Yachtmaster Passages and Skipper Training


7 weeks Introduction Yachtmaster Passages and Skipper Training includes mile-building, skippered passages, yacht handling, seamanship training, racing and offshore navigation. This is a great sailing adventure, a challenging team-building experience - and a lot of fun, too. The course is designed as a second module to follow our STCW 95 Pro Yacht Crew Training. It provides the training you need before joining our Yachtmaster Prep and Exam, or Yachtmaster Ocean Theory and Passage. RYA/YA Dinghy Sailing Skills and Drills.


5 days. Course introduction and outcome This is a fantastic week sailing on Sydney harbour in a variety of training dinghies. The course is suitable for beginners as well as experienced dinghy sailors. The aim is to develop raw sailing skills and seat of the pants wind awareness. which can be translated easily on to yachts. By the end of the week beginners can expect to achieve a standard equivalent to RYA level 2 whilst competent dinghy sailors will refresh their seamanship and racing skills. Pre-requisites None Qualifications RYA/YA Start Dinghy Sailing/Basic Skills Course programme Monday Start Sailing and Basic Skills Intro/brief, points of sailing, rigging Tacking land drills. Course work, follow the leader etc. Sailing to windward No go zone 5 Essentials, Sailing downwind Gybing zone Practical sailing exercises and capsize recovery.

Tuesday Start Sailing and Basic Skills Intro/brief, Recap 5 essentials/ how a sail works. Apparent wind (If in doubt let it out!) Rigging. Gybing land drills. Practical sailing exercises/coursework Wednesday Basic Seamanship skills MOB, lee shore/weather shore landings and departures Pick up mooring, coming alongside, reefing Practical sailing exercises Thursday Introduction to racing and spinnakers Basic racing rules/ Top tips for speed Dinghy racing exercises. Skills and Drills and Qualifying Passages week


5 days Course introduction and outcomes This course includes three days skills and drills in an around Sydney Harbour and a short overnight passage along the New South Wales coast. If you are doing part 2 in the UK the week will be spent in the Solent and English Channel. The aim of this week is to develop your seamanship, pilotage, and boat handling skills. You can also expect to achieve one or more Yachtmaster qualifying passages. Qualifications Logged miles and qualifying passages. Course content Passage planning and prep Passage planning and passage making. Preparation for day sailing (safety checks and briefings) Pilotage and navigation Pilotage exercises by day and night. Introduction to blind navigation Offshore navigation exercises by day and night. Use of Electronic and conventional navigation tools. Logkeeping and position fixing offshore. Safety and seamanship drills Heavy weather drills (storm sails). Man overboard drills as skipper. Evacuation drills. Boat handling and sail handling Efficient helming and trimming. Reefing, and changing headsail. Rigging and use of downwind preventer. Poling out the headsail offshore. Mooring and berthing Hove to at sea. Anchoring. Mooring buoys under power and sail. Alongside marina berthing and un-berthing Securing the vessel alongside using appropriate lines and fendering.

RYA/YA Yachtmaster Shorebased Theory Week


5 days Course introduction and outcome The course includes coastal and offshore navigation, tidal theory and meteorology, stability and IRPCS. Upon completion of this course you will have covered all the supporting theory required to skipper a yacht safely on coastal passages by day and night. Pre-requisites RYA/YA Dayskipper theory or equivalent level of knowledge. Qualifications awarded RYA/YA Yachtmaster theory certificate The next step RYA/YA Coastal Skipper practical course Course programme Monday 1000 -1200 Course introduction. Explanation of RYA/YA/MCA qualifications and training schemes. International and national maritime authorities. STCW95, Australian state authorities. 1215-1300 Charts, projections, symbols, lat & long, chart corrections, chart datum, describing and fixing position, sources of position line, three point fix. Exercises 1400-1515 Direction & compass, variation & deviation, causes and correction. Swinging for deviation. 1545-1700 IRPCS + exercises. (All students will require a thorough knowledge of the IRPCS) Tuesday 1000-1115 Pilotage- IALA buoyage lighthouses and sectored lights. Leading and clearing lines, dipping distances, and pilotage plans. Exercises 1145-1300 Tides- causes, springs and neaps, tide tables, tidal streams, Chart datum and heights datum, LAT, tidal range, height of tide. Standard ports, twelfths rule. Exercises 1400-1515 Tidal height exercises standard ports. 1545-1700 Tidal heights exercises-secondary ports.

Wednesday 1000-1115 Recap secondary ports + exercises. 1145-1300 Tidal stream calculations, tidal diamonds/atlas, computation of rates table, DRs & EPs. 1400-1515 EPs and Leeway + exercises 1545-1700 Course to steer and ETA + exercises Thursday 1000-1115 Meteorology General circulation, passage of a frontal depression, terms used in forecasts, synoptic charts. 1145-1300 Meteorology- fog, sea breeze, and local effects + exercises 1400-1515 Anchoring- Types of anchor, choice of anchorage, scope. Stability, righting moment curve, AVS, effect of loading, recreational craft directive. 1545-1700 IRPCS Exam Friday 1000-1115 Safety and distress. (mayday, evacuation, rescue). RYA/YA Coastal Skipper Practical Week


5 days Course introduction and outcomes This is a live aboard course on one of our Beneteau 40.7 training yachts. The week will be broken into short coastal passages north or south along the NSW coast or around the tropical Whitsunday islands for those training in the Australian winter. If you are training in the UK you will sail from Cowes and can expect to visit France and the Channel Islands subject to weather conditions. You will be involved in all aspects of passage planning, boat handling and passage making. You will be asked to take charge of the boat and the crew on a short coastal passage. Your instructor will help you understand the details of the course at the course briefing. By the end of the week you will have achieved the RYA/YA Coastal Skipper Practical course certificate. Pre-requisites RYA/YA Dayskipper Skipper practical or equivalent experience. (15 days sea time) RYA/YA Yachtmaster Shorebased Theory (recommended) Qualifications RYA/YA Coastal Skipper. Yachtmaster Qualifying Passages. Yachtmaster Milebuilder and Qualifying Passages


12 days Course introduction and outcome This course aims to develop yacht handling and navigation skills offshore and to provide the opportunity for crew to gain sea miles and offshore qualifying passages in preparation for assessment for the RYA/YA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence. You will conduct longer passages by day and night allowing you to fully experience working in a watch system on board. Pre requisites RYA/YA Dayskipper Skipper Practical or equivalent experience RYA Yachtmaster Shorebased theory (recommended) Qualifications awarded RYA/MCA Yachtmaster offshore qualifying passages. The next step Yachtmaster/Master of Yachts Part 3 (Yachtmaster Offshore) Course content Passage planning and victualling Preparation for sea (safety checks and briefings) Pilotage, coastal and offshore navigation. RYA/YA National Powerboat Certificate Level 2


2 days Course introduction and outcome The RYA National Powerboat Certificate Level 2 is the benchmark qualification for driving small powerboats and RIBs (Rigid Inflatable Boats). It is important for anyone planning to work professionally in the superyacht industry as they will be required to drive the tenders and support craft on board the yacht. The course includes safe handling techniques, close quarter handling, man over board recovery, coming alongside, mooring and anchoring. Sydney Harbour provides an ideal training ground with busy challenging waterways in which to develop your power boating skills. If you are completeing YM/MOY part 2 in the UK you will do the powerboat course either on the Solent or at our centre in Vassiliki Greece. Pre-requisites None Qualifications awarded RYA National Powerboat Certificate level 2 YA National Powerboat Certificate if required. NSW Maritime Authority powerboat license. Powerboat drivers in New South Wales are legally required to hold a power boat license. Introduction to Spinnakers and Race Tactics.


2 days Course introduction and outcome This course is based on one of our Beneteau 40.7 race-tuned yachts on beautiful Sydney harbour. You learn about race crew roles, spinnaker packing, hoisting, trimming, gybing, dropping and broach recovery. You will practice bear away sets, and letter box drops, to name a few techniques. We try to make sure everyone gains some familiarity with all the roles on a race crew. By the end of the course you will be able to take an active role on a race yacht in a variety of positions. Pre-requisites We recommend you have completed RYA/YA Competent Crew or have equivalent experience. The next step Your new found spinnaker handling skills and knowledge of race techniques will help you get race crew positions both inshore and offshore. With a little offshore experience you will be ready to join Flying Fish for Cowes Week, Hamilton Island Race week or even the prestigious Sydney to Hobart race.
