Reflection Paper Social Media Carlos Rivera The comprehension of the term Social Media encompasses a considerable vast

t number of potential connections between different groups of population worldwide that fosters a facilitated communication between the advocates. If we want to understand a deeper meaning of this concept, we should also analyze its applications and the roles they play in society. On this paper, I will analyze social media as a concept and its applications by deriving some of the fundamental elements of reasoning using the Socratic Method of Reasoning. Then, I will describe the advantages and challenges that may arise given a multiple scenarios of applied social media. Finally, I will summarize these formulations and provide some questions needed to be considered before utilizing social media as a way of communication. Social Media presented by Dr. Repp can be thought as a way of democratizing information where everyone is an author/writer which can freely express his own ideas publicly. But what are the implications of promoting and encouraging inexperienced and potentially biased individuals to express their ideas? To what extend is this a negative issue to foster and rely upon? Merely, the consequences can be numerous and may start an uproar in several groups in society. On the other hand, facilitating communication can also foster creativity, information gradients, and expression of personal opinions of a general public. Thus, depending on the severity of the matter; social media regulators need to weight the positive and negative factors in order to promote a healthy standard for the well-being of society. Another element that rises debatable questions about social media is its interpretation by the potential spectators. While the example of Stacy S. illustrates the way of how images can be interpreted differently and cause collateral damage there are numerous examples of this distortion in perception, especially given by social networks such as facebook: The Sun recently published the
results of one researcher who found, in a database of 5,000 divorce filings,

989 instances of the

term Facebook.

(19.78%) Thus, users should consider the different perspectives and interpretations

given their spectators thus minimizing the probabilities of collateral consequences. The last element I will discern is the purpose of social media. As stated above, social media seeks to facilitate communication by democratizing information in society, but we should ask ourselves what are the extent of this purpose? Will it last forever and will be ever-evolving? Will there be a point where humanity's need for social interaction will reach a saturation point and a new approach will be adopted? Evolutionist theorists argue that it was a social interaction of our human ancestors that lead them to survive by mutually cooperating each other. The Cro-Magnon specie coexisted with Neanderthal around 30,000 to 50,000 years ago but the Neanderthals became extinct even though they had a more developed brain. Scientists hypothesize that Cro-Magnon species had a more effective way of interacting socially which lead to the survival of the specie. Thus, the question we should answer is how evolutionary fitted are people with more effective social skills compared to those who are not? Is this a matter of survival and/or bigger priority than objective knowledge? Are we advocating a more subjective generation of individuals instead of fostering objective reasoning? And more importantly: Is there a common denominator in human's perception of ethics and morality? If so, we should strive to create a systematically qualified environment that will enhance human interactions for the well being of society.
