Tere once was a time when families spent the evening gathered happily around a warm fame, not
a television. Te Windsor Arch evokes this era, providing timeless beauty and bold craftsmanship.
As Victorian castings accompany polished chrome highlights, fames within radiate steady, even
heat for many years to come. Unique in design and function, the Windsor Arch combines modern
technology with a subtle hint of distinction and elegance from a time once forgotten.

the most successful period-inspired baths are not slav-
ish reproductions. Start with the basics: three plumbed,
ceramic fixtures; a tile or linoleum floor; a medicine cabi-
net; a washable wainscot of varnished wood or tile. By
all means, interpret and update to create a room both
functional and beautiful. Rooms that have a personal vi-
sionand of course good craftsmanship and materials
are the rooms that will age gracefully.
White fixtures have always been most common (and
least expensive). Bathrooms inspired by those of the early
20th century are a good choice for most old houses, lend-
ing an indeterminate timelessness. These common bath-
rooms are of course perfectly appropriate for bungalows,
Arts & Crafts houses, and Tudor, Colonial, or Romantic
Revivals. Owners of 19th-century houses will find it easy
to incorporate Victorian-period details: wainscot or tile,
electrified gaslight-era fixtures, and freestanding or an-
tique furniture.

storage) to a bath in a 1913 building, remod-
eled by David Heide Design Studio.

when it comes to handmade tiles, were approaching a
true art form. Perhaps thats why tiles old and new have
become collectibles. These works of art and craftsman-
ship can enhance everyday places like the kitchen backs-
plash, shower walls, and fireplace surround.
Choices include glossy tiles in every color pal-
ette (with or without special effects like crackle glazes
or aged patinas); matte, slip-glazed tiles in diverse and
earthy field colors; and decorative (or deco) relief tiles
that depict a motif. Revival tiles include De Morgan and
Low style Victorian tiles, accurate reproductions of Arts
& Crafts-era Batchelder tiles, boldly colored Moorish
Revival deco tiles, and cuerda seca and tube-lined tiles.

TIME-TESTED DESIGN,
NOT FADS
.xn nvcov.1ixc .nvicv sou c.x vv.iis usv
In the midst of gut-wrenching renovation, I planned my someday kitchen, imagined
the period-style bathroom I would add, the leather chairs and wicker porch swing and
Morris fabrics I would buy. Period design became my passion, which I share with you
in the pages of Old-House Interiors. Theres nothing stuffy about decorating history,
nothing to limit you. On the contrary, its artful, quirky, bursting with ideas I
couldnt dream up on my most creative day. Armed with knowledge about the
period and style of your house, youll create a personal interior that will stand the
test of time . . . an approach far superior to the fad-conscious advice given in
other magazines. Join me. I promise you something different!

visit most furniture showrooms, and youre on your
own to figure out what will best complement your house.
In the pages that follow, however, youll find manufac-
turers and craftspeople attuned to period design. Re-
member, though, that while Renaissance Revival furni-
ture will always look good in an Italianate parlor, style is
just one starting point. Develop an eye, look at interior
design books, ask for help, have a planthen buy what
you love, one piece at a time.
The small goods of the past offer extraordi-
nary aesthetic and practical value, meeting the admoni-
tion of the artistcraftsman, which was eloquently stated
by William Morris: Have nothing in your house which
you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.
Whether your house is historic or part of a revival, take a
long view when selecting finishing touches that authen-
ticate a roomthe plein-air painting, the gilded picture
frame, the brilliant glass. Dont settle for mass-produced
and anonymous things in your house. Live instead with
fewer objects of unique beauty.

curtai ns to carpets
although late victorian rooms are heavily layered,
textiles do not have to be excessive to be effective. The
homespun, damasks, and quilts of early American interi-
ors added color and comfort without fussiness. Similarly,
the Arts & Crafts movement of the early 20th century re-
lied on appliqued pillows, embroidered window curtains
and portires (or interior doorway curtains), stenciled
table scarves, and plush carpets for softness and color. In
all periods, drapery has been the most significant use of
fabric, but you can get an appropriate look without ex-
travagance.
Curtains and carpets, pillows and fringe add
softness, comfort, and texture. They muffle sound. They
round out a dominant color scheme or introduce spots
of accent and contrast. They suggest a style or period by
virtue of their design, color, volume, material, and trim-
mings. A house without textiles is just architecture, not
yet furnished.

even when decorators of the past specified white,
whether for kitchen cabinets or a Colonial Revival hall,
they didnt mean white the way we do today. They may
have been referring to such off-whites as ivory, bone, soft
gray, or buttercreameven soft pink or tan. The true
colors of the 18th century included brilliant yellow, Prus-
sian blue and turquoise, clear green, blood red, plus black
and tinted ivories. By the 1870s the tripartite treatment
had walls divided into dado (or wainscot) below the chair
rail, a fill or field section, and a frieze at the top. Raised-
panel wainscots and plaster created three-dimensional
ornaments. The Arts & Crafts period is often described
as a reaction against Victorian excessbut, by modern
standards, these interiors were still highly decorated. In
living and dining rooms, a frieze finished the wall over
a high wainscot. Colors were earthier yet included gold,
grass green, and eggplant, with pastels in the bedrooms.

Mechanical systems dont generally fall within the scope of a decorating book.
Some systems, thoughinvisible air conditioning or pretty heat registersoffer
practical or aesthetic advantages peculiar to old houses, and are described here.
your house will guide you. Look at existing elements for
clues to style. Sometimes there is more than one theme;
for example, a predominantly Arts & Crafts house may
have Colonial Revival woodwork in the dining room. Go
ahead and honor the original intention, but pick a domi-
nant theme when adding major elements. When you
stick with a single architectural style, everything you add
will look as though its always been there. Decorating
and furnishing are ephemeral and can be more personal,
eclectic, or mixed.
Nowadays, you can get anything you want. In-
deed, this Sourcebook could be subtitled Elements of
Style, Available for Purchase. The pages that follow
treat you to a sampling of those permanent fixtures that
are key to style. Included, too, are garden details that
round out the impression. For authenticity, consider us-
ing the occasional part salvaged from a house of similar
vintage.
