ABSTRACTION
Safety measures are applying based on work requirement and farm
procedures. Outfit is worn in accordance with farm requirements. Personal protective
equipment (PPE) is an equipment to be worn by worker against safety risk at work.

Wearing outfits to farm requirements helps reduces number of injuries and

illnesses such as the following.

Protect your head with a hard hat when performing

construction work, trimming trees, repairing
machinery and doing other jobs with head injury
risks.

Protect your vision with appropriate safety eyewear

(safety glasses, goggles, face-shields) when
applying pesticides, fertilizers, working in the shop)

Protect your hearing with acoustic earmuffs or

plugs when operating noisy equipment such as
grain dryers, feed grinders, older tractors, chain
saws, etc.

Protect your lungs with the correct respiratory

equipment dust masks, cartridge respirators,
gas masks, air packs) when working in dusty or
moldy conditions, spray painting, applying
chemicals, working in bins, tanks, silos, and manure
storage

10
Used gloves to keep the hands warm as well as to
protect them from excessive abrasion heat, liquids
or chemicals.

Are the most versatile and all-around item of

clothing for agricultural works. Coverall protect
the arms, body and legs.

Working boots are recommended when working

in the farm. This is protection of the feet against
wild and harmful animals.

STANDARD POLICIES AND PRACTICES

SHELF LIFE / AGE CONTROL ITEMS POLICY

Shelf life is defined in several ways, by the different labels that are attached to
foods like” use by”, “best by”. Generally, the word “best” refers to the time a prepared
food item will remain fresh, remain healthy to eat, and keep its freshest taste. Eating
foods with expired shelf lives is definitely not good and recommended, since it can be
an indication that food will go bad after a certain time.

Quality personnel are responsible for the maintenance of this procedure to

ensure that all steps are adequate and clearly defined in accordance with current
practices and established requirements.

APPROVAL REQUIREMENTS: Quality Systems Management shall approve all

revisions to this Standard Operating Practices.

1. Shelf life-controlled material is a bonding, solder, potting compound, epoxy,

adhesive, catalyst, lubricant, paint or ink subject to age. Shelf life control and
recommended storage instructions are determined by manufacturer information.

11
2. Non-shelf life control material is any production material that does not have a
manufacturer suggested expiration date. Examples are alcohol, soap, water, glass
cleaner, solvent, petrolatum grease, hydraulic oil, light oil, etc.

3. Age controlled elastomer item is any part, sub or final assembly containing a part or
material subject to deterioration due to storage environment or age.

4. Non-age-controlled elastomer item is any part, sub or final assembly containing

a part or material that does not deteriorate due to storage environment or age.

5. Temperature controlled material is any temperature, sensitive production material.

This material must be stored within the temperature range specified
by the manufacturer. Recommended packaging, storage and expiration date of age-
controlled in accordance with ARP 5316. A minimum of 75% shelf life remaining on
age-controlled items to be delivered to EIC.

6. Purchase orders are placed with instructions to suppliers of shelf life/age control
items to provide the following information, as applicable: • Part Number and Revision
Letter Manufacturers’ Part Number Manufacturers’ Name and/or Identity Number
Rubber Class Designation Date of Manufacture Cure Date Expiration Date (If the shelf
life/age control item is not controlled, provide that information also.)

7. Attach completed shelf life label firmly on each container.

10. Cover each shelf life label completely with clear plastic tape, if applicable.

8. Shelf life material that has a temperature control requirement or notes a maximum
storage temperature must be identified with a label. Verify shelf life label or stock ticket
contains all information.

9. Transfer expiration date information onto Stockroom label before stocking items.

Farm Emergency Procedures Regarding Safety Working

Environment

Emergency procedures are known to ensure a safe work requirement. Safety

working environment are generally a method of outlining some way on how to do the
task with minimum risk to people, equipment, materials, environment, and processes.
Safe job procedures are a series of specific steps that guide a worker through a task
from start to complete in an exceedingly chronological order.

12
1. Identify the potential emergencies.
The emergencies that may occur on a crop production farm could include:
a. fire f. snake or spider bite
b. flood g. chemical exposure
c. typhoon h. injuries
d. machinery entrapment I. illness and
e. electrical shock j. accidents

2. Provide emergency facilities appropriate for the sorts of emergencies that might
occur on the farm (e.g. deluge showers, eye washes, firefighting equipment, first
aid kits).
3. Make sure that the correct equipment is available to contain and handle any
chemical or other dangerous materials spills that might happen.
4. To help minimize the risk of personal injury or property damage in the event of an
emergency, people working on and visiting the farm need to know and understand
the emergency procedures and their responsibilities.
5. Instruct everyone working on the farm in the emergency response procedures.
6. Everyone should know the location of fire alarms, fire extinguishers and first aid kits;
how and where to contact emergency services; and where to safely assemble in
the event of an emergency.

The following factors may increase risk of injury or illness for farm workers:

1. Age – Injury rates are highest among children

age 15 and under and adults over 65.

2. Equipment and Machinery – Most farm

accidents and fatalities involve machinery.
Proper machine guarding and doing equipment
maintenance according to manufacturers ‘can
help prevent accident.

Location of First Aid Kit

OHSA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) will ensure safety and
healthful working conditions to all workers by setting and enforcing standards and by
providing training. Require a workplace to have a first aid kit readily, available and to
have someone who is first aid trained if emergency medical services

13
EVACUATION
If evacuation is necessary in any type of emergency, the key is that you and
your family respond quickly and responsibly.

Waste Materials
Waste materials should be disposed according to manufacture, government
and farm requirements.

Here are some safety reminders:

a. Animal manure
Farmers used animal manure as mandatory and essential agent
for soil conditioning and plant fertilizers. Farmers should find/make exact
place to dispose on it.
b. Waste Water
Waste water include water that is discharged from households,
office and retail buildings, and manufacturing plants and is no longer
considered fit for human consumption. Wastewater recycling is one of the
sensible and winning options for promoting water sufficiency and it can
range from simple methods to sophisticated industrial wastewater filtration
system.
c. Unused Farm chemicals
Pesticides
Store them safely and dispose them as soon as you can. After
emptying a pesticide container, rinse it properly for disposal or
recycling. Never reuse the container for any purpose.
Chemicals
Do not put chemicals back into reagent bottles, returning an
unused chemical to a container risk contamination. Extra material must
be placed appropriate chemical waste container. Whenever possible,
share excess with a neighbor but do not return it to the original
container.

14
Fertilizer
Is any material of natural or synthetic origin that is applied to soil
or to plant to supply one or more plant nutrients essential to the
growth plants, take your unused fertilizer in its original container with
label to a garden outlet.
d. Expired reagents
Can expired reagents be used? Expired chemicals in their original
containers are also accepted for disposal provided they are sealed, in
good condition and properly identified. Do not combine chemical bottles
with another chemicals waste container.

e. Dead animals
Do not touch the animal. Use a long-handled shovel to pick up the
dead animal and place it into a plastic bag. Put on gloves before handling
the plastic bag. Tie a knot in the top of the bag. Place the bag with the
animal into a second bag.

HAZARD, RISK AND EXPOSURE IN THE FARM
Agricultural workers have a high risk of occupational injuries, illnesses, and
fatalities. However, there are very few standardized tools to assess safety and health
in agricultural operations.

CHEMICAL HAZARDS
Includes chemical substances such as acids or poisons and those that could
lead to fire or explosion, like pesticides, herbicides, cleaning agents, dusts and
fumes from various processes such as welding.

Here are some preventive measures when you encounter a hazardous

chemical
a. Ensure their workplace has an up to date safety data sheet to every
hazardous chemical and that it can be readily accessed by workers.
b. Monitor health of workers who use hazardous chemicals. This includes
workers exposed to lead and asbestos

ELECTRICAL HAZARDS
Includes electricity, machinery, equipment, pressure vessels, dangerous
goods, fork lifts, cranes, hoists.
Preventive Steps and Safe Work

a. Inspect wiring of equipment before each use.

b. Use safe work practices every time electrical equipment is used.
c. Know the location and how to operate shut-off switches and or circuit breaker
panels.
d. Limit use of extension cords.
e. Multi-plug adapters must have circuit breakers or fuses.

FALLS

Several personal risk factors to falling, include muscle weaknesses, problems

with balance and gait, blood pressure that dropped too much when you get up from
lying down or sitting. Many of these slips, trips, and falls lead to serious injuries with
one in four resulting in an absence of over one month

Here are some guidelines to help you create a safer working environment
avoiding slips, trips, and falls.

a. Wear proper footwear

b. Don’t work in the dark. Make sure adequate lighting is available when you
are working.
c. Use the right tool for the job.
d. Clean spills before they come slipping hazards.
