Roosevelt Modernization
Update
by Joe Maloney
On Wednesday night February 26,
officials from the Department of
General Services and representatives
of Perkins Eastman, the design firm
leading the renovation of Roosevelt
High School, provided an update on
the modernization of the property.
Among many exciting developments
to the High School, DGS and Perkins
Eastman are pursuing several sus-
tainable and environmentally friendly
elements to the design and construc-
tion, such as geothermal technologies
and the reuse of storm water. You can
view details of the modernization by
going to DGSs website at http://dgs.
dc.gov/page/roosevelt-high-school.
Neighborhood Safety
by Rickey Williams, Jr.
Protect yourself and your belongings

carjacking and robberies.
A final way in which the PSC has helped
the community be safer is the produc-
tion of a Safety Tips sheet. This sheet
summarizes the best advice from local
authorities like the Metropolitan Police
Department (MPD) in how residents can
avoid becoming a victim of crime. It also
gives information in how to anonymously
contact MPD via text and contact infor-
mation for key area MPD officials. PSC
members distributed copies of the Safety
Tips sheet along Georgia Avenue, NW to
various businesses from New Hampshire
Avenue, NW to Upshur Street in late
December. The PSC members are also
planning more distributions in 2014.
Right now there are positions open on
the PSC from other SMDs currently not
represented. The committee needs vol-
unteers from the following SMDs: 4C01,
4C02, 4C03, 4C05, 4C06 AND 4C07.
If you would like to volunteer to help
distribute flyers and write CIS for your
SMDs crimes, please feel free to contact
Commissioner Rickey Williams, Jr. at
rickeywilliams78@gmail.com or 202-290-
7600.
Communications & Grants
by Jeff Standish & Joseph Vaughn
As one of the active 4C subcommittees
that has been meeting monthly, we have
been discussing various ways to enhance
the distribution of community information
both throughout 4C and within individual
SMDs.
We are pleased to announce a new offer-
ing by ANC 4C that will be launched as
of this March Newsletter - a Spanish
language newsletter. With the help of a
local resident that is bilingual, the newslet-
ter you are reading will be translated into
Spanish and 500 copies will be printed.
The communications committee is hope-
ful that this step forward in engaging our
latino neighbors and community members
will lead to more fluid communication
across 4C.
In addition, the committee is in the pro-
cess of making the majority of the ANC 4C
community grants that were awarded over
the past few years, visible on our website.
Please stay tuned for an announcement of
when they will be posted and available.

ANC 4C
Committees
Public Safety
by Rickey Williams, Jr.
The goal of Public Safety Committee (PSC) is to help
find ways of securing the safety of the ANC 4C residents.
Since its inception the PSC, chaired by Commissioner
Rickey Williams, Jr. (4C04), has taken many actions to
help combat crime in our ANC.
The first step taken by the PSC was to begin tackling
and following violent crimes that have taken place within
ANC4C. By focusing on crimes that occurred within a
PSC members single member district (SMD), the com-
mittee has been able to identify various crimes in differ-
ent SMDs. This leads to a sharing of information with
neighbors in helping others be more alert to actions that
may leave individuals and/or property in harms way.
The second step used to help combat crime has been
writing and submitting of Community Impact Statements
(CIS). A CIS is a written statement from area residents
describing how crimes have affected them and the neigh-
borhood. These statements once voted on by the full
ANC are then sent to the United States Attorneys Office
(USAO) where they are presented to the judge after a
defendant has been found guilty of a crime or entered
into a plea agreement. These impact statements usu-
ally has the effect of increasing penalties on the criminal,
which hopefully leads to a reduction in others committing
said crime. As of the writing of this article, four CIS have
been presented to the ANC, approved unanimously and
sent to the USAO where they were used to against per-
MPD:
As reported recently at our 4C Community Meeting and
the CBENA February meeting, auto break-ins are on
the rise in our community. From the MPD webpage ...
The best way to prevent theft from your auto is to
always keep valuables outta sight. Never leave
cell phones, briefcases, suitcases, or small elec-
tronic devices (smart phones, tablets, GPS, etc.)
in your car in plain view. Take these items with
you, or secure them all the time, every time!
If your car has a trunk, use it. Put valuables in
there or in a locked glove compartment. Hiding
items under seats is better than leaving them in
plain view, but securing them inside the glove
compartment or trunk is a far better deterrent.
During the holiday season especially, or any
time youre shopping, place packages in
the trunk, not on the passenger seats or floors.
Also, keep your car doors and win-
dows locked all the time!
DC Taxicab Commission:
If you loose something while in a taxicab or leave
it sitting on the seat, there is a number to call in
order to retrieve the item(s). Call (855) 484-4966
24 hours a day/7 days a week and press 2 to inquire
about items lost in a DC taxi. When leaving a mes-
sage please provide contact information in the US.
DDOE:
Within the DDOE homepage carousel is a tool/website
that allows you to investigate the solar potential of your
home, business, or dwelling. It is a really cool tool that
had me occupied for nearly an hour. If you are consider-
ing solar electricity generation or just want to see what sort
of potential your home has to generate electricity from the
sun, check out http://en.mapdwell.com/dc#
