evolved during the Portuguese
colonization and bears definite
traces of the European Christian
Miracle Plays.

VENUE
In the past, the
Chavittunatakom was
performed on open stages,
though sometimes the
interior of a church was also
a venue.

Duffmuttu is a group
performance popular among the
Muslims of Malabar.It is staged
as a social event during festivals
and nuptial ceremonies.
Kakkarissi Natakam is a satirical
dance-drama based on the
puranic legends of Lord Siva

TIME

Duffmuttu can be
performed at any time
of the day and has no
fixed time limit.

Kathakali

Evolved from other performing


arts like Kutiyattam,
Krishnanattam and
Kalaripayattu.

Presented in the temple


precincts after dusk falls.
Kerala Kalamandalam

Koothu

koothu is a socio-religious art


performed , either
independently or as part of
Kutiyattam.

performed in the
Koothambalam or the
Koothuthara of temples.

Krishnanattom

A spectacle for both the scholar


and the simple rustic. orchestral
accompaniments are Maddalam,
Ilathalam and Chengila.

Kutiyattam

This is the earliest classical


dramatic art form of Kerala.

Mohiniyattam

A distinctive classical dance form


of Kerala

The traditional
performance lasts for
eight days
Kutiyattam is enacted inside
the temple theatre, there
are two or more characters
onstage at the same time.

The Kutiyattam
performance lasts for
several days ranging
from 6 to 20 days.

Ritual Art

Oppana

A dance form essential to the


wedding entertainment and

The dance is a celebration of


marital fidelity and the female

Thullal

Thullal is a solo performance


combining the dance and
recitation of stories in verse.

Paana

Oppana is often presented


as a stage item today.

Thiruvathira day in the
month of Dhanu (DecJan).
Today, it has become a
popular dance form for
all seasons.

dance form is usually
presented solo or in
pairs.
The Kalamezhuthu is a
forty-day ritualistic
festival beginning with
the first of Vrischikam
(Scorpio)

Mudiyettu is a ritual dance


performed in some Kaali
temples of Ernakulam and
Kottayam districts
Paanakali, the art form is popular
in the districts of Thrissur,
Palakkad and Malappuram.

A canopy (pandal) is
supported by 64 posts of
cut out from the Paala tree.

Paana is part of a three


day festival, performed
during the night, the
ritual lasts for about
three hours.

Martial Art

Patayani

Patayani is a week-long ritual


dance, held in Kaali temples on
the banks of the Pamba river

Held during the months


of Meenam and Medam
(March - April)

Poothanumthirayum

Poothanumthirayum is a ritual
offering to Goddess Kaali is
performed in many places of
South Malabar.

The dance is performed


from house to house and on
the premises of village
shrines

Between November and


May every year.

Theeyattu

Theeyattu is a solo dance-drama


performed in front of the Kalam

It is enacted in some
Bhagavathy temples of
Thiruvalla, Kottayam,
Thripunithura and
neighbouring areas.

Theeyattu is still a ritual


offering made every
Friday at the Kaavu
temple

Theyyam

Theyyam also known as


Kaliyattam, it is a ritual dance
popular in north Kerala

north Malabar places where


Theyyams are performed
annually from December to
April.

At the Parassinikadavu
Sri Muthappan Temple
in Kannur, Theyyam is
performed on all days.

Tholppavakkoothu

Tholppavakkoothuis a ritual art


performed during the annual
festivals in the Kaali temples of
Palakkad district.

The shadow play is


presented in the
'Koothumadam', a specially
constructed oblong play
house on the temple
premises.

Kalaripayattu

Kalaripayattu the martial art


form of Kerala is regarded as the
oldest and most scientific of its
kind in the world.

Velakali

This spectacular martial dance is


performed by men in some of
the temples of southern Kerala.

The dance form is a regular


feature of the annual
festivities at the
Ambalappuzha Sree Krishna
temple in Alappuzha
district.

Folk Art

Kannyarkali

Kannyarkali is a folk art mostly


practised by the Nair community
of the Palakkad area.

Kolkali

Kolkali is a highly rhythmic folk


art performed in the north
Malabar region of Kerala.

Kummattikkali

Kummattikkali is a mask dance


popular in some of the northern
districts of Kerala.

Margomkali

Margomkali is a ritual folk art of


the Syrian Christians of Kottayam
and Thrissur districts.

Held in temples as well as in


places called the "Thara', a
venue for informal
gatherings

Today, Margomkali is only


performed as a stage item
by women.
