NETWORK TECHNICIAN

GENERAL PURPOSE

Under general supervision, perform skilled technical work in administering, planning,


installing, repairing, maintaining, and upgrading a variety of LANs and WANs throughout
the District; provide technical support to District administrators and staff; and perform other
related duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that
may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them
from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the class.

1. Perform skilled technical work in administering, planning, installing, repairing,


maintaining, and upgrading of various LAN and WAN servers throughout the
District.

2. Install, configure, and maintain complex, multi-vendor hardware and software in a


networked and non-networked environment; evaluate, test, and approve curriculum
software.

3. Reconfigure and upgrade software as appropriate; perform hardware assembly,


installation, configuration, maintenance, and repair of microcomputers, servers,
LANs, and related equipment.

4. Assist the TIS staff with troubleshooting Wide Area Network problems involving
routing, communications, and network operating systems, printing and LAN/WAN
management, and other applications.

5. Participate in the development and implementation of strategies for enhancement


of voice and/or data communications including upgrades to network hardware and
software.

6. Maintain current knowledge of technologies for possible implementation within the


District.

7. Prepare and maintain appropriate network systems and user documentation;


research and recommend network solutions consistent with District technology
goals.

8. Install and repair various computers and peripheral equipment including network
printers, stand alone printers, and personal computers; install lines and cabling into
buildings through walls, attics, and crawl spaces.

9. Train District staff on various software applications, including Internet Web


browsers, Microsoft Office applications, and Window operating systems.

10. Enter work performed on web based job log; respond to user requests for
assistance; serve as technical resource to users, providing technical information
and assistance.

11. Assist with installation and administration of various systems including document
imaging, cold storage, and inventory tracking systems; assist with special projects.

12. Evaluate and purchase equipment/hardware necessary for warranty and in-house
support; maintain equipment records and instructional documentation.

13. Document and inventory curriculum hardware and software; maintain an inventory
database of all District network equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES

Knowledge of:

LAN and WAN administration and related software; data communications systems and
related software; Microsoft operating system and Office applications; computer
hardware and software operations and maintenance; principles of computer
networking, internet, and wireless networks; antivirus, antispam, and adware filtering
software; advanced DOS commands; TCP/IP protocols; purchasing procedures and
requirements; record-keeping and inventory techniques and practices; software
copyright laws.

Ability to:

Operate a computer and peripheral equipment; operate, setup, and service servers,
desktops, and laptops; configure and hardware and software; understand and apply
software license laws; organize, schedule, and complete projects within agreed upon
timelines; follow established standards and procedures; provide technical support and
troubleshoot to minimize downtime; advise and plan for server equipment replacement
and test networked curriculum software; train users in application software; read
reports, code, technical manuals and documentation, contracts, correspondence, and
other records; exercise judgment within areas of assigned responsibility; establish and
maintain effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the
work; understand and follow written and oral instructions; communicate effectively
orally and in writing; prepare clear, concise and accurate reports, correspondence and
other written materials; interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.

Education/Training/Experience:

A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is
graduation from high school or a G.E.D equivalent, supplemented by college level
coursework in computer science, management information systems, or computer
certified training; three years of increasingly responsible experience in information
systems administration; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses/Certificates/Special Requirements:

A valid Class C California driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under
the District’s Vehicle Insurance Policy.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands
to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and
arms. The employee is required to frequently sit and occasionally walk and stand to
access work areas and files; stoop, kneel, or crouch to access or install, repair, and
relocate cabling; lift and carry records, documents and equipment typically weighing up
to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the
ability to adjust focus.

Mental Demands

While performing the duties of this class, the employee must be able to use written and
oral communication skills; read and interpret data, information and documents;
interpret policies and procedures; use math and mathematical reasoning; learn and
apply new information or new skills; work under deadlines with constant interruptions;
and interact with District staff, vendors, and the general public.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Employees work under typical office conditions, and the noise level is usually quiet or
moderately quiet.
