Prerequisite Knowledge: What a compound word is and a basic understanding of words Approximate Time: 45 Minutes Student Objectives/Student Outcomes: The students will demonstrate an understanding what a compound word is. The students will create a paragraph using compound words that they create. Content Standards: CC.1.L.4 Vocabulary Acquisition and Use: Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiplemeaning words and phrases based on grade 1 reading and content, choosing flexibly from an array of strategies. Materials/Resources/Technology: Plastic eggs with parts of compound words written on them. Graphic organizer of compound words Writing and drawing page Implementation: Time 1 Minutes

Opening of lesson: (Objectives, hook, behavior expectations) I will call the students to the carpet by groups. I will make a dramatic production out of putting on a backpack, grabbing my lunchbox, basketball, and tube of toothpaste. I will ask them what they think I am doing. Then I will ask them is there anything similar about the things I have. I expect that they will figure out that all four of those things are compound words. Procedures: Then I will begin a review of compound words. I will mention that we have been studying these all week and that 10 of their 12 spelling words are compound words. I will ask the students to raise their hands to tell me what a compound word is. I expect that they will say that a compound word is a word that is a combination of two words. Then I will ask them to give me a few examples of compound words. They will have lots of great idea. I will pick one and write it on the board. I will make sure to point out that you do not put a space between the two words. I have noticed that they have been having trouble with this recently.

Then I will begin explaining what we are doing for todays lesson. I will begin by showing them the plastic eggs that I made. each half of the eggs has a part of a compound word. I will explain that I will be putting some eggs at each table. They are to combine the different parts of the eggs to make compound words. When they make a word, they should write it down on the chart that I will be giving them. I will explain that the chart (which is similar to a t-chart which we talked about on Wednesday) is for them to write down the words that they come up with in certain categories. I will give an example and show where I would write down the word on the chart. Then I will release them to their desks and they will begin working. I expect that this will take about 10 minutes. I will walk around and help students. When the students finish, I will tell them to go to the carpet with their chart. Then I will explain that they are now going to make a page to be part of a book that is similar to our Heat Wave book. I will tell them that our story will be about first grade. They need to write at least one sentence that has at least one compound word in it. If they want to use more than one compound word or write more than one sentence, that is great. They should also draw a picture. I will give them time to work. During this time, I will walk around and help students who are struggling. Summary/Closing: When they are finished, I will ask the students to bring the pages to the carpet and we will share a few of them. I will make sure that the students have used the compound words correctly. Student Assessment: I will be looking to see if the students have used the compound words correctly.
