Barbara Hargreaves takes the reins

From the Director:

As I quickly approach the completion of my first month as the Executive Director of the HSEC, I have come to many conclusions thus far.

Special points of interest:

First, no two days are the same. The staff at the shelter are second to none. They truly are passionate about animals and go above and beyond in their call to daily duty. My Board of Directors are not resume building Board members, but roll up their sleeves and do what needs to get done. Thats heartwarming in itself.

Girl Scouts Make the Shelter a Beautiful Place

Huron Girl Scout Troop #213 has been hard at work helping the shelter look spruced up for the summer. Theyve been weeding and working on the landscaping around the shelter. Theyve also been working on murals to help decorate the walls, and organized a food drive for our shelter animals. Were very grateful for all their help and we hope youll come out to the shelter to check out what theyve done.

The Older Cats

Our shelter currently has some older cats who have chronic upper respiratory problems. These cats dont look sick and dont act sick, but they may get sneezy under times of stress. They are free to a good home where they can be the only cat in the home. The adoption counselor at the shelter can tell you more but they can make wonderful pets in the right home. In fact, you may never even notice that they have an issue in a s t re ss - f re e environment!

Trap Neuter Return and the Vacuum Effect

Removing feral cat populations does not solve the problem of feral cats. The population rebounds through a scientifically recognized process known as the vacuum effect. Trap-Neuter-Return program in 2009 in an attempt to help local agencies deal with feral cats. It started as a pilot program and has grown with time and experience. The HSEC is looking to continue growing the program and has started working with the Erie County Health Department to expand the program and reduce the waiting period.
