Preface
The success of the first edition of the book “Green Synthetic Approaches for
Biologically Relevant Heterocycles” coupled with the fact that the field of
green chemistry is rapidly progressing made the editor tempted for planning
a new revised second edition to upgrade the book accordingly. To accommo-
date huge contents in diverse areas of green chemistry directed syntheses of
heterocycles, the second edition of the book has been framed as a set of two
volumes—Volume 1 dealing with the “Advanced Synthetic Techniques,”
while Volume 2 focuses on the recent advancement on “Green Solvent
Systems and Catalysts.” This two-volume set is an endeavor to focus on the
recent cutting-edge research advances in the field of applications of innova-
tive green techniques in synthesizing a wide variety of functionalized bioac-
tive heterocycles of potential interest, to integrate advances in green
chemistry research into industrial applications and process developments.
Each volume consists of a total of 16 chapters contributed by eminent
researchers from several countries in response to my invitation. In addition
to the new groups of authors, a good number of contributors from the first
edition of the book also participated in this revised edition. I am most grate-
ful to all the contributors for their generous and timely response despite their
busy and tight schedules with academics, research, and other responsibilities.
Heterocyclic chemistry is a branch of chemistry that primarily deals with
the synthesis, properties, and applications of heterocycles. This spectacular
class of organic compounds is significant because of their inherent biological
activity and their applications in diverse fields, reflected by the fact that het-
erocycles constitute more than half of known organic compounds. Although
heterocyclic compounds find a wide range of applications they are of partic-
ular interest in medicinal chemistry, which has catalyzed the discovery and
development of much heterocyclic chemistry and methods. However, we
should remind that these compounds are far from being just the result of
some synthetic research efforts! Nature abounds in heterocyclic compounds
with profound importance in biological processes; for example, vitamins,
coenzymes, hormones, porphyrins, DNA, RNA, and many others bear vary-
ing heterocyclic scaffolds in their molecules. Amazingly, the entire carbohy-
drate chemistry is based on heterocyclic frameworks! Heterocycles are
ubiquitous not only in plant-derived natural products such as alkaloids, flavo-
noids, coumarins, anthocyanins, and so on but also in complex heterocyclic
