INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The influence of the financial status of grade 11 students on academic

performance shows the financial status on secondary school can initiate a
negative influence on academic performance for students (Destin and
Svoboda (2018). Prior studies linking high college cost and student’s loans to
academic outcomes have not been grounded within relevant social theory
regarding how and when the financial status of grade 11 impairs students’
cognitive functioning, especially when it creates and identify conflict or
perceived barrier in reaching students’ desired financial success in the future.
While education is a key to upward mobility, low-income students are
substantially advantaged peers. Prior higher education success, but few
studies consider the role of family support after students enter secondry
education.

Due to lack of resources, many students’ struggles to reach the same

academic achievement levels of students who lives in the poverty line. The
factors affecting student achievement includes income, source of income and
the parent’s educational level. Social economic status, it redeems much part
of the financial stats acquire from the income that will use in paying school
fees, it depends on what kind of work and how many members of the family.
Although many poor student’s below average on assessment measures,
instructional techniques and strategies implemented in the classroom, school,
district, and government levels can help takes the achievement gap by
providing students’ with necessary assistance in order to cultivate high
performances in academics (Dumaran, Guirit, Heramil, and Zamora 2015).

Financial status can determine first if it is suits for the best course,
there’s still gap between a regular employee and non-regular employee
because even though both of them can support their child for its chosen
course, the parent who had a regular work can support easier. The parents
will no longer struggles to brace what are the needed amount and
requirement meant to address by their children in completing school requisites
and demand. In this manner, they are determining the financial status of the
students and how it is affected on the academic performance.

Planning is essential when financial support is limited. This could be a

breakthrough if we can accurately plot how the financial status affect the
academic performance of the students (Dumaran, Heramil, and Zamora
2015).

Financial status is a situation where money can cause individual stress.

Many people are facing hard financial times and impact on health, academic
performance or motivation can be significant. This include worrying a lot or
feeling anxious over money, arguing with family, headaches, feeling unwell,
difficulty in sleeping and even grades in school (Lifeline Australia 2016).
Education is a coastal service therefore insufficient financial support will be a
problem for students to enhance their selves in academics thus leading to a
poor academic performance. Financial status must be handled because they
lead to a slew of other challenges, including health troubles and poor
academic performances (Bulus and Dang 2015).

Contextual factors that influence academic performance includes family

background, school quality, teacher quality, and the learning environment.
Family background, including socio-economic statues and parental education
has been shown a significant impact on academic performance. Children from
low-income families tend to have lower of academic achievement than
children from higher-income families (Reardon et al.,2016). Thomas
Richardson (2013) cited that there is a strong relationship between financial
status and academic performance. When a college student is having ongoing
financial issues, it will affect’s personal life such as sleep problems wherein
they were terrified to their financial status, it affects college students’ health
such as anxiety and stress in facing their academic performance.

The present study focuses on the impacts of financial status to BEED-3

students of Salawagan national highschool who are enrolled in the school
year 2022-2023. This study aims to investigate the relationship between the
effects on the financial problem of students’ academic performances to
identify the effects to its financial problem. This study aims to contribute to the
field of education and provide practical insights for educators. This thesis is
organized into several chapters that provides detailed background of the
study, review of literature, describe the research methodology and results.
Also, offers a discussion and interpretation of the findings. The study
concludes with recommendations for future researchers and implications for
practices.
