas of
virtually flat terrain if cane harvesters
are not readily available. Twelve
mechanical cane harvesters currently

operate in country; three in Labasa, three

in Rarawai and six in Lautoka.
Cane Access Roads Maintenance
2,939 cane access roads were in need of
repairs or upgrades at the beginning of
the 2015 crushing season, and work on
these roads is expected to be completed
within the next three weeks. 942 of the
roads identified for repair are in Labasa
and 1,997 are in West Viti Levu at the
Lautoka, Rarawai and Penang sugar
mills.
As of 31 July, 2015, 1,711 cane access
roads have been upgraded or repaired,
marking an increased completion rate of
58.2% over the 43% rate in 2014. This
improvement was due to the support
and cooperation of the Fiji Sugar
Corporation, Sugar Cane Growers
Council, the Roads Committee, the
Roads Sector Committee and the
government-approved contractors who
have worked alongside the Ministry of
Sugar in implementing the governments

$2.5 million sugar production budget for

2015.
Cane Development
During the main planting window from
March to May, approximately 1,500
hectares of new cane were planted.
Approximately 1,200 hectares were
prepared but will not be planted as
drought conditions have threatened
germination. The new planting was
made possible by the governments $5.0
million cane development grant from
the 2015 national budget in addition to
the unused $1.8 million from the 2014
budget allocation of $8.4 million.
The remaining $2.0 million of the $6.8
million cane development budget will
be utilized to irrigate the 1,500 hectares
of new plant so that the crop may better
withstand the current drought conditions.
The Ministry of Sugar and the industry
are confident that the 2015 harvest will
proceed positively, despite the obstacle
of prolonged drought conditions.

Fijian Cocoa In Top 50 For International

Award

Local cocoa sample sent to be part of

the International Cocoa Awards in Paris,
France, has been selected amongst the
top 50 samples. This is from a total of
146 received from 35 countries for this
years edition.
Managing director and founder of Cacao
Fiji, Arif Khan, sent a sample of the
Forestero Amelonado variety from the
Matasawalevu, Dreketi Cocoa Project,
to be part of the competition.
The sensory evaluation of all 146
samples (as liquor and untempered
chocolate) was done during June and
July by the panel of international
experts, Mr Khan said.

The selection of the 50 best samples

was the result of the statistical analysis
of the data.
He added the 50 bean samples are being
processed into chocolate and the next
step will be the sensory evaluation by
a large panel of 35 experts during the
month of September.
The selection of the International Cocoa
Awards (ICA) will therefore be made by
mid-October, Mr Khan said.
All 50 chocolate samples will be
celebrated at the Salon du Chocolat in
Paris from October 28 to November
1 where the Cocoa of Excellence
Programme will have a stand.

The chocolate will be available for

tasting and will also be distributed to all
the chocolate makers on the Salon and
many others after the event.
Mr Khan said they are excited at the
recognition after a year of operations in Fiji.
The awards will place Fijian cocoa on
the global map and alleviate the market
issues, he said.
We look forward to working closely
with our partners and their support to
revive the industry.
Cacao Fiji started in 2014 to process
high quality cocoa beans for export. It is
working with the Ministry of Agriculture
on establishing a network of cocoa farmers.

The sugar industry is facing a major

challenge after the buyers of Fiji sugar,
United Kingdom based Tate and Lyle
decided to cease buying fair trade sugar
from Fiji.
The Fiji Sugar Cane Growers Council
says this will directly affect some 13
thousand farmers in the country as they
will lose millions of dollars in fair trade
premiums every year.
It wasnt certainly the news cane farmers
were anticipating.
Cane farmers are projected to lose close to 9
million dollars every year once Tate and Lyle
Sugars cease to buy fair trade sugar from Fiji.
As far as Lautoka Cane Producers

Association is concerned, the first year we

have received 2.4 million dollars, second
year was 1.4 million dollars, and this year
was again 1.4 million. So basically we
would be losing about $2m per year, said
Network of Asia-Pacific Producers board
member, Praveen Singh.
Premiums earned from the sale of fair
trade sugar were used to develop farms
and assist the famers in cane planting.
Sugar Cane Growers Council Chief
executive Sundresh Chetty says efforts
are underway to ensure farmer do get
premiums from the sugar buyers.
In fact the Tate and Lyle were paying
our industry at the tune of about $60USD

per ton of sugar that they were able to

sell on fair-trade markets. I understand
the highest that we received for fair-trade
would have been around 70 thousand
tons of sugar, Fiji Sugar Growers
Council CEO, Sundresh Chetty said.
With European Unions preferential market
access also coming to an end in 2017, Chetty
says will have a significant dent on the industry.
Well what I understand is they have
said that their fair-trade markets have
dropped so that is the reason that they
are unable to buy fair-trade sugar from
Fiji. But moving forward, I dont think
this is just the end of the world. There
are many other options to be explored.

Key Player Behind Bainimarama Money

Making Excursion To Canada Named

Source- Fiji

The man believed to be responsible for

getting Frank Bainimarama to Canada is
Netani Gucake, who worked for the Fiji
Sun in the 80s and 90s.
Gucake is now working for the church
and the organisation Alpha International,
a Christian based group that donated a
container load of soup packets to the Fiji
Corrections Services recently.
Sources say Gucake is the prime mover
behind Bainimarama's week-long trip,
rallying business and community.
They also he roped in one Bobby Naicker,
who paid all flight and hotel expenses for
Bainimarama and wife, Mary.
Netani Gucake is understood to have
been behind the of recruiting of Fijian
students to attend a College in Canada,

with one source claiming he got a 'huge

cut from the College while charging
students consulting fees as well'.
Bainimarama will be attending at least
six to eight events in Canada, with tickets
ranging from $25 to $350 per person.
Last night local Canada time he attended
a dinner at the home of one Peter Raju,
where $250 tickets were the going rate.
The isa lei lunch at cost of $125 per
person in Surrey is to be held tonight
local time and people are paying $50 to
get in.
Tomorrow, during the day he is attending
an open air meeting where former Fijians
have been charged large sums to put up
tents and stalls.
Saturday afternoon and night has been
reserved for Fiji Muslims and the Muslim
supporters of Bainimarama led by one

to meet with him.
On Sunday Bainimarama will be
officially cutting the ribbon of a real
estate office and attending a luncheon
in a parking lot. The cost is $35 per
person.
Several readers have written to Coup
4.5 asking "So who is collecting all the
money and where are the profits going?"
The Fiji Sun has today run a story
saying Bainimarama has invited Fijians
in Canada to invest back home saying,
"You deserve the opportunities Fiji
now offers" and promising "peace and
prosperity."
The same story mentions Peter Raju
describing him as a Fijian businessman
from the Canadian Duty Free Distributors
in Richmond, BC.

THE FACT: Key Player Behind

Bainimarama Money Making Excursion To
Canada Named

I had the privilege of reading your article

in reference to Netani Gucake and The
Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama's visit to
Vancouver/Surrey British Columbia, Canada.
It is somewhat disturbing to read some
of the points made in your article.
As a publisher and editor of The Fiji Times
Canada I only publish substantiated articles.
For the record tickets were sold for
various events in the lower mainland of
BC which ranged from $25.00 and up to
the range of $250.

604.510.4088

The event hosted by Peter Raju did not

have any price tag for entry. The rumour
mill does indicate of events with a price
tag of $250 but none had been confirmed
by anyone that they had paid $250 to see
the Prime Minister Bainimarama.
As a publisher of the only Fijian news
paper in Canada, I am aware of most
of the social events in the Vancouver Surrey corridor.
The event at Mr. Peter Raju was free as
NO TICKETS WERE SOLD, IT WAS

info@fijitimescanada.com

PAID FOR BY THE RAJUS.

THE RAJUS HELD THIS PARTY TO
WELCOME THE PRIME MINISTER
AND HIS WIFE AND ONLY BY
INVITATION.
On a note Mr. Raju is a very successful
former Fijian businessman in Canada.
He is the President and the CEO of
Peace Arch Duty Free, the largest land
border duty free shop in North America.
He has in the past hosted The Premier Of BC,
The Prime Minister of Canada, ministers,
doctors, lawyers, judges and prominent
business entrepreneurs at no cost.
I suggest that prior to pointing fingers
and publishing articles without proof
makes your site an unreliable and
untrustworthy.
Netani Gucake was the man behind
getting the Prime Minister and his wife
to Canada. Bobby Naicker was another
person who worked with Gucake.
Sources have it that both charged
organizations sums of money for the prime
minister to visit business and events.
So for a shrewd businessman like Peter
Raju, paying to host PM Bainimarama was
a no- brainer, he did it out of respect for a
fellow Fijian, he was though asked to.
I hope this brings some clarity to the
story you published on your site.

Fiji, New Zealand Mutual Agreement On

Proper Protocols

The Fijian Government and New

Zealands Ministry of Primary Industries
(MPI) concluded with a mutual
agreement after their meeting in Nadi.
This follows after New Zealand had
suspended Fijian exported produce
earlier in the week.
The two parties came to an understanding
whereby proper protocols need to be
followed to ensure that the exporting
processes between the two countries are
handled smoothly.
The Attorney-General and Minister
for Public Enterprises Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum said the meeting found there
were some lines of communication from
MPI that were not following the proper
protocols.
We however had a very good meeting
and we hope that the suspension will be
lifted at the earliest.
We did also discuss our view that
the suspension was not necessarily
appropriate in this case for the fruits and
vegetables and an understanding was
achieved.
We appreciate Dr. Butchers presence
from the Wellington Office of MPI in
Fiji at short notice and demonstrates
goodwill on his part.
Such
goodwill
and
improved
communication is critical as both Fiji
and New Zealand export to each other ,
he said.
The Attorney-General was accompanied
by the recently returned from Canada
Minister for Industry Trade, and Tourism
Faiyaz Koya, Minister for Agriculture,
Rural Development and National
Disaster Management Inia Seruiratu and
Permanent Secretary for Industry Trade
and Tourism Shaheen Ali.
The Attorney-General and the team also
met separately with the Chair of Natures
Way Cooperative that has the monopoly
of providing the heat treatment service,
a requirement by New Zealand, to our
export produce.
Mr Sayed- Khaiyum said: There are
some service issues we have discussed
with Natures Way and also again
protocols that need to be followed.
They raised issues about their current
funding which they get from the fees
they charge to the exporters.
So we have had some discussions
and have asked them to make some
submissions on that.
He said that the country does not have
major problems with export facilities but
obviously there is room for improvement.

91Year Old Former Oral Surgeon Caught

At Sydney Airport Allegedly Carrying
4.5Kg Of Cocaine In Soap

Dr Victor Twartz (R), a retired oral surgeon, was detained after flying from India
to Australia
The arrest of a 91-year-old man into becoming drug mules.

cocaine at Sydney airport has prompted arrested at Sydney airport after flying
the Australian Federal Police to issue a from Delhi, India, to Australia.
warning about Australians being duped Twartz told the reporter that he met people

in Delhi who he had befriended online.

As he was about to board his plane to
return to Sydney, he was handed a bag
that he was told contained gifts for a
person in Australia.
In the bag was cocaine hidden in 27
packages of soap.
Twartz was charged with importing a
commercial quantity of cocaine and has
had his bail continued.
He will appear in court on October 6.
Twartz's arrest is the latest in a string of
arrests of older or vulnerable people who
have fallen for scams which have seen
them becoming unwitting drug mules.
AFP has warned Australians of scams
which can lead to people being duped by
overseas drug syndicates into becoming
drug couriers.
"Claiming

automatically mean you will not face
criminal charges," AFP Acting Assistant
Commissioner Wayne Buchhorn said.
"People can expect they will be charged
if they knowingly bring drugs into
Australia or are reckless or willfully

narcotics concealed inside their luggage
or items they are carrying."

Yashvant Patel From Chicago, Charged In

1.9 Million Dollar Fraud Scheme

Indian-American Yashvant Patel, 59,

former president of a construction
company has been arrested and charged
in a USD 1.9 million fraud scheme
in which he underpaid dozens of his
employees, some of whom were also
working illegally.
He has been charged with four counts
of mail fraud and four counts of making
false statements in documents required
to be kept under federal laws. The
indictment seeks forfeiture from Mr
Patel of USD 1.9 million.
While each count of mail fraud carries
a maximum sentence of 20 years in
prison and a USD 250,000 fine, each
count of making false statements carries
a maximum sentence of five years in
prison and a USD 250,000 fine.
Mr Patel, who was arrested last week

604.510.4088

near Chicago, paid less-than-union-scale

wages to dozens of employees, including
illegal aliens, in order to reduce the
employer contributions to benefit funds,
according to the indictment.
Mr Patel falsely reported that his
company My Baps and a sister firm,
Vijay Construction, owed approximately
USD 600,000 less to the benefit funds
and approximately USD 1.3 million
less to the companies employees
than what was required by collectivebargaining agreements with the union,
the indictment added.
From January 2009 to October
2010, Mr Patel controlled the daily
operations and finances of My Baps
and Vijay, both of which operated as
concrete and asphalt contractors in
Chicago.

info@fijitimescanada.com

He had authority over the bank accounts

of both the companies and approved
expenditures to outside entities, including
monthly payments to the benefit funds.
The benefit funds, in turn, provided
union members with pension, health and
training benefits.
The indictment charges that Mr Patel
under-reported approximately 33,000
hours of work performed by his
employees, some of whom were not
lawfully entitled to work in the US,
resulting in lower employer contributions
into the unions benefit funds.
Mr Patel paid many of these
workers in under-the-table cash
payments, at wages that were less
than what was required by the
collective-bargaining agreements,
the indictment said.

Mother Charged Over Deaths Of Three

Children

A 36-year-old woman has been charged

with the murder of her three children who
died when the car they were in plunged
into a lake in Melbourne's west in April.
Four-year-old twins Anger and Madit
Manyang and their one-year-old brother
Bol died when the car they were travelling
in veered off the road and into Lake
Gladman in Wyndham Vale on April 8.
Their five-year-old sister, Awel, survived
when nearby residents ran into the lake
and pulled her from the vehicle.
After a four-month investigation, police
arrested Akon Guode, who was behind
the wheel of a Toyota Kluger at the time.
She was charged with three counts of
murder and one of attempted murder.
Guode faced an out of session court
hearing and has been remanded in
custody to appear at the Melbourne
Magistrates' Court.
Following the deaths of the three children
there was an outpouring of grief from the
local Sudanese community.

Parents Quizzed After Child Of 3 Left At

Motorway Layby

A family on their way to the French

Riviera for their holidays left their
3-year-old daughter in a motorway layby
and drove more than 150km before
realising they had "forgotten" her.
They only twigged she was missing
when an alert was issued on French
radio, police said.
The child was found by other
holidaymakers in a rest area off the A7
"Autoroute du Soleil" (Highway of the
Sun) near Loriol in the Drome region
just after lunch local time.

All she could tell them was that she had

a brother and a sister and that she was
"going to the seaside" when she saw
"daddy's car pull away", a gendarme said.
It was only when they heard the alert
- 45 minutes after the child had been
found - that the parents called the police
and turned around to drive back up the
motorway.
"The family had passed Aix-en-Provence
[150km away] and were going towards
Saint-Raphael and none of them had
noticed she wasn't there," the officer

said.
The parents were being questioned at the
police station where the child was being
looked after.
"We are going to listen to what they
have to say and talk to the prosecutor
at Valence to see if this should be taken
further," the officer added.
Millions of French families take to the
roads during the annual August holiday
rush to the sea and mountains, putting
often unbearable strain on the motorway
system and their own nerves.

Two Indian-origin women have been

accused of stealing 155 razors worth USD
4,500 from a Walmart store in the US.
The theft was reported from a Walmart
store on the Joe B Jackson Parkway in
Murfreesboro city of Tennessee State.
The security footage showed two
women, carrying a six- or seven-year-old
child, stealing over USD 4,500 worth of
155 razors from the personal grooming

section inside the store.

After stealing the shaving razors, the
females left through the entrance on the
opposite side of Walmart with a child in

tow. They fled the area in a minivan, a

media report said.
They are yet to be identified and arrested,
the report said.

French Couple Who Died In Desert Gave

Son Extra Water, Sheriff Said

A French couple who died while hiking

in a New Mexico desert on a 100-degree
day may have kept their 9-year-old son
alive by giving him extra water rations,
Otero County Sheriff Benny House said.
Ornella Steiner, 51, and David Steiner,
42, of Bourgogne, France, were found
dead last week off a hiking trail in White
Sands National Monument, a vast and
treeless desert park about 226 miles
from Albuquerque.
Their son was found dehydrated, but
alive beside his father's body, House
said, apparently unaware his mother was
already dead.
Though the parents didn't carry enough
water for the hike, they gave the boy
more water than themselves, House said.
"The parents would take a drink and give
him two drinks," House told CNN affiliate
KVIA. "I'm sure that's a contributing
factor in how he fared so well."
Autopsies are not complete, but the
deaths appear to be heat-related, the
sheriff said.
Their deaths are highly unusual for the
National Park Service which operates
more than 408 sites around the country.
Between 2007 and 2014, there were
nearly 2.3 billion visitors to the sites,
according to NPS data. There were 1,025
fatalities in national parks from a variety
of causes between 2007 and 2013 (no
fatality data was given for 2014). The
most common -- 365 -- were drowning
deaths, followed by 210 car crashes. The
third leading cause of deaths during that
time frame were falls, numbering 178.
Between 2007 and 2013, 26 national

park site visitors died of heat-related

illness.
Water is critical
The boy's grandmother flew from
France to Albuquerque to care for him.
Authorities are not releasing his name.
"It was the perfect storm for this family.
They started off the trek with two
20-ounce bottles of water. When we
got there, there was no water left in the
bottles," House said. The park newsletter
advises hikers to carry 1 gallon (128
ounces) of water per person.
The Steiner family apparently traveled to
the 275-square-mile park, last Tuesday
to admire the otherworldly beauty of the
wave-like white dunes.
Temperatures topped 100 degrees that
day -- normal for early August, said
Marie Sauter, the park superintendent.
"There is no shade," she said. "There is no
cover. You are out exposed to the sun, the
wind the heat, the reflection of the sun off the
white sand. It's a harsh desert environment."
The family set out about noon on the Alkali
Flat Trail, a 4.6-mile loop marked only by
posts staked deep in the gypsum sand.
After walking about a mile, they left the
trail and either rolled down or fell down
the dune, House said. The sheriff said he's
doesn't know if that was accidental or not.
From what the boy told investigators, the
mother, who already wasn't feeling well,
aggravated a previous knee injury. She
headed back to the trailhead, but made
it only about 300 feet before collapsing,
House said.
Park service employees on patrol found
the mother dead around 5 p.m. Looking

at her camera, the deputy saw photos of

a man and boy at the park's entrance and
expanded the search.
Searchers found David Steiner about 45
minutes later. The boy was beside his
father's body.
"He wasn't crying," House said, but "he was
dehydrated and of course he was upset."
'Underestimated the desert'
After parting ways with Ornella Steiner,
David Steiner and his son apparently
continued walking for another 2,000
feet, still off the trail and unaware of the
mother's collapse, the sheriff said. Then
the father collapsed.
Through an interpreter, the boy described
his father as confused and having "lost
his bearings," the sheriff said. House
said it appears the father was disoriented
-- common symptoms of heat stroke,
according to the CDC.
His tongue was swollen and he repeatedly
told his son "the truck is right up there,"
though they were more than a mile into
the trail, the sheriff said.
The boy was taken to a hospital and French
consular officials were notified, House
said. But the boy didn't speak English, so
in the meantime the sheriff's office found
an interpreter -- the mother of a deputy's
girlfriend, who is fluent in French.
The Steiners' deaths were the third and
fourth at the park in the past 10 years, the
sheriff's office said.
The sheriff said he thinks the Steiners
weren't prepared for the heat and sun
they encountered.
"I just think they underestimated the
desert," he said.

Father Asks MPS To Return Favour With

Holiday Funds

A father of three has set up a crowdfunding campaign hoping federal

politicians will help fund his family
holiday to Uluru.
Stephen Callaghan decided to make the
invitation to MPs after being outraged to
learn some fly their children around the
country on the taxpayer.
"I think it was always in the back of our mind
that the politicians were abusing the system
by scheduling these iffy appointments just
so they could go to the footy, but I had no
idea they were carting around their family
at our expense," he said.

604.510.4088

Callaghan already had plans to drive his family

of five to Uluru when it emerged former
Education Minister Tony Burke charged
taxpayers A$12,000 for his family's 2012
business-class trip to the same destination.
"Dear Federal MPs ... I would appreciate it
greatly if you [donated] to my Go Fund Me
campaign so MY kids can go on a holiday
too," Callaghan posted at the weekend.
"I won't be accepting donations from
everyday Australians ... they have
already paid too much for YOUR kids
... all I ask is that, in the words of our
great Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, my

info@fijitimescanada.com

children get a "fair go".

"Dear Joe Hockey, do your kids have
some hotel soaps left over from their
$18k holiday they can send my kids?
They've never been in a hotel," he
tweeted to the Treasurer, who has been
implicated in the controversy.
Callaghan hasn't received any funds or
feedback from politicians, but has been
encouraged by the kindness of strangers,
with several hundred dollars already
donated towards the young family's trip.
Callaghan plans on passing on some of the
funds to children's charity, Stewart House.

The Epic Moment When Goddess Kali Took

Over The Empire State Building In New York

Goddess Kali is regarded as the Goddess

of death but the death of an ego. Of all
the forms of Devi, she is considered to
be the most compassionate one because
she provides moksha or liberation to her
children. And now, people in New York
would know about Her. Yeah, you read
that right.
Goddess Kali was displayed on to the
iconic Empire State building in New
York which is considered to be the
tallest building and also the key piece
of NYC skyline.
Empire State building had started a new
trend to feature extinct species across the
world. But, featuring Goddess Kali was a

class apart. Android Jones is the artist

who designed the portrait of Kali.
Why Goddess kali? Because She
represents the destruction of evil,
Android thought it would be a good idea
to feature Her. Hence, he opines that
She would work as the epitome to fight
dangers and pollution.
Recently, the much touted Cecil the lion
was also featured there. The death of this
lion by an American dentist had caused
international outrage. It was broadcast in
a picture more than 350 feet tall and 180
feet wide. Other than this, many animals
were featured to garner peoples attention
and subsequently, create awareness.

Why The Loonie's Decline

Could Mean A Landslide'
Against Harper

The Canadian dollar has been trading

near 11-year lows of around 76 or 77
cents U.S. over the past couple weeks,
and while that may seem to be a marginal
issue in the federal election, if history is
any indicator, it could be a very bad sign
for the governing Conservatives.
Why? Because the last two governments to
hold an election after a major drop in the loonie
were wiped out in landslides, Bloomberg
Business reports in an analysis of economic
data to watch ahead of the 2015 election.
They produced a chart showing the
change in the Canadian dollar's value
for the 12 months ahead of every federal
election in Canada since the loonie started
floating freely against other currencies in
1970. It showed that the largest declines
in the Canadian dollar before this
most recent decline preceded major
electoral routs in 1984 and 1993.
Bloomberg ran this chart titled The loonie
as predictor of landslides, which we
marked up to highlight the relevant bits.
In 1984, the Liberals under leader John
Turner got trounced in the federal election,
giving Brian Mulroneys Conservatives
the largest majority in Canadian history.
The loonie had fallen more than 7 per
cent in the year before the election.
In 1993, that Conservative government,
now headed by Kim Campbell, was
nearly wiped out of Parliament entirely
by the Liberals under Jean Chretien. The
loonie had fallen nearly 8 per cent in the

604.510.4088

12 months before that election.

And now we are headed into an election
in which the loonie is 17 per cent lower
than it was a year earlier the largest
one-year decline on record. If these
economic indicators are anything to go
by, the Harper government is headed for
a record-breaking rout.
But are they actually anything to go by, or
were these past landslides a coincidence?
Certainly very few voters make a
decision on who to vote for based on
the exchange rate. Research suggests
a falling currency is a good news/bad
news story. If youre a Canadian with
an investment portfolio your foreign
investments are worth more in loonie
terms, and you feel richer. But if youre
buying from abroad or travelling to a
foreign country, you feel poorer.
And news reports of a loonie that keeps
hitting new lows can have a negative
impact on the electorate, giving them the
impression of an unhealthy economy.
Canadas economy is certainly unhealthy
these days, though its a matter of debate
just how serious the health problems are.
The things that largely support the value of
the loonie particularly commodity prices
have been suffering, with the oil price
collapse just the most obvious element.
The oil, gas and mining sector was 7.3
per cent smaller in StatsCans GDP
report for June than it was a year earlier.
Manufacturing, which accounts for the

info@fijitimescanada.com

bulk of Canadas non-energy exports, was

2.3 per cent smaller than a year earlier.
And just today TD Economics released
its latest report on commodity prices,
showing another plunge in July. The
bank is now predicting its commodity
price index will hit its lowest point since
2009, when the world was in the grips
of a financial crisis, before starting to
bounce back later this year and next.
Weaker commodity prices almost always
mean a weaker loonie.
The Bank of Montreal said Monday that
prices for Canadian oil exports are also
at their lowest point since 2009.
"The Canadian economy was already hit hard
in the first half of 2015 by the initial huge drop
in oil prices. If the latest slide persists, there
would likely be downside risk to our GDP
forecast" for the second half of the year, BMO
economist Benjamin Reitzes wrote.
In this context, it seems more likely that
if the Harper government loses power
come October, it will have more to do
with the countrys shaky economic
situation than with the exchange rate that
is a symptom of the problem.

Control Blood Sugar Levels With Food

You can easily control your blood sugar

levels with the foods you eat.
Regulating blood sugar levels is essential
for good health, to maintain a healthy
weight and to lower the risk of diseases
such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
According to new research published in
the Public Library of Science Medical
Journal, people with high blood sugar
levels are also at an increased risk of
developing cancer.
Much of the food we eat is converted into
blood sugar, which is used by the body
for energy. Problems occur, however,

604.510.4088

when we have high or low blood sugar

levels.
Here are the best ways to maintain
healthy blood sugar levels.
Protein: One of the best ways to stabilise
blood sugar levels is by including highquality protein with each meal. The
best sources include lean red meat, fish,
chicken, eggs, legumes, nuts, seeds and
tofu.
Chromium: Chromium helps normalise
blood sugar levels and enhance insulin
production. Sources include broccoli,
wholegrain cereals, nuts, mushrooms

and soy beans.

Reducing
sugar:
Reduce
your
consumption of sugary processed foods
such as chocolates, cakes, biscuits,
sugary breakfast cereal and soft drinks.
These foods give a sharp rise in blood
sugar levels.
Fibre: Fibre helps to stabilise blood
sugar levels. It slows the absorption of
glucose from food, which reduces the
sharp rise in blood sugar levels. Best
sources include wholegrain breads and
cereals, brown rice, legumes, fruit and
vegetables.

Causes Of Pancreatitis
Pancreatitis is not a diagnosis most are
well aware of prior to ever developing
the ailment, as for some reason it isnt
publicized that often, even though it
should be. Pancreatitis can be fatal if not
treated quickly, and it can also be life
changing if yours is a chronic version
versus a one off acute episode. It occurs
when the pancreas is overworked trying
to breakdown all of your foods and
medications that you ingest. Think about
everything you consume, from pills to
cocktails, to fatty foods, all have to go
through the pancreas. It has a pretty big
job in the digestive cycle, and when it
isnt functioning as it should, it begins
to be attacked by its own enzymes
causing extreme pain and requiring
hospitalization in most cases.
Its reported that 7 out of every 10
patients develop the illness from alcohol
consumption, but there are other reasons
one can become ill from pancreatitis as
well. Review the causes of pancreatitis
and if you ever feel extreme stomach pain,
vomiting, and develop a fever please get
to your medical providers office at once.
1. Genetics
There are patients with pancreatitis that
simply developed it on a hereditary
basis. If your mother suffers from it,
there is a good chance you at some point
may as well. Fortunately, most know if
it is already common in their families
to catch it before it gets too problematic
and seek a specialist treatment plan early
in life.
2. Alcohol
You cant talk about the pancreas without

mentioning alcohol; the two simply go

hand in hand. Those drinks you pounded
in your 20s? They can come back to
haunt you at some point, so always drink
with caution and drink plenty of water to
avoid pancreas issues whilst consuming
cocktails of any sort.
3. Prior Surgeries
This isnt hugely popular as far as diagnoses
are concerned, but there are a number of
patients that have obtained the disorder as
a result of having a previous surgery. Often
these patients will only develop an acute
version of the illness versus the full blown
chronic episodes while their bodies are
healing from the surgery.
4. Poor Diet
You are what you eat, and your pancreas
will reflect that as you get older. The
more fatty foods you put into your body,
the more your pancreas has to work extra
hard to decompose them. Pancreatitis
can be controlled often by changing your
diet in just a matter of weeks.
5. Gallstones
Usually upon being diagnosed with
pancreatitis, your doctor will want
imaging tests completed to see if you
have gallstones that could be causing
your pancreatitis. Most patients with
pancreatitis have their gallbladders
removed as a precautionary measure to
avoid further attacks.
6. Medications
If you are someone that pops over the
counter meds like candy, be warned that
it could result in effecting your pancreas.
Prescription medications can also take
time for the pancreas to break down, so

always avoid taking medications as a last

resort to fixing your illnesses if possible.
7. Smoking
Smokers are prone to develop tons
of ailments including cancer, and
pancreatitis. If you combine smoking
with drinking and taking medications
you are essentially a ticking pancreatitis
time bomb. Cut back or totally stop
smoking as soon as possible to start
gaining better health.
8. Elevated Calcium
If your calcium levels are too high,
you could have a condition called
hypercalcemia which can also cause
pancreatitis. It can be as a result of a
parathyroid gland that is overactive.
Often, your medical provider has the
ability to run some tests and detect if this
is the case for your pancreas issues.
9. Drug Abuse
Not surprisingly, if you abuse street
drugs you will quickly deteriorate
your pancreas; among other organs.
Hopefully, your pancreatitis isnt too far
gone that you can make some changes
and start to feel better and get your life
back. The plus side of this version of
self-induced pancreatitis is that once the
patient avoids drugs their bodies begin
repairing themselves rather quickly.
10. Cystic Fibrosis
Those with cystic fibrosis are all too
familiar with their pancreas and the
dangers it can bring if its not healthy.
Many develop pancreatitis both the
acute and the chronic versions with
cystic fibrosis as a possible side
effect.

How To Discipline A Stubborn Child

Children tend to be stubborn during the
toddler and teenage years. Sometimes, it
is a part of their personalities that parents
are required to manage and in other cases
it is simply a way to test boundaries and
assert their own freedom to do something
or not do something. Teaching stubborn
children to express themselves and deal
with their stress in healthier ways is
important. Discipline a stubborn child
by remaining calm, listening to and
understanding the child and setting a
good example of acceptable behavior.
Steps
1. Observing a Stubborn Child
2. Stay calm. When you respond to
stubbornness with anger or yelling, you
are reinforcing the child's belief that
negative behaviors work.
3. Watch how your child is acting. He
may be refusing to do something or will
continue doing something after you have
told him not to.
Determine what is making the child
uncomfortable or resistant. Child
development experts believe children
become stubborn when they are stressed
or tense and they do not know a socially
acceptable way to express those feelings.
4. Remove the child from the situation.
This might be a public place, where you
child is refusing to observe rules or the

dinner table, where she is not using

proper manners or is refusing to eat.
Give your child time to calm down. Once
she is removed from the situation that
brought on the stubborn behavior, you
will have an opportunity to understand
the real problem.
5. Listen to your child. Sometimes,
instead of tricks or strategies, you just
need to communicate.
Remember that one cause of stubborn
behavior can be that the child desires
more attention from his parent. Give
your child the time he needs to talk
to you about what might be causing
problems or anxieties.
6. Discipline with patience and
affection. Children need to feel safe and
loved, even when they are in trouble.

During this period, teens spend much of

the day outside the home at school
or at after-school activities or jobs and
with peers. But it's important to try to
talk with your teen every day to share
opinions, ideas, and information.
Here are a few tips to help you
communicate with your teen:
Make time during the day or evening to
hear about your teen's activities; be sure
that he or she knows you are actively
interested and listening carefully.
Remember to talk with your teen, not at
him or her.
Ask questions that go beyond "yes" or
"no" answers to prompt more developed
conversation.
Take advantage of time during car trips
or standing in line at the supermarket to
talk with your teen.
Provide activities that offer opportunities
to improve communication skills, such
as attending or engaging in sporting
and school events, playing games, and
talking about current events.
Vocabulary and Communication

Teens essentially communicate as adults,

with increasing maturity throughout high
school. They comprehend abstract language,
such as idioms, figurative language, and
metaphors. Explanations may become
more figurative and less literal.
Teens should be able to process texts and
abstract meaning, relate word meanings
and contexts, understand punctuation,
and form complex syntactic structures.
However, communication is more than
the use and understanding of words; it also
includes how teens think of themselves,
their peers, and authority figures.
As teens seek independence from family
and establish their own identity, they begin
thinking abstractly and become concerned
with moral issues. All of this shapes the
way they think and communicate.
If You Suspect a Problem
You should have ongoing communication
with your teen's teachers about overall
language skills and progress. If the
teachers suspect a language-based learning
disability, comprehensive testing will
be necessary. This can include a hearing

Create a peaceful environment at home.

If there is a lot of yelling, arguing or
threatening, a child will adapt to it and
become more stubborn.
Behave the way you expect your children
to behave. You need to be a role model.
If your child sees you being stubborn,
she will act the same way because it
works for you.
7. Make positive behavior a privilege.
For a child who refuses to do chores, try
something like "would you like to help
me put the laundry in?" Or, "if you are a
good listener today, I will let you set the
table for dinner."
8. Demonstrate reward. Instead of saying
"you cannot ride your bike until you put
on a helmet" try "as soon as you put on
your helmet, you get to ride your bike."
9. Provide options out of stubborn
behavior. If your child refuses to go to
bed, instead of fighting it, offer several
different options and your child can
choose one.
Set the scene for cooperation. Instead of
announcing it is bedtime, say "It's 8:00.
Do you want to read a book first, sing a
song or have a cuddle?" This alerts the
child to the fact that it is bedtime while
offering enjoyable things to do as he gets
there.

test, psycho-educational assessment

(standardized testing to assess learning
style as well as cognitive processes), and
speech-language evaluation.
A teen with a specific communication
difficulty, such as persistent stuttering, should
be referred to the school speech-language
pathologist (an expert who evaluates and
treats speech and language disorders).
Persistent stuttering and vocal-quality
problems such as hoarseness, breathiness,
or raspiness may require a medical
evaluation by an otolaryngologist (an
ear, nose, and throat specialist).
But in most cases, language difficulties
will have been identified before this age.
However, increasing academic troubles
might indicate subtle problems.
Parents often feel that the teen years
are a time of difficult communication,
when it's normal for teens to challenge
parents and resist authority. However,
severe disruption in the household isn't
considered normal. If you feel that your
relationship is particularly difficult,
discuss it with your doctor.

Low Calorie Foods That Actually Keep You

Full

Its hard to diet, period. One of the issues

with dieting is finding a way to actually
feel full as we usually end up eating 1/4
or half of our usual meal. Luckily, there
are plenty of food out there that can keep
you full and are actually low-calorie?
Without further delay below are some
low calorie foods that will actually keep
you feeling full for hours on end. Easy on
the calories and easy on your waistline,
so you really dont have to worry. Get
ready!
1. Baked Potatoes
Contrary to the popular belief that you
should give up on potatoes because they
are loaded with carbs, these babies are
actually quite good at filling you up for
hours after eating them. Bake them or
broil them, they are very much loaded
with vitamins, fibre, and minerals to
keep you full and energized until your
next meal.
2. Eggs
The popular breakfast food, and we can
see why. No matter how its cooked,
whether sunny side up, scrambled,
poached, hard boiled or soft boiled, eggs
contain protein, meaning they have all
the essential amino acids that our bodies
crave.
People who eat eggs for breakfast
everyday eat 330 calories less later on
in their next meals. If you want to feel
a little fuller, dont take out the yolks!
Half the protein are in those little yellow
globs of goodness.
3. Oatmeal
This fibre packed food can also keep
you full for longer. Being a 100% whole
grain, the fibre in oatmeal balances your
blood sugar levels and lowers your
cholesterol.
Cook your whole grain oats in milk if
you really want to feel satiated. Add
your favourite berries, nuts or fruits, or
even some cocoa powder on top of your
oatmeal to add to the tasty factor as well
as the fibre. There is nothing better than
a tasty and fulfilling bowl of oatmeal to
hit the spot.
4. Black Bean Soup
Soup, soup, a tasty soup, soup is better
tune to sing to rather than beans, beans,
the musical fruit, right? Right! Because
its soup, the water content is high, and
thus you end up feeling full after a cup
or two, and naturally it has very few
calories.
The beans in black bean soup have a high
content of fibre and are loaded with good

604.510.4088

starch its starch that can slow down

the release of sugar into the bloodstream
so you can really feel the fullness after
eating. Skip the crackers or the bread
that you normally enjoy with your soup
and instead ask for another cup, if you
want to feel even more satisfied. After
all, beans are full of slow carbs and can
provide plenty of nutrients and minerals
that your body needs to run effectively
5. Broccoli
You may not have liked eating this when
you were a kid, but we can tell you that
this vegetable will fill up for a fraction
of the calories in a full meal. What
makes this even better is that a full cup
of broccoli contains only 25 calories,
they need 80 calories to digest in the
body, so youve basically burned off
about 55 calories just by eating broccoli.
Awesome, right?
If you still dont like your broccoli,
cauliflower makes a great alternative
too, as it can also keep you full and they
can be a good substitute for those carbpacked meals. Veggies that burn calories
should be enough reason to eat them,
right? Hopefully so.
6. Greek Yogurt
Dairy protein packed products can
actually help reduce your appetite as
well as balance out your blood sugar
and what better way to get some dairy
then by eating a couple of scoops of tasty
greek yogurt?
Greek yogurt actually has less sugar than
the regular ones you see in supermarkets,
but they contain double the protein, so
you know they will leave you feeling
full and completely satisfied. Top your
yogurt with some of your favourite
berries or healthy cereals to make it more
delicious and fibre rich. You can even
add some honey, for a little sweetness in
every spoonful.
7. Apples

Yeah, you read it right. Apples. An apple

a day keeps the doctor away, as they say.
An apple a day also keeps the hunger
pangs away for hours on end. Apples
contain a protein that slows down
digestion and aids in making you feel
full.
Whole apples often take a while to eat
and as such your body eventually tells
you that youre not hungry anymore.
You can eat as many apples as you want
to, as they are low in calories but will
provide you with plenty of energy to get
you through the rest of your busy day.
8. Smoothies
Smoothies are the perfect meal
replacement. They will easily keep you
full and energized in between meals
and they often have plenty of nutrients
and mineral that help keep your body
running smoothly.
As well, smoothies are blended with
air, so that means downing a glass can
keep you full for longer, given that
your smoothie is not loaded with those
sugary sweeteners that are packed full of
calories. If you want to feel even fuller,
try blending ice and add a little non-fat
milk or yogurt with some low fruit that
is packed with fibre and antioxidants
bottoms up!
9. Popcorn
A classic snack for the movie goers,
popcorn is a low calorie snack that can
keep you feeling full for hours. Popcorn
is a low energy density kind of food, plus
it is also packed with fibre, which helps
keep us feeling satisfied.
Eating about three cups of popcorn can
make you feel full and provided that
youre not piling on the butter and salt,
the delicious snack will remain healthy
and only contain a few calories. A way to
make your popcorn even more satisfying
is by adding a little bit of spice. A
teaspoon of red pepper will do the trick.

Salman Khan To Play A Villain In Kick 2

The actor will be playing an out-and-out negative role in Kick 2.

Salman Khans done it all on screen,

except playing a villain. With his next,
Kick 2, he does that, too.
I would love playing a villain someday.
But it has to be a great role. It should
excite me, he had told us during an
interview last month. Now, his wish
seems to have come true. How? A source
reveals, Salman has announced that he
will be playing a double role in Kick 2.
What is not known is that one character is
a positive one, while the other is an outand-out villain. Thats the idea. Whos
the brainchild behind it? Salman, of
course, our source tells us.
Salman has found the story fascinating
and is excited about playing both hero
and villain. He will be fighting himself in
the film and thats a very cool idea, adds
our source.

Many Hindu religious organisations are

lot of organisations had protested against
Salman Khans Bajrangi Bhaijaan and
last year, Aamir Khans PK too had

New comedy show "Comedy Superstar"

is gearing up to air on SAB TV which
has an interesting set of judges led
by Bengali beauty Sushmita Sen and
includes Shekhar Suman and Sonu Sood.
The show is all set to be launched
on August 22 and will be telecast on
Saturdays and Sundays at 10 p.m.
The show's tagline says "Hum Khojenge
India Ka No.1 Entertainer" and offers a
platform to aspiring standup comedians
to showcase their entertaining skills.
Speaking at a press conference to promote
the show, Sushmita said: "We've been

given the name - mind, body and soul. So

no prizes for guessing, I'm the soul."
She pointed to Sonu as the body
obviously for his macho physique and
Shekhar as mind for his wit.
"There was one reason for doing the show,
the first reason- whenever people watch
television or films or when they read
newspapers, all the news are extremely
negative and depressing. Very rarely do
you get an opportunity to make people
happy and feel them laughing, even if it is
in their living rooms," she said.
All the three have initials 'SS'. All the

three of them also have association with

comedy and hence apt as judges.
Shekhar Suman is particularly known
for his comic timing having judged
numerous comedy shows over the years,
particularly the one which identified
talents like Kapil Sharma and Raju
Shrivastav, who are renowned comedians
today. Sushmita too has displayed her
comic talent in "Main Hoon Na" and
"Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya" among others.
Sonu recently tickled viewers' funny
bone as a hearing-impaired person in
"Happy New Year".

Suva Claims IDC

By Asuad Ali
Suva left it late to claim the Inter District
Championship with a 1-0 victory over
Nadi at Newton Athletic Park in Surrey.
Nicholas Naidu fired the winner barely
two minutes away from the end of the
game.
The two sides' however, struggled to
break each other down and despite
relentless probing; it all came to the
second half free kick from the top of
Nadi's 18 meter box. It was no second
guessing who would be called to the
throne.
Naidu with his trademark delicious 'bent
it like David Beckham' free-kick scored
the winner.
There were plenty of half-chances, with
perhaps the most presentable coming
to Javid Khan on a fine Junior Evans
penetrating pass but Suva goalkeeper
Selvin Munian averted the danger.
The courageous save turned into a
counter attack and had it not been for
Wasim Khan, Nadi goalkeeper Suva
would have taken the lead.
Khan parried on a scorcher hit from
Rocket Ismail which had the direction
for the net.
Suva coach Chandar Dip Singh was
evidently over the moon when he
approached Sportsone at the farewell
ceremony for the Fijian Prime Minister
Voreqe Bainimarama on Sunday.
Im very happy, he said. It was sweet
victory.
Singh said Nadi had been a dominant
team for good 7 years with equally
quality players and to beat them feels so
good.

The final match was played at high tempo,

with both the teams giving their all.
My players played very well and I
salute them for the effort.
Nadi coach Ivor Evans said his team
played great football and it all came

down to one goal.

You win some and you lose some. Im
happy for Suva who has tasted victory
after a long time, he said.
Nasinu won the Master division
championship 4-3 in shootout.

by Asuad Ali
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama
believes there needs to be changes in Fiji
Football.
Speaking to SUNsports in Canada
Bainimarama gave his comments on
the direction soccer is heading in the
country.
Fiji Under-23 made history yet the
national mens team is not doing well,
he said.
On a question if there needs to be changes
with the FFA, the PM says I think so,.
Fiji is ranked 198th in the FIFA ranking
below Samoa who ranks 197, Vanuatu
sits in 196 and Solomon Islands in 191.

Flying Fijians
An upbeat, cheerful Prime Minister then
talked of his World Cup Rugby Dream for
the Flying Fijians starting next month.
We will beat hosts England, Australia,
Wales and Uruguay in Pool A, he said.
Then we will go on to obliterate teams
to win it all.
Fiji has great bunch of players and the
coaching staff to pull the victory.
Fiji and Tonga have leapfrogged Samoa in
the international rugby rankings following
the conclusion of the Pacific Nations Cup.
The Flying Fijians have moved up one
place to ninth after beating Manu Samoa
in last weeks final.

Tongas three-match winning streak to

end the tournament has also seen them
jump from 12th into the top ten, with
Samoa slipping back two places to 11th.
Bainimarama told SUNsports that the
country will be behind the players as
they have always been.
The Pacific Nations Cup support
in Vancouver was huge and I as the
president of FRU thank fans for rooting
for their former country men.
When asked if he had asked for RWC
funding from private and business sector
while in Canada, PM said he didnt.
No, it didnt cross my mind. I should have
said something, he said with a smirk.
