I. OBJECTIVES

1. Knowledge:

- By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to remember meaning and form of some phrasal verbs

- Deal with word building; looking for clues; multiple-choice cloze

2. Competences

a. General competences

- Form and/ or improve such competences as group work, independent working pair work, linguistic competence, and cooperate learning.

b. Specific competences

- Identify the rules of how to deal with word building; looking for clues; multiple-choice cloze

3. Personal qualities:

- Ss have a positive attitude towards what they have learnt; understand and actively respond to relevant matters or situations.

Game: TIC TAC TOE - Listen to teacher.

- Divide the class into 2 teams.


- Play the game in groups.

- Draw a 3*3 tic tac toe grid and write the infinitive of an

irregular verb in each square. - Write down the name of the lesson in notebook

- Tell Ss to take turns and choose a square. Ss need to say the

past form of the verb. If the answer is correct, place an X or O

in the square depending on the team. If it is wrong, the square

stays in play.

- The team which connects three Xs or Os in a row – either

horizontally, vertically or diagonally, wins the game.

=> Lead – in: Today, we are going to learn about “Past simple

vs Past continuous” tense.

Activity 2: Match the sentences with the uses of the

past continuous tense.

- Show a sentence “Lin prepared lunch when the phone rang”.

Ask Ss to find the mistake in the sentence and correct it.

- Elicit the form and uses of ‘past continuous’ and by asking

students to complete the matching each sentence with the

uses.

- Ask Ss to name some stative verbs, then review some

commonly used stative verbs (think, understand, believe, like, Suggested answers: 1B 2C 3A

love, hate, prefer, want, appear, be, feel, hear, look, see, seem,

smell, taste).

- Give an example “I didn’t understand a word he said” - “I

wasn’t understanding a word he said” and ask Ss to choose the

correct sentence. Ask Ss to make a sentence using past tense

on their own “They … (love) your cake”.
