howtomovefromtheorytopractice,thetruevalueofEAworkwillnotbeachieved.

3.DefinedBodyofKnowledgeMethod
InordertoadvancetheEAprofession,abodyofknowledgemustbedefinedandthemethods
taughtinthecertificationprogrammustusethisasareferencepoint.Ifadefinedbodyof
knowledgeisutilized,EAresultswillbeconsistentandcanbeverifiedagainstthistoensure
success.Ofcourse,thisbodyofknowledgewillgrowovertime,andthecertificationprograms
theoreticalandpracticingknowledgebasewillneedtobeupdated,asnewunderstandingsare
discovered,practiced,andverified.
4.PractitionerBased
TheCertifyingorganizationshouldbecomprisedofpractitionersEnterpriseArchitectswho
haveactuallypracticedandcontinuetopracticeEnterpriseArchitecture.Theinstructor(s)and
advisoryBoardofDirectorsshouldbeEnterpriseArchitectsthemselves,practicingthesame
bodyofknowledgeandmethodologiestaughtinthecertificationprogram.Thepracticing
EnterpriseArchitectsunderstandingswillbebalancedwiththeneedfortheoreticalsoundness,
andwillmaintainthatunderstanding.
5.DemonstrateCompetency
Thecertificationprogramshouldnotjustbeaseriesoflectures.Furthermore,theattendees
shouldnotjusttakeatestorbeinterviewedbyexpertstoshowcompetency.Thecurriculum
shouldencourageattendeestopracticethetheories,andmethodologiesbeingtaught,and
presentopportunitiesforanalysisofdemonstratedworkinaWorkshopenvironment.Thereis
nothinglikehavingtoactuallydosomethinginfrontofotherstofocusyourattention!
EnterpriseArchitectureisfoundedoncommunicatingwithawidearrayofpeopleinbusiness
andITroles,amongstmanyothercharacteristics,andEnterpriseArchitectureskillsneedtobe
demonstrated.Foradvancedcertification,demonstrationofadditionalenterprisearchitecture
workproductsisnecessarytoillustrateproficiency.Thiscompetencyalsoneedstobere
certifiedonaperiodbasis,asisthepracticewithmostprofessionsandprofessional
organizations.
6.Instructors
InstructorsmustbepractitionersofEnterpriseArchitecturethemselves,wellversedinboththe
theoryandpracticeofEnterpriseArchitecture.Whentheyarenotteaching,theyshouldbe
practicingthesamebodyofknowledgebeingtaughtinthecertificationprogram.Agood
instructorneedstobalancetheirtimeintheclassroomwithtimedoingactualEnterprise
Architectureactivitieswithintheirenterpriseorcliententerprises.Theyarethenableto
provideapositivelearningexperience,createanopenforumforknowledgesharing,andare
abletosharepersonalprojectexperienceswiththeattendees.Preferably,instructorshaveat
least10yearsofexperiencepracticingEnterpriseArchitecture,andatleast25client/enterprise
engagements.

ArchitecturemethodologytaughtatthecertificationprogramshouldenabletheEnterprise
Architecttoprovidetheirbusinessorclientwithananswertothealltoofamiliarquestion
whatamIsupposedtodoMondaymorning?!!Simplyhandingtheclientaleatherbound
bookwithonethousandpagesoftext,oraseriesofmodels,willnotallowthemtomove
forward.AppropriatelycertifiedEnterpriseArchitectswillbeabletodeliveraprioritized
businessalignedroadmapasetofactionsorinitiativestoproceedfromthearchitecture
descriptors.
9.RenewalofCertification
Mostprofessionalcertificationsarelimitedintime.Apersonscertificationmeansnothingif
theylasttimetheypracticedinthefieldwasyearsago.Similartootherprofessions,Enterprise
Architecturecertificationshouldbeconsistentwiththisconcept.Additionally,astheCertified
EnterpriseArchitectcompletesarchitectureprojectsanddemonstratescontinuedpracticein
thefield,theirhardworkandaccomplishmentsshouldberecognizedthroughdifferentlevelsof
certification.Advancedcertifications,basedonthenumberofactualsuccessfulEnterprise
Architectureengagements,isonemeasureofmeetingadvancedcertificationrequirements.
10.VendorNeutral
Thecertifyingorganizationshouldnotacceptfundingorsupportfromoutsidesourcessuchas
softwareorservicevendors.Whilesoftwareorservicevendorsareencouragedtoattend
certificationprogramsandarewelcome,thisneutralityisnecessarytoensureallEnterprise
Architectsarepracticingfromthesamebodyofknowledgewithoutbiasoroutsideinfluence.
