What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
understand the personal protective equipment in installing wireways and cable
trays. The coverage of this module permits it to be used in many different learning
situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of learners.
The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the subject. But the
order in which you read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you
are now using.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. identify the personal protective equipment in installing wireways and

cable trays;
2. select personal protective equipment needed for the installation of
wireways and cable trays in line with job requirements; and,
3. develop traits such as in achieving the knowledge regarding the
personal protective equipment on wireways and cable trays installation.

What’s New

The minimum Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirement always

applies when performing electrical work, even when it has been placed in an
Electrically Safe Work Condition. The minimum PPE will not fully protect the worker
but can significantly reduce the likelihood of a life-altering injury.

Direction: Look at the picture and label the PPE items. Write your answer on your
answer sheet.

6
What Is It

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) are
gadgets to protect workers from injury or illness
caused by having contact with the
dangers/hazards in the workplace whether they
are chemical, biological, radiation, physical,
electrical, mechanical and others.
OSHA recommends controlling the hazard
at its source as the ideal way to protect workers
against hazards. Engineering or workplace
practice controls should be used on the basis of
the hazard present at a workplace. However, when
work practice, engineering, and administrative
controls do not offer sufficient protection,
employers must provide workers with personal
protective equipment (PPE) and make sure
workers use them.

7
Although employers are, in general, responsible for maintaining PPE, including
replacing worn or damaged PPE, employees should care for, clean, and maintain
PPE, and inform a supervisor of the need to repair or replace PPE.
These are the common Personal Protective Equipment gadgets:

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE PICTURES

EQUIPMENT
Gloves - are personal protective
equipment worn during work projects
that cover and protect the hands from
the wrist to the fingers.

Potential hazards for hands

– Skin absorption of hazardous
substances
– Lacerations or severe cuts
– Punctures
– Chemical burns
– Thermal burns
– Extreme temperatures
Hard Hats/ Helmets – is a steel or
plastic helmet worn to protect one's
head from falling objects or debris

Frequent causes of head injuries

-Falling objects from above striking on
the head;
– Bump head against fixed objects,
such as exposed pipes or beams; or
– Accidental head contact with electrical
hazards.
Work boots - is personal protective
equipment (PPE) for foot protection at
workplaces.

Causes of foot injuries:

– Falling or rolling of heavy objects
– Crushing or penetrating materials
– Sharp objects that can penetrate the
sole
– Exposure to molten metal
– Working on, or around, hot, wet, or
slippery surfaces
– Working when electrical hazards are
present.

Safety footwear should be checked for

wear and tear, holes, cracks, broken
laces or buckles, and more. Employees

8
should clean and maintain their safety
footwear according to the
manufacturer’s recommendations.

Protective Clothing - provide

protective clothing for those parts of the
body exposed to possible injuries

Types of body protection

– Laboratory coats
– Coveralls
– Vests
– Jackets
– Aprons
– Surgical gowns
– Full-body suits
Goggles - protect eyes, and the facial
area immediately surrounding the eyes
from impact, dust, splashes.

Common causes of eye injuries

– Chemical splashes
– Blood or OPIM splashes or sprays
– Intense light
– Dust and other flying particles
– Molten metal splashes Types of PPE

Respiratory protection - is a particular

type of Personal Protective Equipment
(PPE), used to protect the individual
wearer against the inhalation of
hazardous substances in the workplace
air.

Hearing Protection - is required to

prevent noise induced hearing loss.
Hearing protection devices reduce the
noise energy reaching and causing
damage to the inner ear. Earmuffs and
earplugs are the most common types of
PPE.

-Exposure to noise levels over 85 dB

can cause hearing loss
-Hearing protection required at 90 dB

REMEMBER

1. Personal protective equipment should be taken cared as of the other tools

and equipment. Wipe your helmets, gloves, safety shoes before keeping it.
2. It should also be cleaned, kept in proper tool rack/ cabinet.
3. It should be stored in dry places so that it will not have mold build-up.
4. Over-all suites should be washed regularly so that perspirations and other dirt
will be washed clean.
