I. Background Information

Have you ever used facebook? Twitter? Google? What did you find in these websites?
Have you participated in an online survey in any of these websites? Were you asked to answer
some questions about a particular topic? What topic are you most interested in? Find out in
this lesson.

Words for study

Study the meaning of each word below.

1. Online – connected to the internet.


2. Survey – an examination of a topic/issue/event.
3. Online Users – people who have access and use of the internet for specific purposes.
4. Response – answer or reply.
5. Respondent – person replying to a questionnaire
What is an online survey?
Online survey is a study that aims to gather data to get the particular view, belief,
or opinion of a group of respondents about a specific issue or topic. This survey is conducted
through the internet using a particular website.
This is a made and self-administered survey since you are the one who
formulated the survey question/item, hence made your own survey form, posted it on the
website of your choice, collected or gathered the answer (or data) from your respondents, and
upon gathering the data, tabulated them.
By gathering and tabulating the data or answers of your respondents on the
survey questions, you can come up with your findings and arrive at a conclusion about them.
Some interesting topics you may cover in an online survey which readers find
interesting are:
1. Hobbies or interests of users based on age/gender/schooling
2. Comments/Reactions toward a product/good/service
3. Food preferences of respondents based on on age/gender/schooling
4. Market research such as product preference
5. Music preferences of teenagers

Online Survey Tools:


1. Facebook – This is a website that is used to contact friends, relatives, and
acquaintances around the globe. It is also used to keep track of friends and relatives
you have not communicated with for a long time. People across all ages, genders,
professions o occupations, cultures, and socio-economic status can have access to this
website and can easily learn how to use it. You can post one or two questions about
any topic of interest and you get responses in terms of likes. You can also share
opinions and reactions, and convey ideas on certain topics.
2. Yahoo – This is a website that contains updates of news around the world. From any
event to any celebrity, you can find it at Yahoo!. It is also used in checking and sending
emails.

3. Google – This is the most common website that is used in searching a web. It is used
by everyone. It is a helpful online tools as it can provide a wide range of information
about places, things, people, events, food, and many others.

4. Twitter – This website is used to keep track of your favorite celebrities and their daily
activities or happenings. It is used to promote events about charities, contests, the
Olympics foundations, etc. It also features trending topics to which the followers express
ideas and opinions. Twitter is mostly used by young people nowadays.

5. YouTube – In this website, you can find videos about various topics such as cooking,
reviews on movies, and the like. YouTube provide DIY ( Do-It-Yourself) videos that are
helpful for everyone. YouTube provides entertainment as well as information through
videos.
6. SurveyMonkey – This is a free online survey tool. It is the most popular online survey
tool and it is very easy to use. Its free version includes 10 questions, 100 respondents,
15 questions types, and choice of light theme.

7. SurveyGizmo – It is a great free survey platform even with its free version. Here are
free version features: Its unlimited survey questions, free templates, and basic
reporting.

8. Kwik Surveys - It allows you to create Kwik Surveys online surveys, quizzes and polls
for free and unlimited. It requires a sign up.

9. Obsurvey - This is a powerful and free online surveys made easy * survey maker that
helps you create a survey, polls and questionnaires with ease. It requires a sign up.
Advantages of Using Online Tools:

1. Faster - The distribution is quick and response time is faster. The information in online
surveys is being gathered automatically so you don't have to wait for the questionnaire
anymore.
2. More accurate - Online surveys cut down on errors since the questionnaire is being
programmed and responses are stored automatically for easier analysis.
3. Cheaper - You can save money on overhead like paper, printing, postage, data processing
and others.
4. Easier to analyze - The results are available immediately for analysis. Some tools present
data in graphs or tables and even provide analysis tools.
5. Easier to use - Online survey tools can be easier to manage even for kids like you. The
design and layout of the questionnaire can be customized according to your own style.
It can be developed in minutes. Respondents of online surveys can answer the
questionnaire at their own convenience. The results are readily available which could be
transferred to another software for a more detailed analysis by the researchers.

Disadvantages of Using Online Tools:

1. Inability to reach other samples - The respondents of this method are only those who
have Internet access.
2. Survey Fraud - Some participate on the survey for the sake of getting the incentive. Also,
there is no way of checking whether the survey is completed by the right respondent.
3. Absence of Interviewer - The respondent has nobody to ask for explanations to questions
that are difficult to understand. So, the respondent may feel demotivated to complete
the survey.

PERFORMANCE TASK 1
Getting Started
Creating forms in Google Forms is as easy as creating a document in a word
processing tool. You can even connect it to a spreadsheet in Google Sheets which
automatically records responses.

There are two ways in creating an online survey form in Google Forms. You can create:
1. from Google Drive, or
2. from Google Sheets.

Make sure you have signed in into your Google account already before you get started.

If you want to stop and continue doing your survey form later, just close the page and
you can always come back to your drive and edit your survey form. All you need to do is right-
click the thumbnail of the form in your drive, hover over Open with, and click GoogleForms.

PERFORMANCE TASK 2
● • Creating an online survey form in Google Sheets
1. In your drive, Click New in the top left, and choose Google Sheets.
2. In Google Sheets, click the Insert menu and select Form. A message will display at
the top of the page notifying you that a new form has been created.
3. Click Add questions here to begin editing your form, or Dismiss to get rid of this
message and continue editing your spreadsheet.

PERFORMNCE TASK 3
Processing Online Survey Data
Once the survey form is sent to the respondents, all you need to do is wait and monitor
for the responses. You are able to view the responses in three different ways: as a summary of
responses, in a separate spreadsheet, or as a downloaded CSV.

Viewing the summary of responses


To check the number of users who filled out a form and what their responses are, do the
following:
1. Click the Responses menu.
2. Select Summary of responses.

To use a spreadsheet with responses to your form, do the following:
1. Click the View responses button in the toolbar. The dialog box that will appear lets
you choose between creating a new spreadsheet or creating a new sheet in an existing
spreadsheet.

2. Select New spreadsheet.


3. Click Create button.
Viewing responses as a downloaded CSV

To download a CSV file of all the responses, do the following:


1. Click the File menu.
2. Select Download as.
3. Click Comma Separated Values.

From there, you can use the Excel features to analyze the responses from your survey.

Managing responses
In a survey, we usually want each respondents to submit responses only once. If you
want to keep it this way, check the box next to Only allow one response per person in the
Form Settings section at the top of the form.
