Velocity Radar Systems

1 INTRODUCTION
The network ready SL-xxxPE family of fixed head Weibel Doppler Radar Systems are highly
portable and based on state-of-the-art radar technologies. Transmitting and receiving
antennas are planar arrays and all electronic components are integrated in the Antenna /
Processor unit.

The new SL-xxxPE family of Doppler Radars can connect directly to your TCP/IP network -
and can be accessed and controlled/monitored from any standard PC on the network –
running the WinDopp software.

This new unique feature enables some new configurations:

• Easy access to remote un-manned radars through a standard interface

• A super user/supervisor can easily assist radar operators in the field.
• Remote assistance over the local network.
• Multiple radars and WinDopp PCs networked together for maximum flexibility.
• The internal sample memory ensures safe operation on networks with low
bandwidth.

The fixed head Doppler Radar Systems are based on the renowned SL-520M/W-700 family
and are designed to operate under field conditions. The SL-xxxP family incorporates the W-
700 signal analyser functionality into the antenna and a standard PC. The rugged
mechanical system design combined with a robust electronic design ensures high reliability
and resistance to blast and vibrations from the weapons firing.

The new series of SL-xxxPE Velocity Radar systems, incorporates and benefits from the
latest improvement on oscillator and antenna designs, developed for the advanced
Tracking radars also offered from Weibel.

These radar systems operate on the Doppler principle. The radar antenna transmits a
microwave Continuous Wave (CW) signal, receives the echoed signal from the target, and
subtracts the transmitted signal from the received signal generating the Doppler signal. The
Doppler signal is amplified and digitized in the built-in processor.

The digitized Doppler signal are stored in the digital memory. The velocity is calculated
using Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT) and digital signal processing. The use of FFT-based
calculation enables the system to measure on all types of ammunition and calibres
including:

Velocity Radar Systems

• Bullets
• Artillery
• Mortars
• Tracers
• Base bleed ammunition
• Anti-tank rounds
• APFSDS
• Rockets

The system is designed to measure velocities from 30 to 10000 m/s with an over-all system
accuracy typically better than +/- 0.05%. The system can store over 1000 muzzle velocity
results in non-volatile memory.

The Weibel Doppler radar systems incorporate a unique self-calibrating technology as an

option. With this option, the system does not need any calibration during its entire life cycle,
calibrating itself with the speed of light as a reference.

Calculated maximum tracking range under ideal conditions and not considering external losses due to muzzle
flare or similar phenomenon. Range interval is affected by aspect angle to projectile and projectile size and
shaping that may reduce or improve the reflected radar signal. Maximum range in the interval is assuming flat
projectile base observed from the back with the radar placed close to barrel making the aspect angle close to 0
degrees.

Velocity Radar Systems

Antenna: Planar antenna array based Doppler radar antenna including:

• All microwave components including front end narrow band filter.

The narrow band microwave filter reduces risk of the receiver
being saturated by other radars such as high-power pulse radars.
The SL-xxxP also includes front end Low Noise Amplifier, I/Q mixer
and I/Q low noise base band amplifier.

• Built-in acoustic trigger (SL-520PE option only)

• Trigger system

• The hardware and software is based on the renowned W-700

Doppler radar analyser which has been used worldwide for tests on
proving grounds and in private companies. All processing
algorithms are inherited from the W-700.

• The Doppler signal is digitized and temporarily stored in the internal

sample memory during the measurement. The digitized signal is
transferred to the IC–700 computer after the measurement for
further analysis and permanent storage. This reduces the required
bandwidth on the Ethernet connection to the antenna and secures
against loss of data due to network limitations.

The SL-xxxPE software is programmed into non-volatile memory, but the

software can be updated via the external interface from the Host-PC
without opening the SL-xxxPE system box.

PS-200PE: Power Supply running on 110/220VAC and capable of delivering the

necessary power for the radar systems with less than 4W transmission
power and functioning as the communication link between radar and IC-
700.

PS-800: Additional Power Supply running on 110/220VAC which delivers the

necessary power for the radar systems with more than 2W transmission
power. Depending on configuration it will be used together with the PS-
200PE for communication with the radar or the communication runs
directly from Radar to IC-700.

SeCa: Self-calibration, the SL-xxxPE system incorporates a unique self-

calibration technology and calibrates the measured velocity with the
speed of light as reference. With this optional feature the system does not
need regular calibration throughout its entire lifetime.

GPS: Integrated GPS timing module (Optional), with the new GPS timing module
integrated in the antenna, all data will automatically be time stamped to
the UTC time, derived from the GPS module.

FOT-2: Muzzle flash detector starts the storing of the Doppler signal in the SL-
xxxPE Radar System. The FOT-2 is optional.

ST-700: System tester used for function verification of the radar system prior to
trials by simulating a Doppler frequency when placed in front of the radar.

CAB-137: Power & communication cable between the SL-xxxPE and the IC-700, 76
meters (Typical).

CAB-101: Trigger cable, 20 meters (Typical).

IC-700: Windows compatible computer controlling the Doppler Antenna using the
Weibel control & analysis program - WinDopp.

WinDopp: Windows based Control & Analysis Software

Because of the structured hardware design and modular software, the system is designed
for future modifications and upgrades.
