1. The following is an extract from the logbook of a boat leaving the anchorage marked to
the east of S. Shaun Island after a family BBQ, to return to Sweetwater (45°43'.00N
006°12'.10W).
1727 010° 8.1 13.3 SE2 1004 DR position. Cape S. Vincent lighthouse
abeam to starboard
Plot the DR positions.
a) At 1135 the time, position and log reading are recorded in the logbook. The
position is 45° 38'.40N 006° 24'.50W.
3. A yacht has left Hamilton needing to return to its home port urgently.
a) At 0750 the GPS position is 45° 38'.20N 006° 15'.00W. The log reading is 4.1.
c) The tidal stream is 174°T 0.8 knots for the first hour and 182°T 1.6 knots for the
second hour.

11. d) What is the speed over the ground (SOG) of the yacht?

4. On Saturday 5th October at 1043 an angling boat leaving Sweetwater is 0.6 miles due
north of the Cape S. Vincent Lighthouse. The skipper has asked the helmsman to steer
270°M.

5. On Saturday 31st August a motor cruiser on passage to Hamilton has put the centre of
the compass rose into the GPS as a waypoint to plot positions quickly.
a) At 1415 the GPS gives the direction and distance to the waypoint as 192°(T) 3.8
miles. Plot the 1415 fix.
